Happy New Year’s Eve

It’s the day before a year that will be filled with lots of change. It’s the day before a year when one daughter who has been raised up in the way she should go will be leaving home to pursue God’s purpose, passion, and plan for her life. It’s the day before a year when another daughter will be heading off to college and getting to play collegiate soccer after graduating her senior year. It’s the day before a year when the house will only have one child left and our son will get the experience of being a teen and only child type of experience. So needless to say there will be a lot of changes in how our house is going to be and feel. God help us enjoy every day we have with our kids. God help us to focus on what is important to you as we prepare for and go through these changes throughout the year. God help us to live our lives in ways that will point our kids towards you and will bring you the praise, the honor, and the glory. Lord, help me I pray to Be The Dad you created me to be for Your purpose, Your plan, Your honor, and Your glory. Seasons are changing and we need to be ready. Seasons are changing and we need to get prepared. Seasons are changing as we move from a home of 5 to 4 and after a few months 3 and after a few years down to 2. Seasons change! So let’s enjoy the one we are in and prepare for the one that is coming so that we can make the most of it for the glory of God!

THE ONE YEAR DAILY INSIGHTS
WITH ZIG ZIGLAR AND DR. IKE REIGHARD
FOR DECEMBER 31ST

SPRINGTIME FOR THE SOUL

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘For lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove Is heard in our land.’

Song of Solomon 2:11-12

Let’s look for additional context and details by expanding the verses and using the Amplified version:

‘“I am the rose [of the plain] of Sharon, The lily of the valleys [that grows in deep places].” “Like the lily among the thorns, So are you, my darling, among the maidens.” “Like an apple tree [rare and welcome] among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the young men! In his shade I took great delight and sat down, And his fruit was sweet and delicious to my palate. He has brought me to his banqueting place, And his banner over me is love [waving overhead to protect and comfort me]. Sustain me with raisin cakes, Refresh me with apples, Because I am sick with love. Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me.” “I command that you take an oath, O daughters of Jerusalem, By the gazelles or by the does of the field [which run free], That you do not rouse nor awaken my love Until she pleases.” “Listen! My beloved! Behold, he comes, Climbing on the mountains, Leaping and running on the hills! My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he is standing behind our wall, He is looking through the windows, He is gazing through the lattice. “My beloved speaks and says to me, ‘Arise, my love, my fair one, And come away. For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth once again; The time for singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree has budded and ripens her figs, And the vines are in blossom and give forth their fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, And come away [to climb the rocky steps of the hillside].’ ” “O my dove, [here] in the clefts in the rock, In the sheltered and secret place of the steep pathway, Let me see your face, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your face is lovely.” “Catch the foxes for us, The little foxes that spoil and ruin the vineyards [of love], While our vineyards are in blossom.” “My beloved is mine and I am his; He pastures his flock among the lilies. Until the cool of the day when the shadows flee away, Return quickly, my beloved, and be like a gazelle Or a young stag on the mountains of Bether [which separate us].”’

Song of Solomon 2:1-17

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever noticed how our relationships go through seasons?
  • Ever noticed it in your romantic relationships?
  • Ever noticed it in your relationship with God?
  • When you think of seasons have you ever felt like your relationship is going through Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall?
  • When you went through the season of winter, did you make the conscious decision to press through and keep going even though it seemed like there was very little warmth?
  • Ever considered how the season of Winter when we compare what happens in nature to the plants speaks to the state of our hearts? A season of barrenness.
  • We need to not lose hope because seasons don’t last forever!
  • We need to hold onto the reality that when this cold season passes it will be heading into Spring.
  • Are you looking for signs of spring? Are you looking for the warmth to return? Are you ready for your heart to be filled with hope?
  • Ever watched mature marriages and compared them to a relationship with God?
  • Marriages start with the heat of passion and idealism of pure love.
  • Ever noticed how when the honeymoon ended how reality hit the husband and wife hard?
  • Ever witnessed the reassessment that needed to happen and go through?
  • Ever witnessed how they took on this necessary challenge?
  • Ever seen how they had to rebuild their relationship based on reality?
  • Ever seen how they built their relationship on realistic expectations and good communication?
  • Ever seen it not work out and the marriage turn into an empty shell?
  • In the midst of the winter season, opportunities to have richer conversations appear.
  • In the midst of the winter season, opportunities to have deeper affection appear.
  • In the midst of the winter season, opportunities to have a marriage that flourishes like never before.
  • So don’t lose hope! Lean in and work to make things better! Be on the lookout for signs of Spring and what needs to happen to be ready.
  • Ever had a similar experience when you started your relationship with God?
  • Did you start the relationship with great joy and high hopes?
  • Did you get incredible experiences with God that built up your faith?
  • Did you eventually get to the point of needing to grow in your faith and find yourself in the point of a change of experience facing trials, troubles, and more difficult situations?
  • We you able to grow and mature through these times like James 1:2-4 speaks of and be able to consider them pure joy?
    • ‘Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing. ‘
      James 1:2-4
  • Did you find that the more challenging paths caused you to struggle?
  • Did you find that the more challenging paths caused you to find disappointments?
  • Did you find that the more challenging paths caused you to have misunderstandings?
  • Did it challenge your young faith but by pressing in and pressing on found you built a more mature and strengthen faith?
  • Did you find it helped you draw closer to God?
  • Did you find it helped you build a deeper relationship with God?
  • Are you facing a Winter season today? Don’t lose hope! Remember that Winter’s season of dormancy is required in preparation for Spring.
  • Be it in nature when we see Winter come before Spring.
  • Be it in romantic relationships when we see Winter come before Spring.
  • Be it in our walk with God when we see Winter come before Spring.
  • If we develop greater trust when it is cold and dark, we’ll get to experience more love in the warmth of Spring.

