THRIVE: Pressing in and Pressing forward to accomplish what is most important!

So with tomorrow being Friday how are you going to live out your today? Are you over the hump of Wednesday and coasting? Are you flying because Wednesday was a ramp and you are pressing in and pressing forward towards the goal for the glory of God? Are you focused? Are you prioritizing things so that what is most important is getting done? Let’s pause and consider the prioritization quadrant for a moment.

Urgent vs Important

or another way to look at it would be

So, tomorrow is Friday so consider the things pulling for your time and let’s press in and press forward to accomplish what needs to be done now and plan for the things that will need to get done. Let’s choose to not be distracted by the things that aren’t important, especially those that aren’t important but are coming at you like they are in crisis.

As I reflect on things on my plate I see family things, like celebrating my daughter’s graduation including a party planned for tomorrow. I also see calling things like prepping the final details for camp to bless a bunch of teenage girls that are coming up soon. I also see a huge project for work with many tasks that need to get done. There are some things that are needing me to action today. There are some things that I need to plan out today. There are some things that I need to say no to and others that I will need to delegate.

How about you? What are you pressing in on? What are you pressing forward on? How are you prioritizing all the things pulling at your time?

Let’s choose to thrive for the glory of God!

‘Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. ‘

Galatians 5:24

So where are you at today? What is it that you are facing? What is it that you need to prioritize? What is it that you need to evaluate? What detour has entered the picture? What will you do? Where will you turn? How will you respond? Invite Jesus into your heart! Invite Jesus into the situation! Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and discernment to help you decide and move forward for the glory of God!

If you pray today’s prayer with me feel free to let me know so I can pray with you and for you too. (If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment then you can always try email.

Prayer Of Salvation
"Oh Father God, I believe with all of my heart that Jesus died on the cross for my sake and has risen from the dead. Lord, I receive Your Word and I repent of my sins. I renounce the past. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. I receive my forgiveness. I receive the new birth, cleansed and washed in the Word and in the precious blood of Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen."

THRIVE: With limited time left how will you use the time you have left?

Be it a child visiting for the weekend. Be it a child graduating from high school. Be it a child heading off to college in a couple months. Be it your parents leaving in a couple days. Whatever the case, we need to be good stewards of our time and make the most out of it.

Ever heard from people with terminal illnesses and how they start to live each day like it could be their last? Ever considered living every day like it will be your last in order to make the most of it? Do you think it would change your priorities? your schedule? your focus? your life? Realistically we all have a limited time left here on this planet, no matter if we are a baby or a senior, none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, and are called to make the most of our today!

So here we go, it’s Saturday morning! How will you choose to live out your today? What is a priority to you that you want and need to accomplish? What things are within your control and what things aren’t? What things would make it the best today ever? What would it take to make it a reality? What if you could do that every day?

Let’s make good choices today, being a good steward of the time we have, and choosing to thrive for the glory of God in and through it all!

Today’s Verse of the Day:

‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. ‘

Isaiah 43:2

Today’s post from Be The Dads is Just For Dads: Be A Positive Christian Role Model – Day 10

Where are you at today? How will you use the time you have left today? How will you choose to use the time you have? Are you ready to ask God for wisdom and direction? Are you ready to ask God for discernment and instruction? Invite Jesus into your heart! Invite Jesus into your life! Pursue Him and His will and His purpose for your life and decide to live life to the full!

If you pray today’s prayer with me feel free to let me know so I can pray with you and for you too. (If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment then you can always try email.

THRIVE: What’s on your calendar? Who gets to choose?

Ever looked at your calendar and wonder how your day got so filled up? Do you give your calendar up to God to manage or do you just pretend your calendar is like Tetris and look to fill it up and knock out the lines? Do you allow time to be led and directed by the Holy Spirit or are you too busy for that? Do you allow God to own your calendar and to add and remove things so that the right things are on it?

What brings this to mind is that my wife wrote out the calendar for today so my daughter and friends and grandparents would know about everything that is scheduled for today. After she put it out the girls then went and started to add to it. When I looked at it this morning I noticed a bunch of new things that weren’t part of the original plans. Some were gap fillers and others included extra details and yet others were things they chose to make up.

So how about you? What’s on your calendar today? Who gets to choose? How will it help or hinder your ability to thrive for the glory of God?

‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ‘

Acts 1:8

Today’s post from Be The Dads is Just For Dads: Be A Positive Christian Role Model – Day 4

So will you use your calendar to thrive and glorify God? Will you control your calendar or let it control you? Will you be rigid about your calendar or will you allow God to inject and adjust your calendar? Will you just go with the flow or will you live out your life with purpose, on purpose, and for a purpose? Will you invite Jesus into your life to help you navigate it? Will you invite Jesus into your heart to help you understand and be transformed?

If you pray today’s prayer with me feel free to let me know so I can pray with you and for you too. (If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment then you can always try email.

THRIVE: Making the most of the time we have.

Today I woke up with an interesting perspective on how important it is to make the most of the time we have if we want to thrive for the glory of God! Be it sending my wife with my daughter on a trip so that neither of them will need to go it alone and so that they both know how much they are loved. Be it spending my day with my son and helping him to realize the connection between building a computer and its components and how it is similar to the human body being put together. Getting to spend time with the girls last night watching some baseball. Getting to spend time with my son and pour love and wisdom into his life. The key for me this weekend is to make the most of the time I have with my family. Be it facetime with my parents and my daughter or in person with the rest of my family, the key is perspective and purpose behind making the most of the time we have! We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow and so let’s make the most of today!

Ever heard how you don’t know what you have till it’s gone? That’s not really true. You know what you have and get to choose what you will do with it! So today, let’s make the most out of what we have! Let’s make the most of every moment we have with our loved ones! Let’s make the most of every conversation we have with our loved ones! Let’s make the most out of everything we do with and for our loved ones!

Let’s make today count for the glory of God so that we can thrive in and through it!

Today’s Verse of the Day:

‘“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” ‘

Ephesians 6:2-3

Today’s post from Be The Dads is
Survival Gear for Dads – Day 5

So how will you make the most of your today? Will you consider it a gift from God and be able to rejoice in it? Will you consider it a gift from God and use it to serve those around you? Will you consider it a gift from God and ask Him how you can use it to its full potential? Not sure where to start? Invite Jesus into your heart and your life! Ask Him to give you wisdom and discernment to know what you should do! Allow Him to transform you from the inside out!

If you pray today’s prayer with me feel free to let me know so I can pray with you and for you too. (If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment then you can always try email.

THRIVE: We need to … and we get to!

Are you ready to go from surviving to thriving? Are you willing to go from surviving to thriving? Are you able to go from surviving to thriving? If not now then when? If not here then where? If not you then who? Let’s get it started now! Let’s be the catalyst that we need to be so that we can thrive for the glory of God!

