Don’t stop whatting? Yesterday we were thankful and spent time giving thanks. When you reflect on life, what is it that you think you won’t ever stop doing? If you were to give someone advice, what would you stay “Don’t Stop _____”? Do you have a must have or must do list of things that you should never stop doing? Is there anything you would put at the top of your list?
Let’s consider a few options that came top of mind for me.
Don’t stop loving:
- “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:9-10).
- “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).
- “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14).
- “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7).
- “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Don’t stop believing:
- “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
- “Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes”” (Mark 9:23).
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
- “But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).
- “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith” (1 John 5:4).
Don’t stop praying:
- “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
- “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (Ephesians 6:18).
- “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2).
- “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
- “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).
Don’t stop rejoicing:
- “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
- “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).
- “Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!” (Psalm 32:11).
- “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds” (James 1:2).
- “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:12).
Don’t stop giving thanks:
- “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
- “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20).
- “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds” (Psalm 9:1).
- “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 107:1).
- “Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light” (Colossians 1:12).
Don’t stop being steadfast:
- “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
- “May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thessalonians 3:5).
- “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13).
- “For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end” (Hebrews 3:14).
- “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Don’t stop obeying God:
- “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).
- “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
- “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it” (2 John 1:6).
- “Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4).
- “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3).

My Notes:
Consider what the book of 1 Thessalonians is about:
Yes, there are several summaries of the book of 1 Thessalonians available online. According to Bible Hub, the book of 1 Thessalonians is a Pauline Epistle (letter from Paul) written about 52-54 A.D. and it was one of his earliest written letters. The key personalities in this book are the Apostle Paul, Timothy, and Silas. Paul wrote this letter to strengthen and encourage the church in Thessalonica. To encourage and hearten the believers, Paul chose to emphasize the second coming of Jesus Christ. Throughout this letter, Paul focused on the principles of Faith, Hope, and Love. In chapters 1-3, the first principle is seen as Paul accentuates and commends them for their faithfulness to the Lord. In chapters 4-6, Paul highlights Love and Hope. He encourages the church to walk in love; to (excel still more). He then expounds on the return of Jesus and “the day of the Lord”. Paul teaches the church about the resurrection on the last day and that Christ will return in the clouds, this was exactly the encouragement that the church in Thessalonica needed. Lastly, before Paul finishes his letter he does not forget to add that they must pray constantly and “examine everything carefully’. In today’s world of lies, deception and carnival mirrors, everyone must apply these truths daily. Summaries Courtesy of the Ultimate Bible Summary Collection Bible Summary Bible Hub.

Devotional: A Life of Constant Prayer Written by Lindsay Dryer
Key Verse: ‘Never stop praying. ‘ 1 Thessalonians 5:17
- Ever caught yourself thinking that you didn’t get much done because you were continually doing chores?
- Do you realize what might be possible within the 24hrs you have in a day and thought “it’s pretty much impossible to do something constantly except for maybe one thing: prayer“?
- Today’s reading points us “In his letter to the church of Thessalonica, Paul commands the people to pray constantly.“
- Let’s leave prayer journals nearby so that we can write down when prayer needs come up.
- We need to grab a hold of the reality and importance and “power of an uninterrupted connection with God”.
- I remember a neighbor commenting that I had like a bat phone to God and I shared we all do, as today’s devotional puts it “The amazing truth is, we have a direct line to God, and we’re invited to approach Him with confidence.“
- Today’s devotional points us to some scriptures to help us grab a hold of this truth and reality when it comes to times of need:
- “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
- ‘Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. ‘ (James 5:16).
- How often do you have a time of need? What type of needs do you have?
- Today’s devotional shares the following: “Time of need? That’s definitely a constant for me. In some moments, I need strength. In others, I need comfort. Throughout the day I need God to remind me of His grace so that I can extend it to others. There’s not a minute that passes I don’t need the presence of God. “
- How do you respond to Paul’s “command to pray continually“
- Today’s devotional closes with the following question and challenge:
- “So how do you live a life of constant prayer? Remember that your Heavenly Father longs to hear from you and bends down to listen (Psalm 116:2). In everything, big and small, submit it to God. Talk to Him, out loud or in your thoughts — He hears both. Keep a prayer journal on your kitchen counter as a reminder to lift your needs and others’ needs to God throughout the day. When a child or friend comes to you with a burden, stop and pray. “
- “What a gift to know that we are just a breath away from communing with our Creator!“