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • How have you observed seasons in relationships wtih people and God?
  • In both kinds of relationships, what are some things we can do in winter to prepare for spring?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.”

― William Jennings Bryan

So are you ready to live your life on purpose? Are you ready to live your life with purpose? Are you ready to live your life for a purpose? God created each of us on purpose, with purpose, and for a purpose. So we need to choose to receive it and then start to live it in order to achieve it. Let’s invite God into our lives and ask Him to help lead and guide our thoughts, words, and actions so that we can live out our lives for His glory in Jesus’s name. Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.
and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of
Heaven. Father, I believe that Jesus rose
from the dead and I ask you right now to
come in to my life and be my personal
Lord and Savior. I repent of my Sins and
will Worship you all the day's of my Life!
Because your word is truth, I confess with
my mouth that I am Born Again and
Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus
Name, Amen

As I was considering these a song came to mind and so sharing it here to close today’s post: https://youtu.be/QvHE65nImmM

Time is precious: With 24hrs/day and 365(6) days a year and a limited number of years in a life time…

How are you choosing to spend your time? Are you cautious with your time? Are you careful with your time? Are you guarded with your time? Are you watchful of your time? Are you alert of how fast time is going? Are you attentive to your time? With but a short number of hours in a day, how do you choose to use them? How do you choose to prioritize what you will spend your time on? You may have heard that time is money, showing the value of your time? You may have a job and are working for some of that time and getting paid. You may be married and should be spending time with your spouse. You may have kids and so you need to make time for them because as much as some think quality time is enough, quantity time is just as important. How do you spend your day and time with God? Are you walking through life with Him so that He is a priority and gets a lot of your time or do you schedule out some time for Him and so need to figure and balance out His time too? Rest, you need to make sure you have time for rest! Be it your evening of sleep of 6-12 hours, your body needs rest to rejuvenate and restore. So how will you spend your time?

There are similarities between time and money in that you need to be a good steward of both. There are differences between time and money too though as you can’t make more time. One is finite and limited and the other is able to be generated and produced. Both require good stewardship though. Both require prioritization too. So you need to make a plan for both your time and your money. Time may have a value comparable to money or demonstrated by the amount of money you make over time but it is limited as we only get so many trips around the sun before our time on earth is up. So we need to consider how to make the biggest impact with that time in order to glorify God by accomplishing the cause He has created us to accomplish.

How will you use your time today? this coming week? this coming month? this coming year? and those yet to come?

How will you use your time to show the value of others in your life? God? Spouse? Kids? Family? Friends? Neighbors? Coworkers? Strangers? Workers at the stores and restaurants? etc.?

What will it take for you to make the most of your time today?

The One Year Daily Insights with Zig Ziglar and Dr. Ike Reighard
for August 14th

I missed 2 days and when I went to post on the 15th, I just realized I grabbed the devotional for the 14th and so updated the date above. I am going to have to catch up on 13th and 15th at some point.

Keeping Track of Time

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.’

Ephesians 5:15-16

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Are you making the most of your time or are you wasting it?
  • Does your time have purpose or is it being wasted?
  • Are you using your time to the full or are you procrastinating?
  • Are you using your time to the full or are you putting off your chores or responsibilities?
  • Are you using your time to accomplish God’s purpose and cause for you and your life?
  • Are you using your time to accomplish something else? Are you using your time on the wrong pursuits?
  • Are you using your time to accomplish God’s purpose and cause or are you using your time to achieve selfish goals?
  • Are you using your time to accomplish your calling or are you using your time to get to the top and steamrolling over everything and anyone who gets in your way?
  • Are you using your time doing or worrying?
  • Are you using your time doing or worrying about what others are thinking?
  • Are you using your time doing or worrying about what might happen?
  • Are you using your time doing or worrying about things that were said in the past?
  • Are you using your time doing or allowing fears of what could happen to hold you back?
  • Are you using your time doing or just measuring your time by how full your calendar is?
  • Are you using your time building and strengthening relationships?
  • So will you use the time you have, in this battle of good vs evil, to accomplish God’s will rather than wasting it away?
  • Will you use your time for good in this battle through time?
  • Will you use your time to learn and know God’s will so that you can get it done for His glory?
  • How are you using your time?
  • Are you able to discern or analyze how well you are using your time?
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That doesn’t mean to use it all up so you can say you are busy!
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That does mean to accomplish God’s will in God’s timing!
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That does mean redeeming every moment we have as a gift from God!
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That does mean redeeming every moment in order to honor and glorify God!
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That does mean redeeming every moment with an eternal focus and purpose in mind!
  • Let’s use our time wisely! That does mean redeeming every moment to have a positive impact on those we love and He loves! That’s right let’s love everybody!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • Wat are the most common ways you see people wasting time?
  • How would it change your life to realize that every moment is a gift from God to be redeemed and use to honor Him?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“I find the doing of the will of God leaves me no time for disputing about His plans.”