Are you ready to adjust your calendar so that you can be healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually and grow vigorously? Are you ready to do what it takes to be healthy in order to be able to flourish? Are you ready to take a stand for what is good, what is right, and what is just so that you can take new ground regardless of your circumstances? Are you ready to lean in and trust God more than your own understanding? Are you ready to not give up and persevere through the struggles in order to make it to the breakthrough? Are you ready to choose unity at the speed of health? Are you ready to have a do-over if you messed up? Are you ready to reconcile and work towards forgiveness? Are you ready to be able to walk in the freedom Jesus paid for on Good Friday on the cross? Are you ready to come out the other side with the power and the promise of the resurrection? Let’s choose to be the difference! Let’s choose to make a difference! Let’s choose the be part of the solution rather than allowing ourselves to do nothing or worse be a part of the problem!

Let’s choose to thrive for the glory of God!

Verse of the Day:

‘We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. ‘

Isaiah 53:6

Today’s post from Be The Dads is Kill the Noise – Day 4

It’s Saturday after Good Friday, are you ready to receive and believe and live? It’s Saturday before Easter Sunday, are you ready to receive and believe and live? It’s today, thousands of years after Jesus paid the price to allow us the choice to be forgiven and reconciled to God, are you ready to receive and believe and live? We all have free will and we all get to make the choice for ourselves. We get to choose to live a life in a relationship with God or apart from God. We get to choose to live a life that will end with us getting to spend eternity with God or apart from God. Will you choose today to invite Jesus in so that you can be forgiven, reconciled, and start living a life in a relationship with Him for now and into eternity?

If you pray today’s prayer with me feel free to let me know so I can pray with you and for you too. (If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment then you can always try email or text.

THRIVE: What will today bring?

We need to leave yesterday where it belongs, in the past. We can take the lessons with us but leave anything and everything else behind. We can’t think about or worry about tomorrow because we aren’t guaranteed tomorrow. We need to focus on today! This is the day that the Lord has made and so let’s rejoice and be glad in it!

Will today bring good news or bad news? Will today bring comfort, pleasure, and peace or pain? Will today bring direction or distraction? Will today bring focus or indifference? Will today bring joy or sadness? Will today bring opportunity or threat? Will today bring challenges or acceptance? Will today bring war or peace? Will today bring unity or division? Will today bring trust or skepticism? Will today bring hope or pessimism and despair?

What will today bring? The bigger question is how will you respond?

We don’t get to choose what today will bring but we do get to choose how we will respond! So let’s choose to make today Happy Today! Let’s choose to make today Happy Today, no matter what! We have life, so let’s make today Happy Today! We have God, so let’s make today Happy Today! This is the day that the Lord has made, so let’s rejoice and be glad in it!

Today’s Verse of the Day

‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. ‘

1 John 1:9

Today’s post from Be The Dads is 10 Challenges Every Dad Must Conquer – Day 8

So where are you today? What struggles are you facing? Are you ready to attack the problems rather than the people? Are you ready to make sure your focus is on the right enemy? Are you ready to invite God into your situation so that you can have His perspective? Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart so that He is able to help you overcome rather than be overwhelmed? Are you ready to invite Jesus into your life so that you can live out the rest of your life as an overcome?

I am willing right now to turn from my sin and accept Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and Lord. I commit myself to you and ask you to send the Holy Spirit into my life, to fill me and take control, and to help me become the kind of person you want me to be. Thank You Father for loving me. In Jesus' name.
Amen.

Let’s Read the Bible Together (February)

catching up on the days I missed (back to Feb 9th)

THRIVE: Workweek is over and still decisions to be made…

Let us take hold of the reality of what we have learned through the book of Exodus when it comes to THRIVING and allow God’s Word to help us as we look ahead and into the future of this life. We learned about risk-taking, getting out of the boat, and allowing God to do new things in our lives, God answers prayer, and God is near to His people. We learned that God’s deepest work can come out through our trials, troubles, and pain. We learned how we are closer to a breakthrough than we think even during what we are going through. Just like the turbulence right before breaking through the sound barrier, life can get bumpy right before the breakthrough. During the struggle, we need to trust God and His choice of us for this calling and purpose rather than thinking we are the wrong choice. We need to trust God even when we do not understand. We need to keep turning to God when we do not know what to do or where to go. We need to fight our way through the pain, fear, and unbelief. God is in control! Do not give up! Lean in, kneel, and call out to God. We have learned the importance of picking our battles. We need to choose to fight the fight of trust – that God is good even when our circumstances are not. We need to choose to fight the fight of perseverance – to keep going and not quit (do not give in to the doubts and fears the devil is trying to use to get you to quit). We need to choose to fight the fight for unity – to move forward at the speed of health. We learned the why! It is important to know why! Why did God put Egypt through the plagues? Because He wanted to answer Pharoah’s question “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.” Egypt had a god for everything, and the plagues demonstrated that God was over and of them because they were not real gods. We need to understand WHY. Could simplification be the answer? What does that say and what does that mean for and to you? We learned the importance of leaving the things behind us to move forward to the things God has for us. We learned the importance of leaving the mistakes and trials of the past behind us. We learned the need to let go of the struggles and pains of the past. We learned the importance to instruct our kids. We learned God is so for you – taking you right where you are and leading you into a new beginning. We cannot get stuck in the past and not step up and step out into what God has planned for us. We need to do what we have to do to get where God needs us to be. We learned that we need to wake up to the reality of what is taking place instead of getting stuck we need to act. We need to pray and call on God rather than absorbing or accepting failure around us. We need to be able to accept success and breakthroughs when it is right in front of us. We cannot allow the fear of the unknown or the future to become our master again. We learned how we must let God make the change and take hold of the reality that God is able to exceedingly, abundantly more than you can ask or imagine. We learned how God wants to forgive you so much He came after you. He did all the work himself. Just needed to accept the gift. Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. We learned how God gave the cloud and the fire to comfort them. Do not let your heart be troubled. God has a change and a new way for you. God will stand between you and the enemy. We learned how today by faith in Christ you can be forgiven and start the journey with Him. He will never leave you nor forsake you. He will lead you and guide you. He will come behind you to watch your back. We learned that we need to do what God is telling us to do. We need to stop going backward. We need to stop surrendering when we are on the verge of a breakthrough. Start moving towards what God is calling you to. Dare to sow, to pray, to give your best. The things you can do so do it. We learned how God had the wind stack up the water into walls and dried the ground. Let us keep our eyes on the Lord and keep moving towards what He is showing us and telling us. Pharaoh woke up to a supply chain issue – he questioned why he let them go and just because one day their eyes may be opened to the reality of the situation, it does not mean that we should not be moving forward into the promised land and glory had prepared in advance for us to step into. God does not send you to hell, He opened the door to forgiveness and heaven, and we need to choose the final destination. You are the only one who can keep you from eternal life with God and forgiveness.

So, what is next for you? What will you decide? Are you ready to accept the change and move from surviving into thriving? Are you ready to receive what God has prepared in advance for you to do. Are you ready to accomplish the good works God has prepared in advance for you to do. Will you accept the calling? Will you step up and step out for the glory of God? The choice is yours! We have freewill and we can choose to be used by God or to abdicate our responsibility and calling. Remember the story of Esther and how she was called to save her people? Remember the story of when the people were praising Jesus and when told to tell them to stop, He answered that if they stopped the rocks would cry out

Today’s Verse of the Day:

‘Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. ‘

Proverbs 29:25

Let’s go to Him for wisdom and advice! Let’s be obedient to His instruction and go do it!

Let’s Read the Bible Together (February)

THRIVE: Turn to God! Find the joy in every situation!