George MacDonald

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

So where are you at today? How are you using time time? Are you using it for good or are you wasting it? Are you using it to do God’s will or your’s? Are you ready to invite God into your life to walk it out with you and help you to live it to the full like His purpose and plan for you are? Remember the plans from Jeremiah 29:11 to give us a hope and a future? Remember the plans from John 10:10 comparing the devil’s plans vs Jesus’s plans? (“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].”) So how will you choose to live your life? Will you invite Jesus in so that you can enjoy the time you have left? Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.

Do you know your purpose or cause? Is it the way you live?

None of us are accidents! We’ve all been created on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose! We all have a cause to live for and to make a difference for in this world! Are you living out your purpose and your cause? Are you seeking your purpose and your cause? Don’t lose hope if you haven’t found it yet, just know that you have been created on purpose by God, no matter what others may say, He wasn’t surprised by your entering of the world! Let’s pursue our cause with purpose for the glory of God!

Let’s check out some scripture on this subject:

‘The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked [according to their role] for the day of evil. ‘

Proverbs 16:4 (AMP)

‘For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God; not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation]. For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. ‘

Ephesians 2:8-10 (AMP)

‘When all has been heard, the end of the matter is: fear God [worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep His commandments, for this applies to every person. ‘

Ecclesiastes 12:13

‘Trust in and rely confidently on the L ord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. ‘

Proverbs 3:5-6

‘And Jesus replied to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’ ‘

Matthew 22:37-39

‘ Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], And your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance]. ‘

Proverbs 16:3

‘Commit your way to the Lord ; Trust in Him also and He will do it. ‘

Psalms 37:5

As we consider the following verses, let’s let them sink in…

Genesis 1:27 (NLT) 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Proverbs 20:5 (ESV) 5 The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Proverbs 20:5 (NIV) 5 The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 1:5 (NLT) 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Psalm 139:13 (NIV) 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb

Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT) 5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart

Proverbs 19:21 (NLT) 21 You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

A Friend of Sinners

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ ‘

Luke 7:34

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Jesus knew His purpose and His cause for coming to the earth.
  • Jesus knew His purpose wasn’t about building up a group and living comfortably.
  • Jesus knew His purpose was to keep reaching out to the outcast and the troubled, the sinners, those who needed Him and to be reconnected with God.
  • The religious folks ridiculed Him, but He knew that the sick, the “unclean”, and the the people who were living questionable lives needed a savior and needed to know and hear the truth and love of God!
  • The religious folks questions His methods and practices but He didn’t because Jesus know and never forgot the reason why He came. (check out John 3:17)
  • God’s love is unconditional! He doesn’t wait for us to get things right and all cleaned up to start loving us!
  • Remember why God sent Jesus? He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to make the way! (check out John 3:16)
  • Unlike the religious leaders who thought if people were unclean, sick, or living questionable lives that they were off-limits, those were the people that Jesus pursued because they knew they needed help and He knew He was the one who could give it to them.
  • So are you ready to be someone like Jesus who is open armed, open minded, and open hearted enough to receive and accept people who come into your life or through the doors of the church being addicts, adulterers, agnostics, and homeless?
  • How do they feel when they encounter you? at the store? in the church?
  • How do they feel when they walk through the doors of your church?
  • How do they feel when they walk through the doors of our churches?
  • Are we living more like Jesus or the religious elite?
  • Are we living more like a hospital or a country club?
  • Are we seeing them and treating them with the love and respect God desires?
  • Are we acknowledging them and loving them like God desires?
  • Are we looking down our noses at them?
  • Can we live like Jesus so that they don’t and never feel rejected?
  • Can we live like Jesus so that they feel embraced and loved?
  • Can we choose to live our lives with love so that they are touched and ready to receive God into their hearts and lives?
  • Who are the people that are outcast that you see and pass by?
  • Who are the people that need you to stop and pour into their lives?
  • Who are the people in your neighborhood? your workplace? your family?
  • Will you decide to follow Jesus’ example and be a friend to sinners?

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • Who are the “tax collectors and sinners” in your world?
  • How do they feel around you? How do you want them to feel?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“While dining with sinners, Jesus was dreaming of their becoming saints.”

Ike Reighard

Let’s get it done!