After a great day with my family, dinner out with my wife, watching my daughter play some basketball, even in the midst of the blow out God is good and provides joy through it all. Joy of helping take down the tree. Joy of helping get the couch back in place. Joy of dinner with my beautiful wife. Joy of watching my daughter and her team play a tough game of basketball. Joy of coming home to my son and our dogs. There is joy in every situation. I consider the words I wrote on my window at work, back in the days when we went to the office and the assumptions that went along with it.

Happy Today!
Assumption 1: You are alive!
Assumption 2: No matter what happens!
 ∀ Today() = Happy!!

The bar is very low for every today to be happy! The assumptions tend to be easy to identify and achieve. If you are reading this then you are alive. Check Assumption 1 complete. What’s going to happen? Doesn’t matter, Assumption 2 says “No matter what happens”. Check Assumption 2 complete. So today’s let’s allow the joy of the Lord to be our strength so that we can thrive! Let’s let today be Happy Today! because of the overflow of the joy of the Lord in and through us!

Perspective makes a huge difference and impacts whether we will thrive, survive, or back up. Let’s move forward in the strength of God for His glory! Let’s take that step forward in order to glorify God and be an example to the world around us of how great our God is! It’s a choice we are all going to have to make today! Will we choose to let today be a Happy Today! or will we allow what happens to change our perspective on how great God is and that this is the day that the Lord has made and so we should rejoice and be glad in it. The choice is yours! Will you cling to God and allow today to be filled with the joy of the Lord? Will you turn your back and decide to have a sucky day?

I am excited to get to attend church this morning as the theme for this series is THRIVE. I am excited to get to hear from God’s Word in the book of Exodus and how through the story of Moses, God will encourage me as I step into this new week of uncertainty. Last week closed with an incredible phone call on my son’s birthday. God knew I needed a bit of a pick me up as I was having a pretty rough morning, and it was FRIDAY. It should have been HAPPY FRIDAY! since today()=Friday. But I was struggling and kept turning and praying and casting my cares upon God. I know He cares for me. I know He will never leave me and never abandon me. I know that I am never alone for God is with me. He was helping me get through the day and to make sure I stepped into the weekend uplifted and encouraged, God provided a call from a long-time friend and mentor to pick me up. God is so good! All the time! All the time! God is good!

Today’s verse of the day:

‘ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. ‘

Matthew 5:6

Today’s post from Be The Dads is Strange Words – A Dad’s Prayer For His Children – Day 7

So are you struggling with finding joy? Are you struggling to thrive? Are you looking for a source of hope? Are you looking for a source of strength? Are you looking for a source of joy? Let’s invite Jesus into the situation! Let’s invite Him into our hearts to help fill it up with joy that overflows from it. Let’s invite Him into our lives as our Lord and Savior so that we can be new, we can be transformed, we can have joy.

Let’s pray:

Dear God
I admit I am a sinner and need your forgiveness; I believe that Jesus Christ died in my place paying the penalty for my sins.
Amen.

THRIVE: Another work week busy with stuff, will you allow it to help you thrive?

The third week in and just past the halfway point of the week, got many of the todo items into the to the done column before some new action items appear. Got the learning session doc buttoned up and ready for if or when the time comes to share it. Got the review feedback done in prep for the next phase of the year-end review. Knowing that depending on how things shake down there might be even more change or adjustment to the structure I have been used to seeing. And yet it’s today! This is the day that the Lord has made, so let’s rejoice and be glad in it! Let’s choose to let today be Happy Today because it is the day that the Lord has made! It’s always today, no matter what day you are reading this and so grabbing hold of making it a Happy Today always fits. God has called 2022 to be a year to move on from just surviving and starting to thrive. Let’s not get stuck in the past but press forward into God’s plans and purposes to achieve greater things for His glory. Will you join me in making 2022 a year to thrive?

Today’s verse of the day comes to us from 1 Corinthians 13 and says:

‘No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. ‘

1 Corinthians 10:13

Whenever I read this one I remember how not only will God allow us to endure the temptation but He also provides us with a way out! Many times we get stuck because we are enjoying or thinking that we are finding the temptation pleasurable when we should be looking for the door God has for us to use to get out of there. We need to look away! The temptation that comes our way comes at everyone, it is a matter of what we do about it. Let’s grab on to what God’s Word tells us about temptation so that we can step into today aware and prepared:

  • ‘When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. ‘ James 1:13-18
  • ‘On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” ‘ Luke 22:40
  • ‘ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ’ ‘ Matthew 6:13
  • ‘What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us ? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. ‘ James 4:1-10
  • ‘But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. ‘ 1 Timothy 6:6-10

Let’s choose to thrive living for God rather than surviving by going through the temptations of the devil.

Today’s post from Be The Dads is What Dad Needs – Day 2.

So is today the day you will receive Jesus into your life? Is today the day you will invite Him into your heart to help you live out a life that can resist or turn or escape the troubles of falling into temptation? Are you ready to be transformed and live a new life today? Let’s pray:

Dear God
I admit I am a sinner and need your forgiveness; I believe that Jesus Christ died in my place paying the penalty for my sins.
Amen.

Decision time… How do you know what to do?

I read a message this morning and triggered thoughts of a year gone by. When you go through a tough year, how do you decide if the challenges, the struggles, the trials, the tests, the pain, and the suffering are signs to move on or a time to build your faith strength? In my case, I kept leaning on God and He helped build my faith, He strengthened my family bond and unit, He kept telling me to stay in the midst of it all and never opened a door to step out or step away. It was also necessary as I look back to help me reset and prepare for the new role God had prepared in advance with an incredible new team to lead. The message I read brought this flashback moment because I was curious if that person’s decision was triggered by similar challenges and struggles. I was curious if that person’s decision to get out was directed by God or fear for what reviews and such might look like. I was curious if that person’s decision to get out was triggered by someone else offering them a new role and change. I may never know or it may be something discussed later in life but either way, it made me go back to decision time and how for me I turned to God to get the wisdom and discernment I needed to be able to both decide and press through it. I had picked up my lessons from years gone by and led with forgiveness! I then was able to seek wisdom and discernment from God to know what to do, where to go, how to proceed. And this past year for me with my new team has been incredible with both incredible managers as well as with incredible team members. God is good and He can use all things, even the bad or painful ones, and turn them around and use them for good! God’s got a perspective we can’t have or see from and so we need to trust Him, we need to lean on God rather than our own understanding, we need to go it His way that is so much higher and better than our ways.

It’s New Year’s Eve-eve today and many people will be thinking about making a decision heading into the New Year. What decision are you considering? What is the motivation for the decision? What is the purpose of the decision? Is it self-driven or God-driven? Is it something that you will commit to or is it like many of the New Year resolutions that rarely make it through January? Important things to consider since you still have a couple of days to get it figured out.

BIG CHOICES

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘“Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known. ‘

Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Let’s look to get more context and details for today’s Bible verses by expanding the verses around it and using the Amplified version for extra details.