It is interesting how as my work week begins that it begins on the theme of getting the work done. As I look forward at this week there is much to do and get done at work, for camp, and at home. As I look forward at this week and consider God’s plans and purposes for this week, I turn to Him for wisdom and guidance to help me make sure I keep first things first. Be it a core team or make up training meeting tonight for camp. Be it midyear evaluations or big projects for work. Be it getting to attend a revive night on Wednesday at church. Be it getting things done around the home. Be it family time. There is always more to get done than can get done, especially if we try to do it in our own strength. So we need to cast our cares upon the Lord because He cares for us! We need to stay connected to God for His yoke is easy and His burden is light! We need to lean on God rather than our own understanding! We need to allow Him to multiply our efforts! Let’s work that we need to get it done and let’s pray like we need God’s help to get it and in conjunction we will get to see God’s hand move to help us get it done!

What is on your todo list today? What do you need to get onto your to-done list? Let’s get it done!

Finish the Work

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. ‘

John 17:4

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • There is always more need than you can handle.
  • There is always more work than you can get done.
  • There is always more help than you can give.
  • The key is to realize your purpose, why you are here, what it is God wants you to do today.
  • Don’t get fooled or weighed down by the things of the world.
  • Don’t get distracted by the noise and the clutter.
  • Focus on why God put you where you are today in order to get it done.
  • We know that when Jesus left there were still more sick people on the earth and yet as we see in today’s verse, He was finished the work the Father had given Him to do.
  • We know that when Jesus left there were still more sermons to be preached so that more people could learn about the kingdom of God and yet as we see in today’s verse, He was finished the work the Father had given Him to do.
  • We know that when Jesus left there were still more disciples to be trained so that the Word could continue to reach the farthest corners of the earth and yet as we see in today’s verse, He was finished the work the Father had given Him to do.
  • We know that when Jesus left there were still people who hadn’t heard the Good News and yet as we see in today’s verse, He was finished the work the Father had given Him to do.
  • Jesus was crystal clear on His purpose and that He had completed His task!
  • Jesus came to setup the Kingdom of God on earth, what is your purpose?
  • Jesus came to provide a direct connection from the people to God through forgiveness of sin, what is it you need to do?
  • Jesus came to leave people who could carry the message to the rest of the world, what is it you need to do?
  • Jesus knew on the night He was betrayed that the first it would be getting checked off the list as His sacrifice would pay the ultimate price so that we could have forgiveness of sin.
  • Jesus knew that the Holy Spirit would work in the lives of His followers to spread the Good News from Jerusalem, to Judea, to the outermost corners of the earth.
  • Jesus knew His mission was complete!
  • What will it take for us to be able to pray today’s memory verse when we get to the end of our day, week, month, year, and lives? To be able to confidently pray “Father, I’ve done what You wanted me to do”?
  • Let’s align our priorities with God’s in order to make this happen!
  • Let’s live out our lives, doing the good works He has prepared in advance for us to do, in a way that will bring Him the praise, the honor, and the glory in Jesus’s name.
  • Let’s keep trusting God in the midst of all the troubles and trials and difficulties that will come our way!
  • Let’s keep trusting God to lead us and use us through it all!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • How would you know if you have completed the work God gave you to do each day?
  • What would have to change in your walk with God for this to happen?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“If a commission by an earthly king is considered an honor, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?”

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

So where are you at today? Do you know what is on your todo list? Do you know what is on God’s todo list for you? Do you know who might be on your todo list from God? Do you know how to prioritize things on your todo list in order to get it to-done? Will you live your today in a way to get God’s work done? Will you prioritize God’s work today? Have you connected with Jesus in order to know what is on your list today? Have you connected with Jesus in order to get the wisdom and discernment, the energy and the strength to get it done? Are you ready to get this day started? Don’t get paralyzed by the todo list for the week or the month or the year. focus on today. Let’s ask God for wisdom on the things we need to get done in order to complete the good works He has prepared in advance for us to accomplish. Let’s not stray or keep ourselves from Jesus but rather let’s finish the work by sticking with Jesus all day long! Let’s let go of and get rid of anything that would keep us from getting it done. Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.

Because your word is truth, I confess with
my mouth that I am Born Again and
Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus

The good works have been prepared for you to do…

With the good works having been prepared in advance for you to do, will you do it? Being God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance as our way of life, will you do it? So the good works are ready for you to do it, will you be obedient to complete it? Will you take on the challenge, even if it isn’t easy, to walk out under the protection of God and complete the good good works? We aren’t to do the good works in an effort to receive our salvation but rather from the overflow of our faith is the reason why we do good works! Remember what we find in James about faith and works?

‘What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.’