‘“Therefore you shall love the Lord your God, and always keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments [it is your obligation to Him]. Know this day that I am not speaking to your children who have not known [by personal experience] and who have not seen [firsthand] the instruction and discipline of the Lord your God—His greatness, His mighty hand and His outstretched arm; and His signs and His works which He did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land; and what He did to the army of Egypt, to its horses and its chariots, when He made the water of the Red Sea engulf them as they pursued you, and how the Lord completely destroyed them; and what He did to you in the wilderness until you came to this place; and what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel. For your eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord which He did. “Therefore, you shall keep all the commandments which I am commanding you today, so that you may be strong and go in and take possession of the land which you are crossing over [the Jordan] to possess; so that you may live long on the land which the Lord swore (solemnly promised) to your fathers to give to them and to their descendants, a land [of great abundance,] flowing with milk and honey. For the land which you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your foot like a garden of vegetables. But the land into which you are about to cross to possess, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. “It shall come about, if you listen obediently and pay attention to My commandments which I command you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul [your choices, your thoughts, your whole being]— that He will give the rain for your land in its season, the early [fall] rain and the late [spring] rain, so that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your [olive] oil. And He will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. Beware that your hearts are not deceived, and that you do not turn away [from the Lord ] and serve other gods and worship them, or [else] the Lord’s anger will be kindled and burn against you, and He will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the land will not yield its fruit; and you will perish quickly from the good land which the Lord is giving you. “Therefore, you shall impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul, and tie them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as bands (frontals, frontlets) on your forehead. You shall teach them [diligently] to your children [impressing God’s precepts on their minds and penetrating their hearts with His truths], speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. For if you are careful to keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do, to love the Lord your God, to walk [that is, to live each and every day] in all His ways and to hold tightly to Him— then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall become yours; your territory shall be from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as the western sea (the Mediterranean). No man will be able to stand before you; the Lord your God will lay the fear and the dread of you on all the land on which you set foot, just as He has spoken to you. “Behold, today I am setting before you a blessing and a curse— the blessing, if you listen to and obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to and obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following (acknowledging, worshiping) other gods which you have not known. “It shall come about, when the Lord your God brings you into the land which you are entering to possess, that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. Are they not across the Jordan, west of the road, toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh? For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall possess it and live in it, and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am setting before you today.’

Deuteronomy 11:1-32

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever noticed how God can make the right choice more appealing that the wrong choice?
  • As you consider the above scripture about the benefits of following God’s law do you see how He desires us to make the right choice?
  • Today’s devotional put it the options this way: “You have a choice. You can have a thousand dollars in cash or a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Which one do you want?”
  • Throughout history we have seen many times where people have chosent the stick in the eye.
  • Ever wondered when the options are so clear how anyone could make the wrong choice?
  • The sad part is that they do and so do we.
  • God has made Himself clear about the right and wrong decisions and yet people have struggled to receive it.
  • Consider Eve in the garden and how Satan came to tempt her and confuse her understanding of what God had said.
    • ‘Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. ‘
      Genesis 3:1-7
  • Satan is trying to get us off track and bring confusion and try to cause us to doubt or question God’s authority and goodness.
  • What if Eve had of responded with “Yes, but He gave us all of the rest of these, and that’s plenty!”?
  • What choices are you facing today?
  • What does God say about your options?
  • Will you trust God?
  • Will you trust His plans?
  • Will you trust His authority?
  • Will you trust His goodness?
  • Or are you allowing Satan to create a wedge between you and God because questioning or doubt?
  • Will you allow doubt and questioning to cause you to walk away from God like what happened to Eve?
  • Are you being tempted today?
  • Are you being tempted to doubt God?
  • Are you being tempted to doubt God’s goodness?
  • Are you being tempted to doubt God’s authority?
  • Are you being tempted to doubt the importance of having God as the centerpiece of your life?
  • Do you think you can do it and nobody will ever know or find out? God knows.
  • Do you think you could have sex with that person because it sounds really good and you think you can do it without anyone finding out? God knows.
  • Do you think you can blow of that responsibility you have since you don’t think anyone will get hurt by it? God knows.
  • Do you think making up stories or lying about something or someone might help you get ahead quicker and coming up with stories why it won’t hurt them or how they weren’t going to be impacted or try for that opportunity anyway? God knows.
  • Do you think overeating won’t be a problem and won’t hurt? God knows.
  • Do you realize how such talk, thoughts, and conversations cause or create doubt over God’s goodness, God’s authority, and hence puts into question the benefits of obedience.
  • What will be your big choice today?
  • It may seem small in the moment but the question is will your decision move you closer to God or further away with each and every one?
  • Will you choose wisely and receive the wonderful blessings?
  • Will you choose unwisely and receive the painful curse?
  • The choice is yours! We all have freewill.
  • So will you choose blessings or curses?
  • The decision is yours! Why not be prepared in advance so that when you are faced with the situation you know the right answer and are ready to make it.

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • What are the choices you face each day that question or affirm God’s authority in your life?
  • Which path are you on? How much progress are you making?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

There is no failure in God’s will, and no success outside of God’s will.

George W Truett

So are you facing a big choice today? Are you considering making a decision heading out of the current and into the coming year? Are you considering how it aligns with God’s will for your life? Are you ready to invite God into the situation in order to receive His wisdom and guidance? Are you ready to start making your decisions in a way that will bring God glory? Are you ready to grab hold of 1 Corinthians 10:31 that says: ‘So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God. ‘? Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.

from the dead and I ask you right now to
come in to my life and be my personal
Lord and Savior. I repent of my Sins and
will Worship you all the day's of my Life!
Because your word is truth, I confess with
my mouth that I am Born Again and
Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus

Top 3…All things considered what are yours?

Ever been at a point in your life where you had to go back and reprioritize things? Ever gotten to the breaking point where your health was starting to suffer and as such, you needed to make a change? Ever gotten to a crossroads where you needed to make a choice? I know I have.

My diabetes was going out of whack and so my doctor sent me to the diabetic educator to help me both with counting carbs (which was a new method for me) as well as getting a refresher on diabetes evolution since the last time I had training which had been almost 25 years. This was an aha moment where I realized that the way I was living needed to change. The stresses I was dealing with had to change. The hours I was working had to change. The way I was spending my time had to change. I was at a crossroads where I had to make a choice of changing and getting better or staying the same and letting myself and my family down by allowing my body to get worse. So the decision was made that I was going to change. So I took inventory of what I said my priorities were and how my life wasn’t being lived out in alignment with it. God was to be first! My wife and marriage were to be second. My child and family were to be third. Everything else was going to have to take a spot after that. So work had to change, 3-4 hours of sleep a night wasn’t going to cut it anymore. I remember going through the process of thinking about how the company hired smart people and so I didn’t and shouldn’t have to babysit. So I would delegate and verify rather than continuously monitor and give them the power to inform me if they needed my help with something. I remember thinking about my volunteer time both on the HOA board as well as at church. I know God called me to serve and I had accomplished what He had wanted me to do when I took that final step of being president and fixing up the structure of things. I know God gifted me with tech and management skills to serve Him and so I stuck with the serving within worship & arts at the church and stepped down from the HOA board. These changes helped me spend more time on my top 3. These adjustments helped my health improve. This also was a turning point to switching to an insulin pump which over the years has continued to help my diabetes control get better and better. Having my priorities straight in my head, knowing my top 3 helped me to say no to things that conflicted or were lower priority. And even over the years as my child became children, having the priorities straight continues to have a huge impact on me and how I choose to live my life.