James 2:14-26

So what do works look like or mean? Works are things we do, actions, our employment, our deeds, our actions or anything we do. We see good works referenced in Matthew 5 where it reads ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’Matthew 5:16 We see good works referenced in Ephesians 2 where it reads ‘For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.’Ephesians 2:10. In Matthew we find it means good deeds whereas in Ephesians we find it means well doing, virtue, or piety. We read about good works in 1 Peter 2 as well where we read ‘Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.’I Peter 2:11-12. We see how Jesus tell us that God the Father is glorified by our good works in John 15:8. We hear from Paul about good works in Titus (2:14, 3:8, 3:14) as well as in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

Remember how we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus? Remember how at the end times we will have to give account for our lives? It is our obedience to completing the good works He has prepared in advance that will be how we get judged on the works we do in love as we can see from II Corinthians 5:10, Matthew 25:34-40, and Hebrews 6:10 which say:

‘For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. ‘

II Corinthians 5:10

‘Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’’

Matthew 25:34-40

‘For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. ‘

Hebrews 6:10

So what are good works? Being obedient to God’s calling, direction, and instruction! So as we learn from Jesus all the old testament laws can be summed up by loving God and loving people as He said in Galatians 5:14 that says: ‘For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ‘. It comes down to love and from the overflow of this love we do good works! Remember how God is love? Remember how in 1 Corinthians 13 Love gets defined? So let’s be living our lives in love and as love would require of us and in so finishing the good works God has prepared in advance for us to accomplish!

‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ‘

Good Work

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘The labor of the righteous leads to life, The wages of the wicked to sin.’

Proverbs 10:16

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • What does a good fit look like when you think of the workplace?
  • What type of work fits you best?
  • Do you realize the benefits of work that is a good fit?
  • Do you realize the benefits of work that matches your skills?
  • Do you realize the benefits of work that matches your personality?
  • Do you realize the benefits of work that matches your experience?
  • Do you realize the benefits of work that matches your passions?
  • Do you realize what can happen when you find work that matches all of them?
  • Do you see your work as an opportunity to honor God?
  • Do you go into work everyday working as unto the Lord?
  • Today’s verse from Solomon reminds us how this type of work leads to life!
  • Will you allow your work to be a source of blessings?
  • Are you willing to find that right fit and then work as unto the Lord in order to honor God?
  • Will you make the decision and then allow God to work in and through you?
  • Will you make the decision and then allow God to do great things and impact the lives of many others?
  • Ever checked out TGIF devotional by Os Hillman that speaks to workplace as your ministry?
  • Ever checked out the book “The Call” by Os Guiness that speaks to our spiritual calling? It speaks to how our spiritual “Calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with special devotion, dynamism, and direction lived out as a response to his summons and service.”?
  • Do you realize that what you do at work really matters?
  • Do you realize that by working with integrity and enthusiasm because of our knowledge from God that it really matters what we do and how we do it will make it count?
  • This realization will make your work fulfilling!
  • This fulfillment will overflow into areas outside of work too! Into your family! Into your neighborhood! …
  • At the end of a day we can be energized by everything that God has done in and through us and our day rather than coming home drained or angry!
  • We can be excited by everything God did in and through your day!
  • We can be energized by the joy of the Lord that will be contagious and fill your home and family!
  • So let’s be people who treat people fairly!
  • Let’s be people who earn the respect of others!
  • Let’s live our lives on purpose, with purpose, and for God’s purpose by delighting in following Him and getting the good works He has prepared in advance for us to accomplish done.

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • How much does your work give life, and how much does it rob you of life?
  • What do you need to do to align your work with God’s purposes and presence?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Aristotle

Will you answer the call from God even if you don’t feel qualified?

As today begins and reflecting on a conversation I had yesterday about what God can do and will do if we will just answer His call. Be it the time when I was at a men’s retreat and felt God calling me to step up and get involved in my community by joining the homeowners’ association board or when in the third year He called me to step up and be president, it is interesting how responsive I was based on how qualified I felt. When the call came to join the HOA board, I felt I could do that and was quick to respond to God’s call. When the call came to step up and be president of the HOA board, I didn’t feel qualified and kept negotiating with the Spirit as that still quiet voice kept negotiating with me about it. Just thinking about the difference of perspective and how in both cases God was equally capable to use me for His purposes, my perspective was what changed how quick I was to agree and respond. Even when the interview with the board before joining gave me an out to join a committee in order to get a quarter of my dues back, I respond that I was supposed to join the board. It was interesting to consider the confidence in that first call. When some turmoil was taking place and God kept telling me to step up to be president of the board, I had more reason based on my current position in my day job/career that I could come up with so many reasons and excuses why I couldn’t or shouldn’t or wouldn’t. Until that one day when God knew the time was now or never, He had a reason, He had a purpose, and if it wasn’t going to be me, He would have to use someone else. That day at the gym when I heard the booming voice of God compared to the earlier still quiet voice of the Spirit that gave me the ultimatum “You can be president or you can be nothing, you choose!”. Wow, that got my attention and nothing sounded really bad. So I submitted to His will even with my doubts and concerns. For some reason when He called me to join the board, I trusted Him enough but when He kept prompting me to step up as president it was as if I was thinking He wasn’t enough to work in and through me to accomplish His will. Looking back, it was incredible to see Him work in and through me. Looking back, it was incredible how when I was at the end of my abilities how God showed up and instructed me, guided me, and helped me to lead not only the board but also the community into all that was ahead of us. Be it hiring an executive director (which in my day job was probably 2 or 3 levels higher in position than me). Be it finding an accounting company to help will payments and billing in support of the finance committee. Be it dealing with security concerns and the impact on the insurance costs. In each case, God was there and He helped me to make the right decisions. In each case, God was there and He provided me the confidence and the instruction and the courage to step into the situation and get it done. In each case, the outcome was confirmed to be right and produced an incredible testimony of God’s power and promises, God’s faithfulness and truth, God’s ability to call the unqualified and qualify them as He did in and through me. It was this experience that taught me that God doesn’t call the qualified but He qualifies the called!

So what about you? Will you answer the call the next time God calls you? Will you answer the call even if you don’t know or understand the purpose behind it? Will you answer the call the next time God calls, even if you don’t feel qualified? What if you you received the ultimatum of accepting the call or being nothing? What would it take for you to accept the call the next time God calls you?

Called with a Purpose

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY: Romans 8:28

‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. ‘

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Do you understand what happened?
  • Do you understand the why?
  • Do you need to understand the why?
  • Is understanding who is in control good enough?
  • Is understanding that there is a plan underway good enough?
  • Do you keep track the the experiences in life? The good? The bad? The ugly? The ones somewhere in between?
  • Do you ever consider them being weaved together into your tapestry of life?
  • Do you ever look back at what has taken place in your past and viewed it as a portrait?
  • Do you trust God to weave your life together out of love, wisdom, and strength?
  • Do you trust God to be bigger than your circumstances?
  • Do you trust God to be bigger than your problems?
  • Do you trust God when He calls you to something you don’t understand?
  • Do you trust God during the joy and the pain, the trials and troubles and the celebrations and parties?
  • Ever seen the back of something being stitched together and thought it wasn’t that nice, but when it gets flipped over it is amazingly beautify?
  • Do you trust God enough that even if it isn’t going like you thought or expected that You will trust Him?
  • Consider your life like a loom on which the weaver (God) is creating the masterpiece!
  • God’s ways are not always our ways! His ways are better and higher than our ways!
  • His ways may be different from what we hoped or imagined.
  • His ways may be different from what we dreamed or contemplated.
  • Will you answer the call and trust His handiwork?
  • Will you answer His call and direction in order to find life and peace?
  • Will you reject or resist His call and direction and find yourself angry and in despair?
  • Choose to trust God! Choose to have faith in His plans and design!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
What are some difficult things you’ve been facing?
  • 2020 and the changes and challenges
  • Change of direction that seemed to happen before I could feel settled or capable or ready
What difference would it make for you to believe that God can weave those painful experiences into the fabric of your life and create something beautiful?
  • All of 2020, I was leaning in and trusting God for that
  • All of 2020, I was living with the theme of hindsight being 2020
  • As 2020 was drawing to a close in December, and I thought things were settled (6 roles and 3 bosses) – with my math braining joking that they both divided into 12, God had 1 more change which required all the earlier part of the process/year to get me ready for such a change and disconnect me in the way required for me to be willing to take on such a calling.

QUOTES FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.”

Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“Mankind is all too often inclined to take credit for his accomplishments, but when things go wrong, he blames god.”

What can you do today? Do that to the best of your abilities!

A new day with new opportunities. Be it a last doctor’s visit. Be it connecting with the team. Be it mapping out the road ahead. Be it understanding the gifts and talents that are available. Be it understanding the desires and the goals. Be it Mapping the road ahead. It all begins with today and even though you don’t know it all and you don’t understand it all, it is a day to do what we can to the best of our abilities for and to the glory of God.

If we face a challenge then we need to take hold of the reality that God is bigger than our challenges. If we face a trial then we need to take hold of the reality that God is bigger than our trials. If we have trouble then we need to take hold of the reality that God is bigger than our troubles. God has gone in advance to prepare the good works He has for us to accomplish. God has our back. So today let’s make the most of what we are given in to the best of our abilities in order to accomplish our part of the plan. Let’s pursue God’s vision for where He has us now and where He desires for us to get and to become.

Excellence Where You Are

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY: Nehemiah 3:8

‘Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the next section; and Hananiah, one of the perfume-makers, made repairs next to that. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. ‘