How about you? What are your top 3? Have you ever gone through the exercise of deciding what are your top 3? Have you then done the work to make sure you are living in alignment with your top 3? Have you had to make changes to ensure that your top 3 are your top 3 and evident by the way you are choosing to live? If you haven’t then why not take some time today to figure it out. Ways to see what others will think are your priorities are to check out your calendar and how you spend your time then check your transactions on your bank account to see where your money is going.

Ready to live out your life with the right top priorities so that you can be everything God created you to be? Thanks to God and that wake-up call, I am! God first! Marriage second! Family third! Everything else comes after this priority wise and so it may mean saying no to some of them.

Three Things God Requires

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?’

Micah 6:8

Ever considered the context of this? Let’s check it out and use the Amplified version to try and fill in some spots we may have missed.

‘Hear now what the Lord is saying, “Arise, plead your case before the mountains, And let the hills [as witnesses] hear your voice. Hear, O mountains, the indictment of the Lord , And you enduring foundations of the earth, For the Lord has a case (a legal complaint) against His people, And He will dispute (challenge) Israel. O My people, what have I done to you [since you have turned away from Me]? And how have I wearied you? Answer Me. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt And ransomed you from the house of slavery, And I sent before you Moses [to lead you], Aaron [the high priest], and Miriam [the prophetess]. My people, remember now What Balak king of Moab devised [with his evil plan against Israel] And what Balaam the son of Beor answered him [turning the curse into blessing for Israel], [Remember what the Lord did for you] from Shittim to Gilgal, So that you may know the righteous and saving acts [displaying the power] of the Lord .” With what shall I come before the Lord [to honor Him] And bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves? Will the Lord be delighted with thousands of rams, Or with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my acts of rebellion, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you Except to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion), And to walk humbly with your God [setting aside any overblown sense of importance or self-righteousness]? The voice of the Lord shall call to the city [of Jerusalem]— And it is sound wisdom to heed [solemnly] and fear Your name [with awe-filled reverence]; “Hear, O tribe [the rod of punishment]. Who has appointed its time? Are there not still treasures gained by wickedness In the house of the wicked, And a short (inaccurate) measure [for grain] that is cursed? Can I [be guiltless and] justify deceptive scales And a bag of dishonest weights? For the rich men of the city are full of violence [of every kind]; Her inhabitants speak lies And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. So also I will make you sick, striking you down, Desolating and devastating you, because of your sins. You shall eat, but you will not be satisfied, And your emptiness shall be among you; You will [try to] remove [your goods and those you love] for safekeeping But you will fail to save anything, And what you do save I shall give to the sword. You shall sow but you shall not reap; You shall tread olives, but shall not anoint yourself with oil, And [you will extract juice from] the grapes, but you shall not drink the wine. For [you have kept] the statutes of Omri [the idolatrous king], And all the works of the [wicked] house (dynasty) of Ahab; And you walk in their counsels and policies. Therefore, I shall hand you over for destruction and horror And your [city’s] inhabitants for ridicule, And you shall bear the rebuke and scorn of My people.”’

Micah 6:1-16

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever been faced with questions about what you are doing?
  • Ever been in or seen a courtroom of where someone is being accused of being disloyal?
  • Ever been in or seen a courtroom of where someone is being accused of being fraudulent?
  • Ever noticed the tone of the prosecuting attourney?
  • Imagine how Micah had of sounded as he represented God to the people and accused them.
  • The difference we find here is that instead of having an accusatory tone like the prosecutor in a trial would have, God pleads with His people and tries to remind them of all the times He has shown up and rescued them from trouble.
  • We see how God doesn’t want to have to judge them but wants to build them up.
  • We see how like teenagers who got caught and pretend to be sorry, the people responded with fake repentence.
    • ‘With what shall I come before the L ord [to honor Him] And bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves? Will the L ord be delighted with thousands of rams, Or with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my acts of rebellion, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? ‘ Micah 6:6-7
  • We see in today’s verse how Micah intercedes, he steps in and calmly speaks to the people when he says:
    • ‘He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the L ord require of you Except to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion), And to walk humbly with your God [setting aside any overblown sense of importance or self-righteousness]? ‘ Micah 6:8
  • Micah brings the truth to the people in a calming way.
  • He brings it back to the 3 core requirements.
  • He respond to their crazy statements by simplifying and speaking the truth in love that what God requires is for the people (that includes you and me) to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.
  • That’s it! Are you ready to try living out your life that way?
  • Let’s not rebel and grieve God’s heart!
  • Let’s not ignore God and grieve His heart!
  • Let’s not mock God in our response to his 3 requirements.
  • Let’s make good choices!
  • Let’s treat people right and show His love and mercy to others!
  • Let’s humbly accept and receive His love into our lives and hearts!
  • Let’s humbly accept and receive His acceptance of us into our lives and hearts!
  • Let’s humbly accept and receive His forgiveness of us into our lives and hearts!
  • Ready? Set? Go!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • Have you ever responded to God in an over-the-top way like the people of Israel responded to Him? If you did, what were the circumstances?
  • What does it [or would it] look like in your life ot make good choices, rightly place your affections, and humbly embrace God’s love, acceptance, and forgiveness?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“Many times I have people come forth and say I have missed my calling, that I should have been a preacher. I find this both flattering and very humorous because, even though I’m not preaching, I am spreading the Word.”

Would you rather keep trying to measure up or come under authority?

Life is an interesting thing and people choose to live out their lives differently based on their perspective. Some aim for the star and keep pressing in and pressing on trying to measure up to a standard that is nearly impossible to reach. Others have found that living under the right authority is a better option and so live their lives content and in submission to the authority. How about you? How are you choosing to live your life?

Are you looking to live your life to perfection? Do you realize what the Bible says about us as human beings? Do you realize that God took things into His own hands and sent His Son? Do you grasp the reality of why Jesus had to come, sacrifice Himself, and conquer the grave? Do you grasp the reality of how He is now sitting at the right hand of the Father and the next time He comes back here will be the end?

Have you grasped the reality of Jesus and your imperfection? Have you decided that you will live your life under His authority and in relationship with Him? Are you looking forward to the day of His return and getting to spend eternity with Him? Have you decided that you want to spend eternity with God in Heaven rather than apart from God in Hell?

How will you choose to live out your today? How will you choose to live out your right now? How will you choose to live the rest of your life (with the unknown of when it will end)? How will you choose to spend the rest of eternity? The choice is yours! The decision is yours! And they will determine your final destination!

Whether we believe it or choose it, Jesus is Lord and Savior! We don’t have to believe God’s Word for it to be true, if God said it then that settles it! We don’t have to believe Jesus is Lord and Savior for Him to be Lord and Savior, He is the Lord and Savior of the world. All we get to do is decide if we will accept it in order to determine our final destination!

So will you believe it? So will you choose it? Where are you at when it comes to trying to measure up vs coming under authority?