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • God desires for us to do our very best in everything we do
  • God desires for us even when the job isn’t a fit to do our very best
  • God desires for us to do our very best even when we aren’t a fit for the job
  • Sometimes God just need people who are present to help
  • Sometimes God needs the ministry of presence – we are at the right place at the right time and so we need to do our best
  • God’s purpose and plan to restore may require that we are uncomfortable or unskilled for a given role but that we will still do our very best to His glory. We work as unto the Lord.
  • We need to look at the situation from God’s perspective rather than our own.
  • It isn’t about how big the situation is but rather we need to look at the situation in faith trusting that our God s bigger than this situation.
  • All things are possible with God! To God nothing is impossible!
  • How can you help bring unity to the situation?
  • Will you play the role of carrying, building, and defending as the case may be in order to see God’s plan and purpose be accomplished?
  • Will you pitch in to help where you are needed?
  • Will you pitch in without thinking that any role is above or below you and do it to the best of your abilities?
  • Will you answer God’s call rather than trying to work with people to find the right or perfect fit?
  • Will you do your part rather than waiting to find the perfect fit so that the plans and purposes of God will proceed forward?
  • Will you roll up your sleeves and get to work?
  • Will you step up to the plate and do what is asked of you without complaining?
  • Will you do your part without comparing yourself to those around you?
  • Will you do the work given to you for the glory of God?
  • Will you be a word or message of hope to the people around you who are complaining because they aren’t a perfect fit to their job?
  • Will you be filled with the Spirit of God so that if or when those around you are complaining or throwing a pity party you won’t become poisoned by the negative attitude?
  • Will you be filled with the joy of the Lord to overflowing in order prevent negativity from getting injected into the flow?
  • Let’s roll up our sleeves and do whatever it takes to get the job done!
  • Let’s work as unto the Lord so that it will build the trust of our bosses!
  • Let’s work as unto the Lord so that it will build respect of our peers!
  • Let’s work as unto the Lord, and discover that the work is and can be enjoyable!
  • I remember a few positive and encouraging quotes over the years about living differently like:
DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
What are you tempted to complain about at work?
  • In 2020 I was faced with lots of change and trying to do my best in each change and yet continued to feel like I was walking on eggshells, never being able to feel confident about the position or role I was in.
How long should you do a job that doesn’t fit you?
  • In my mind it feels like it takes about 3 months to understand the role. If you get to the end of that window and aren’t able to find a way to succeed then it may be time to discuss a change or ask for help – hopefully you will ask for help the entire time when you have questions in order to be able to continuously improve in the job.
QUOTES FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

Some people have greatness thrust upon them. Few have excellence thrust upon them. . . . They achieve it. They do not achieve it unwittingly by doing what comes naturally and they don’t stumble into it in the course of amusing themselves. All excellence involves discipline and tenacity of purpose.

Favor or Favour – however you spell it, it means a lot.

FAVOR or FAVOUR: The word has the following definition

The reason for that comes from a conversation I had fairly recently with someone when we were sharing how crazy 2020 has been and I opened up to share how I had felt like I was walking on egg shells because of everything that took place. To receive a response that said they wished they had someone who had their back like I did, I was surprised, shocked, and curious about the statement. My first thought that came to mind was thank you God for your favor on me and over my life. In the midst of the trials and the troubles God was with me and beyond my knowledge He was working on my behalf, interceding with me beyond what is due or usual. I later had a follow up conversation with someone else and their response was that it could have been worse. Wow, that was a surprise and caused me to ponder even more. I thank God that the heart of the kind is in His hands. I thank God that He has opened doors that have allowed me to go before very senior leaders over the years and blessed me with the opportunity to talk with them, some to greater depth than others and yet at least to get to meet and talk to them. As I look back and consider my time at Microsoft and that I got to meet Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Satya Nadella, it was God’s hand at work. As I look back and consider my time at GoDaddy and that I got to meet Bob Parsons, Blake Irving, Scott Wagner, and Aman Bhutani. The situations and the circumstances varied. The depth of connection varied. Some were more in passing while others I was able to build relationships with. In each case though God had given me favor. An example was before a Christmas party telling my wife how I had never met Bob and she logically commented on how short a period I had been at the company and to my surprise God heard the desire of my heart and while I was speaking with my friend Mike who walks up to talk with Mike but Bob and I got to meet him. God’s so incredible! We have not because we ask not or we ask with the wrong heart. So we need to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and then He will give us the desires of our hearts. It is important to be walking with God so that You can be walking knowing that He has your back! You will know that He will never leave you and never abandon you. You will know that He will take what the enemy means for evil and turn it around and use it for good. You will be able to trust Him in the good and the bad times rather than trying to lean on your own understanding so that You can acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight!

Twenty years ago this Christmas season we received an invitation in the mail to attend a Christmas production at a local church. We were still relatively new to the area and so we decide to go. It was the beginning of our journey of faith, our beginning of the reality of having a living relationship with God, our beginning of our journey of Jesus being our Lord and Savior, our beginning of our journey into all that God had prepared in advance for us and has since called us to be and do. It was the beginning and God had a plan to accelerate things with our late start with activities with things like that first Christmas, spiritual emphasis week, prayer and fasting week, men’s and women’s retreats, Easter and Christmas productions, Cleansing Stream, Wednesday night Bible studies and so much more. It was the beginning of an incredible relationship with our Heavenly Father. It was the beginning of an intimate relationship with Jesus. It was the beginning of our ability to be lead and guided, to find comfort and peace in the midst of the storms thanks to the comforter, the Holy Spirit.