Measuring Up To Jesus

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; ‘

Ephesians 4:11-13

Let’s grab some additional context from the Amplified version and some additional verses:

‘So I, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to you to live a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called [that is, to live a life that exhibits godly character, moral courage, personal integrity, and mature behavior—a life that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation], with all humility [forsaking self-righteousness], and gentleness [maintaining self-control], with patience, bearing with one another in [unselfish] love. Make every effort to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the bond of peace [each individual working together to make the whole successful]. There is one body [of believers] and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when called [to salvation]— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all who is [sovereign] over all and [working] through all and [living] in all. Yet grace [God’s undeserved favor] was given to each one of us [not indiscriminately, but in different ways] in proportion to the measure of Christ’s [rich and abundant] gift. Therefore it says, “W hen H e ascended on high , H e led captivity captive , A nd H e bestowed gifts on men .” (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had previously descended [from the heights of heaven] into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the very same as He who also has ascended high above all the heavens, that He [His presence] might fill all things [that is, the whole universe]). And [His gifts to the church were varied and] He Himself appointed some as apostles [special messengers, representatives], some as prophets [who speak a new message from God to the people], some as evangelists [who spread the good news of salvation], and some as pastors and teachers [to shepherd and guide and instruct], [and He did this] to fully equip and perfect the saints (God’s people) for works of service, to build up the body of Christ [the church]; until we all reach oneness in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, [growing spiritually] to become a mature believer, reaching to the measure of the fullness of Christ [manifesting His spiritual completeness and exercising our spiritual gifts in unity]. So that we are no longer children [spiritually immature], tossed back and forth [like ships on a stormy sea] and carried about by every wind of [shifting] doctrine, by the cunning and trickery of [unscrupulous] men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything [for personal profit]. But speaking the truth in love [in all things—both our speech and our lives expressing His truth], let us grow up in all things into Him [following His example] who is the Head—Christ. From Him the whole body [the church, in all its various parts], joined and knitted firmly together by what every joint supplies, when each part is working properly, causes the body to grow and mature, building itself up in [unselfish] love. ‘

  • Are you ready to take hold of the command to love our neighbors as ourselves?
  • Are you ready to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength in order for His love to fill you to overflowing into the world around you?
  • Are you ready to be showing so much love to other Christians that non-Christians are going to want some of that?
  • Are you ready to love other Christians and keep the main thing the main thing rather than arguing about flowers, rugs, paint colors, and more?
  • Are you ready to love other Christians enough to try and counteract what society is seeing in church splits and Christian arguments?
  • Let’s decide to love people like God loves us, unconditionally!
  • Let’s decided to love people like God loves us, so that we can grow and become more like Him!
  • Let’s decided to love people like God loves us, so that we can be filled to overflowing with Jesus’s grace, truth, and purpose!
  • Let’s decide to love people like God loves us, so that everything we do reflects Him to those around us!
  • Let’s decide not to be that church that is lukewarm! We don’t want to get spit up when Jesus comes back, right?
  • Let’s be on fire, hot for Jesus Christians that will shine so bright that others will take notice and be drawn to Him!
  • Let’s stop being people who tolerate others and become people who love others!
  • Let’s stop being people who survive but instead become people who thrive and are overcomers!
  • Let’s decide to be people who will touch the lives of those God brings across our path!

What allows some things to persist, endure, remain while other things fade away?

Ever wonder why some things come and some things go? Ever wondered why some things endure while others fade away? Ever wondered why some things remain while other things have disappeared? Ever wondered what it takes to persist rather than stop? Ever wondered what it takes to carry on rather than abandon?

Ever considered the status of various civilizations around the world? Ever considered the status of various empires around the world? Ever considered the status of various countries around the world? Why have some lasted and others faded away? Why have some changed and others have remained the same? Why have some fallen and others are standing strong? What is it that makes the difference? What is the foundation that keeps them up? What is the truth that remains?

What things have you seen come and go in your lifetime? What things have you seen disappear in your lifetime? What things do you think will stick around and what things will disappear that exist today? Why? Is it their foundation? Is it their principle? Is it there structure?

Ministry That Lasts

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. ‘

I Corinthians 3:12-14

Let’s take a look at the broader context of this statement. Let’s dig a bit deeper with the Amplified translation too:

‘ What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Ministering servants [not heads of parties] through whom you believed, even as the Lord appointed to each his task: I planted, Apollos watered, but God [all the while] was making it grow and [He] gave the increase. So neither he who plants is anything nor he who waters, but [only] God Who makes it grow and become greater. He who plants and he who waters are equal (one in aim, of the same importance and esteem), yet each shall receive his own reward (wages), according to his own labor. For we are fellow workmen (joint promoters, laborers together) with and for God; you are God’s garden and vineyard and field under cultivation, [you are] God’s building. [Isa. 61:3.] According to the grace (the special endowment for my task) of God bestowed on me, like a skillful architect and master builder I laid [the] foundation, and now another [man] is building upon it. But let each [man] be careful how he builds upon it, For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is [already] laid, which is Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). But if anyone builds upon the Foundation, whether it be with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, The work of each [one] will become [plainly, openly] known (shown for what it is); for the day [of Christ] will disclose and declare it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test and critically appraise the character and worth of the work each person has done. If the work which any person has built on this Foundation [any product of his efforts whatever] survives [this test], he will get his reward. But if any person’s work is burned up [under the test], he will suffer the loss [of it all, losing his reward], though he himself will be saved, but only as [one who has passed] through fire. [Job 23:10.] Do you not discern and understand that you [the whole church at Corinth] are God’s temple (His sanctuary), and that God’s Spirit has His permanent dwelling in you [to be at home in you, collectively as a church and also individually]? If anyone does hurt to God’s temple or corrupts it [with false doctrines] or destroys it, God will do hurt to him and bring him to the corruption of death and destroy him. For the temple of God is holy (sacred to Him) and that [temple] you [the believing church and its individual believers] are.’

1 Corinthians 3:5-17

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • So pop quiz, how well have you been living your life to this point?
  • On the day when you will get judged for what you did and didn’t do, how will you be graded?
  • On the day when you will get judged for what you were obedient or disobedient, how will you be graded?
  • If you are a believer, this is the grading to determine your rating in heaven, not the white judgment throne that non-believes will have to go before.
  • As believers this is where we will be rewarded for our actions to honor God!
  • For believers Jesus is our firm foundation on which to build our lives.
  • The question then is what will we build upon such a firm foundation.
  • Per today’s verse, we see that everything we built on that foundation will be put through the test or to the test to see what will endure and not get burned up.
  • Have you been building up things that are temporary and will get burned up?
  • Have you been building up things that will last and be in eternity too?
  • If you consider the precious metals like gold, silver, and stones like rubies, sapphires, diamond that will go through the fire unharmed, is that the type of things you are storing up in heaven by the deeds you are doing?
  • If you consider things that would get burned up in fire like wood, hay, and straw, is that the type of things you are investing your time and efforts in that will be temporary and then be gone?
  • So today as we consider how we will choose to live our life and what we will decide to do with the time we have, will we choose to invest in things that will last or things that will get burned up? Will we invest in the lives of others in hopes they will receive Jesus and join us in heaven? Will we invest in games, TV, or other things that will fade away and get burned up in the fire?
  • We get to choose how we will invest this life we have been given and how we will be graded when it gets put through the fire to be refined or burned up.
  • We get to choose if it will be a great day or a bad day.
  • We have freewill remember, and so we get to choose how we will use our time today. and everyday we get.
  • So are you motivated knowing this to choose to live out your today in a way that will have a promise of a reward or a promise of ashes?
  • Will you try to see things through Jesus’s eyes which choice you make?
  • Will you make time to listen to others?
  • Will you make time to speak encouragement to others?
  • Will you make time to work with integrity and truth?
  • Will you make time to make sure the numbers are accurate and correct?
  • Will you make time to speak the truth without exaggeration?
  • Will you decide to do the right thing because it is more important to hear “well done” from God than receiving accolades or possessions from people?
  • Today we will be faced with choices! Let’s choose wisely!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • If Christ gave you a report card today, how would He grade you up to this point in your journey of faith?
  • What are two or three things you need to change to get a better report card?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.”