God had a plan that was so much bigger than anything we could have asked or imagined. God saw how we honored our parents in even making the big decision to pick up and move far away after having given both sets the options of leaving Microsoft or leaving the country. God had a plan that required putting us in a place where the excuse of “we’re too busy” would be thrown out the window. We didn’t know anybody. We didn’t have much to do yet. We had no excuses 20 years ago when we made the big move. As I reflect on the decision to ask the two sets of parents, I remember the morning when God revealed to me how that was a step and a key to moving forward as it aligns to His will where we read Ephesians 6 where it says:

‘ Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother–this is the first commandment with a promise–[Exod. 20:12.] That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.’

Ephesians 6:2-3

‘ Regard (treat with honor, due obedience, and courtesy) your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.’

— Exodus 20:12

Does that mean you won’t have trials? Nope. Does that mean you won’t have troubles? Nope. Does it mean you will have God with you in and through each of those storms of life? Yes!

‘ Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations. Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.’

— James 1:2-4

‘ I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]’

— John 16:33

So are you needing someone to have your back? Why not turn to God and invite Jesus into your heart? God will go before you, preparing in advance the good works He has for you to accomplish and making a way when there doesn’t seem to be a way. God will have your back, never leaving you nor abandoning you. If it interests you, feel free to jump to the prayer at the end of the post and pray it with me. If not yet, hope you will continue reading today’s message of hope and love.

Today’s Verse of the Day:

‘ Glory to God in the highest [heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor].’

— Luke 2:14

✨MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU✨

The Weary World Rejoices: Bearing Witness To The Truth Of Christ In A Pluralistic, Globalized World

Truth, even the mere notion thereof, is constantly under attack in today’s world. Yet Christ claims to be ‘the truth , the way, and the life’, an exclusive statement that asserts that Christ alone is the way for humanity to be reconciled to God. As Christ’s disciples, we are called to be people of truth—both in word and deed—bearing witness to our glorious Saviour.

— Bearing Witness To The Truth Of Christ In A Pluralistic, Globalized World

So today’s focus as we read from God’s Word (Day 2):

  • Read:
  • Truth and the Workplace
  • Our work is significant and belongs under the Lordship of Christ
  • Reject the idea of a secular divide and instead let’s allow our work to be our ministry, our ministry field, where we are the missionaries sent into the workplace to make God known
  • Don’t downplay but instead accept and affirm your ministry in the workplace as God’s calling on your life
  • Work with your pastors and churches to help equip the saints for works of service in every part of our lives

My Notes:

  • ‘ Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,’ — Colossians 3:23
  • ‘ So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. [Col. 3:9, 10; James 3:8, 9.] And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth.’ — Genesis 1:27-28
  • Work is a part of God’s purpose and is evident in creation
  • Our work is within the sphere of ministry as we serve others
  • Do fall for the lies and deception that there is a divide
  • We are do live out our lives as living sacrifices – and work as unto the Lord!
  • We are to work with all of our hearts in whatever we do as unto the Lord for it is our worship to Him!
  • So be equipped, get equipped, develop yourself so that as you go out into the world that You can be salt and light and be Jesus with skin on to the world around you, sharking hope, light, and love with everyone.
  • Let’s be outreaching, embracing, and discipling
  • Paul ministered in the workplace as a tentmaker and so can we.

Where are you at today? Are you feeling weary? Are you looking for support and encouragement? Are you wanting to get your journey with God started? Let’s pray together.

In Jesus
Name, Amen

Wondering about your purpose in the workplace? It centers around relationships!

Take a look around you today! Where have you been place? What area have you been placed in? What office space? What company? What group? What region? And do you realize why? Do you see all the people that have been place around you? Relationships are the key! How can you speak into someone’s life if you don’t know anything about their life? And how can we find purpose in our lives? We need to build up relationship with God! We can’t pour out what we haven’t been filled with. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to fill us up so that we can then pour out into the lives around us! So ask God to fill you! Allow His anointing to fill you up to overflowing! Overflow God’s love, grace, peace, and mercy into the lives of those around you today!

Before we start, let’s stop and take a moment to listen to a prayer…What is your unique gift? How can your gifts be used today to touch others? How can God use you to touch the lives of those around you?

Will you be in the office today? How will you allow God to use you?

Will you be travelling today? How will you allow God to use you?

Wherever you will be today, prepare this morning and ask God to help you to use your unique giftings to speak into the world around you in Jesus’ name.!

Today’s reading starts in 1 Samuel 3 when Samuel first hears from God and learns to listen to His voice…

7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

Take time to listen to His voice. Take time to be in His Word! Take time to build up your relationship with Him! Take time to hear from God! Take time to be obedient to His calling and His plan!

God’s reading today continues in Ephesians 1:9

7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

God wants us to know His plan, His will, His purpose for our lives! He wants this world to understand what love is! We only know what love is because of the incredible sacrifice God made through Jesus that we could be reconciled back to Him! We know what love is because God provides us His Word that tells us that love is…

4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8Love never ends.
Let today be the beginning of a great work in your life and in your workplace by the leading and the prompting of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name I ask. Amen.