― Corrie ten Boom

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

Where are you at today? What are you working on that is temporary? What are you working on that will last? How are you deciding where to focus and put your attention? How are you deciding to live in order to make a bigger difference? Do you need to change the foundation you are building on to something firm rather than shifting sand? Do you need to change the foundation from something temporary to something that will last? Let’s pray:

You realize it isn’t all about stuff, right?

Ever noticed how there are many in this world who think that the goal is to see who gets the most? Ever noticed how there are many in this world that are focused on consuming and receiving stuff? Ever noticed how there are many in this world who because they compare themselves to others keep trying to acquire more?

Ever considered why in marketing people are call consumers? Example being the Consumers Report. Do you realize that the origin of when people started getting called consumers was labeled to people who squandered or wasted things? That’s right it wasn’t a good thing. Somehow over time (~300 years) the meaning got diluted to mean people who use goods and services. Even when the meaning was diluted the reality is that money and materialism that fuel consumerism can’t buy you happiness. This has been a problem since near the beginning which is why in God’s Commandments we are told not to covet. So we should not covet or “desire (someone or something) obsessively, wrongfully, and/or without due regard for the rights/feelings of others.” So we should not covet for it will waste our lives fruitlessly obsessing over objects of our desire. To covet is more than a feeling, it becomes an attempt to attain something from their neighbor (remember neighbor in Jesus’s message – think of your neighbor as everyone you come in contact with) – and so covet is taking action too. Coveting leads to planning, scheming, and then acting. So let’s not be so materialistic that we try to keep up with the Jones’s.

Let’s be more focused on being so rich in love that we can love God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Let’s be more focused on being so rich in love that we don’t run out there but are able to overflow into the lives of those around us as we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. Let’s be focused on being rich in LOVE! As we learn and read about what will last in 1 Corinthians 13, we find that everything else will pass away except faith, hope, and love!

So let’s not be wasting our time and energy on things that won’t glorify God! Let’s be using our time and energy to bring God praise, honor, and glory! Let’s be using our resources to bless God and God’s purpose in our lives! Let’s be using our resources to accomplish the cause God has put inside each of us! We are the body and just like the human body we each have a purpose and a responsibility in order to keep the body healthy and strong! We each have a purpose God created us to accomplish! Interestingly enough the body analogy comes in the earlier chapter of 1 Corinthians 12 where it reads:

‘For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts, though many, form [only] one body, so it is with Christ. For by one [Holy] Spirit we were all baptized into one body, [spiritually transformed—united together] whether Jews or Greeks (Gentiles), slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit [since the same Holy Spirit fills each life]. For the [human] body does not consist of one part, but of many [limbs and organs]. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” is it not on the contrary still a part of the body? If the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” is it not on the contrary still a part of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole [body] were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But now [as things really are], God has placed and arranged the parts in the body, each one of them, just as He willed and saw fit [with the best balance of function]. If they all were a single organ, where would [the rest of] the body be? But now [as things really are] there are many parts [different limbs and organs], but a single body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” But quite the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are [absolutely] necessary; and as for those parts of the body which we consider less honorable, these we treat with greater honor; and our less presentable parts are treated with greater modesty, while our more presentable parts do not require it. But God has combined the [whole] body, giving greater honor to that part which lacks it, so that there would be no division or discord in the body [that is, lack of adaptation of the parts to each other], but that the parts may have the same concern for one another. And if one member suffers, all the parts share the suffering; if one member is honored, all rejoice with it. Now you [collectively] are Christ’s body, and individually [you are] members of it [each with his own special purpose and function]. So God has appointed and placed in the church [for His own use]: first apostles [chosen by Christ], second prophets [those who foretell the future, those who speak a new message from God to the people], third teachers, then those who work miracles, then those with the gifts of healings, the helpers, the administrators, and speakers in various kinds of [unknown] tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire and strive for the greater gifts [if acquiring them is going to be your goal]. A nd yet I will show you a still more excellent way [one of the choicest graces and the highest of them all: unselfish love].’

1 Corinthians 12:12-31

So today let’s focus on how we can love better, love more, and even love the unlovable as a way of worshipping God. God so loved us that He sent Jesus! We know what love is because God first loved us!

Prosperity Theology — Really!

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. ‘

III John 1:2

The Amplified gives us a bit more context around this statement when it says:

‘Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually]. ‘

3 John 1:2

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever noticed how much stuff there is?
  • Ever noticed how much people try to get more stuff?
  • Ever noticed how some people can never get enough stuff?
  • Ever noticed the wealth that exists?
  • Ever noticed the what about me, I don’t want to be left out, … attitudes?
  • What is your focus? Is it more stuff? (possessions) Is it doing more things? (pleasures)
  • Are you leading that way and causing others to fall into that same trap or pit?
  • What does it mean to you when the Bible speaks to God wanting us to prosper?
  • Let’s consider Luke 12 and what it has to say:
    • ‘Then He told them a parable, saying, “There was a rich man whose land was very fertile and productive. And he began thinking to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place [large enough in which] to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my storehouses and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many good things stored up, [enough] for many years; rest and relax, eat, drink and be merry (celebrate continually).” ’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own all the things you have prepared?’ So it is for the one who continues to store up and hoard possessions for himself, and is not rich [in his relationship] toward God.” Jesus said to His disciples, “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; or about your body, as to what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the crop]; they have no storehouse or barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add one hour to his life’s span? So if you are not even able to do a very little thing [such as that], why are you worried about the rest? Consider the lilies and wildflowers, how they grow [in the open field]. They neither labor nor spin [wool to make clothing]; yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these. But if this is how God clothes the grass which is in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You of little faith! So as for you, do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink; nor have an anxious and unsettled mind. For all the [pagan] nations of the world greedily seek these things; and your [heavenly] Father [already] knows that you need them. But [strive for and actively] seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid and anxious, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. “Sell your possessions (show compassion) and give [donations] to the poor. Provide money belts for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing and inexhaustible treasure in the heavens, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ‘
      Luke 12:16-34
  • Are you ready to love God so much that everything else doesn’t measure up or even compare to it?
  • Are you ready to give up or consecrate or crucify yourself for the glory of God? Remember how we are to crucify ourselves daily? Remember how we are to pick up our cross daily? Remember how when the Israelites were about to cross over to the promised land that they had to prepare themselves and consecrate themselves?
  • So are you ready to live your life out of an abundance of love for God so that you can live a life that demonstrates your affection and obedience to God?
  • Let’s not be focused on selfish desires.
  • Let’s focus on God’s promises! God’s promises are true!
  • Ever heard you can’t out give God? It’s true! But what you receive back in return is different than more stuff, it is true blessings!
  • Ever tested God in your ability to give? It is the one thing we learn and read in Malachi where God says “test in me”. Could you imagine being accused by God of robbing Him?
    • ‘“Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings [you have withheld]. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, this whole nation! Bring all the tithes (the tenth) into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you [so great] a blessing until there is no more room to receive it. Then I will rebuke the devourer (insects, plague) for your sake and he will not destroy the fruits of the ground, nor will your vine in the field drop its grapes [before harvest],” says the Lord of hosts. “All nations shall call you happy and blessed, for you shall be a land of delight,” says the Lord of hosts. “Your words have been harsh against Me,” says the Lord . “But you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’ You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. What profit is it if we keep His ordinances, and walk around like mourners before the Lord of hosts? So now we call the arrogant happy and blessed. Evildoers are exalted and prosper; and when they test God, they escape [unpunished].’ ” ‘
      Malachi 3:8-15
  • Let’s not lose hope in wanting the best for ourselves and our families, but let’s make sure to check our hearts and minds to understand the intentions and reasons.
  • Let’s pray to stay healthy in order to be able to worship, serve, and praise God!
  • Let’s pray to be prosperous in order to be able to worship, serve, and praise God!
  • Let’s make sure that we are praying God’s will and God’s desire!
  • Remember how it says in Psalm 37 that God will give you the desires of your heart? Do you remember the if part of that if/then statement? Let’s make sure to take hold of that when we pray and why we are praying it.
    • ‘Delight yourself in the Lord , And He will give you the desires and petitions of your heart. ‘
      Psalms 37:4
  • Are you praying for health and prosperity in order to delight yourself in the Lord? Are you praying for your hope in the Lord? Are you seeking God’s will and purpose in order that He will bless you in it?
  • It may not always be the easy road but following Jesus is the road to eternity in heaven.
  • Let’s hold tightly to the promises of God as he uses every circumstance that is in and comes into our lives will help build up our love, our lives, and our soul.
  • Let’s hold loosely to the material things in our lives that one day won’t last so that we can press in and press forward for the glory of God!
  • Let’s live a life grateful to God!
  • Let’s live a life that fulfills God’s plans and purposes for our lives!
  • Let’s thank God as He fulfills His plans and purposes in our lives! Every step of the way! With every victory! With every challenge!
  • Let’s accept His generosity!
  • Let’s focus on what is important to God!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • What happens in our hearts when we demand worldly prosperity?
  • What are some adjustments you need to make to refocus your heart on true prosperity?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“As your positive confessions come forth, you will discover that the more blessings you thank God for, the more blessings you will have to thank God for.”

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

So where are you at today? Are you wanting and needing to have your heart filled up and cleaned up? Could today be your day to invite Jesus in to provide you with a fountain that never runs dry of love that will fill your heart to overflowing? Words have power and so we need to use them wisely!

Do you realize that words have power? Do you realize that this means we need to choose our words wisely? Do you realize that this means we need to think before we speak? Do you realize that this means we need to make every word count?

Words have the power to build up and words have the power to tear down! Words have the power to create and words have the power to destroy! Words can be wholesome and promote the health and well-being of the mind or spirit. Words can be unwholesome and be detrimental to someone’s physical, mental, or moral well-being. Words can be positive and negative! Words can create barriers or openings. Words can be constructive or destructive. Words can be constructive and encouraging or destructive and cause despair. Words have power!

God used words to create everything! Ever noticed how words can destroy your spirit? stir up violence? stir up hatred? Ever noticed the warnings we get through God’s Word about the use of words? Examples like:

  • ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.’ — Proverbs 18:21

When the words you use come out of your mouth do you realize what it is saying about the state of your heart?

  • ‘A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.’ — Luke 6:45

So what is the content of your heart? Is it love or hate? Is it bitterness or blessings? Is it compliments or complaints? Is it love or lust? Is it victory or defeat? Take a moment to listen to the self-talk going on in your head. Take a moment to reflect on the words that have come out of your mouth. Are you using words as a weapon for good or for evil? Are you using words as a tool for good or for evil?

If you had to give an account for the words you have used, how would that go? Would your words be used against you? Would your words convict you? Why not check your heart so that you can correct your path by allowing what flows out of your heart to be for good?

Ever considered what fruit the words you use produce or what the words you use say about the type of seeds are in your heart? Let’s reflect on what Matthew 12 has to say about it:

‘“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”’

Matthew 12:33-37

Ever heard about the value of keeping quiet? Yes, there might be an uncomfortable silence but do you want to inject words to fill the gap or to add value? If you don’t have something nice to say then don’t say anything at all. Are you ready to give an account for the words you decide to add to that uncomfortable silence? Are you speaking truth? Are you speaking love? Are you speaking life? Is it worth it?

Remember what was said in Ephesians 4 about words?

‘Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. ‘

Ephesians 4:29

in the AMP version, it says:

‘Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak]. ‘

Ephesians 4:29 (AMP)

Paul speaking to the Ephesians speaks about never allowing unwholesome, foul, profane, worthly, vulgar words come out of your mouth. So let’s consider this as we look to go out today! Instead, let’s take those words and thoughts and turn them around and instead use words to help build up others that are good for blessing, encouraging and motivating them.

Words have power and there are many references available to show this fact. You can find them in both religious and non-religious areas. Be it through the Bible or psychology. So the decision is yours! How will you choose your words and how will you use your words today? Remember what it says about the state of your heart! Remember that you will one day have to give an account for it! So choose your words wisely!

Never Take God Lightly

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.’

Exodus 20:7

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Does God matter to you?
  • Do the words you use reflect that God matters to you or that He doesn’t?
  • What do the words you use say about your attitude?
  • Do the words you use speak respect for God?
  • Do you ever use God’s name profanely?
  • Let’s check out this verse in the Amplified version:
    • ‘“You shall not take the name of the L ord your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the L ord will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power]. ‘ — Exodus 20:7
  • So it goes beyond just profanity but if we use His name irrevently that is a problem too.
  • If we use His name in false affirmations that is a problem too.
  • If we use His name in ways that impugn His character that is a problem too.
  • If we use His name in ways that disregard who He is that is a problem too.
  • If we use His name in ways that disregard the power of His name that is a problem.
  • Ever used the phrase “Oh my God!”?
  • Do you think about it when you say it or is it a reflex?
  • Are you disconnecting God’s name from the reality of who He is?
  • Are you disconnecting God’s name from His character?
  • Ever considered the names of God? I know I actually purchased Christmas ornaments with the names of God as a reminder.
  • Let’s consider the strong names of God found in the Bible:
    • ElohimThe plural form of EL, meaning “strong one.” It is used of false gods, but when used of the true God, it is a plural of majesty and intimates the trinity. It is especially used of God’s sovereignty, creative work, mighty work for Israel and in relation to His sovereignty (Isa. 54:5Jer. 32:27Gen. 1:1Isa. 45:18Deut. 5:23; 8:15Ps. 68:7).
    • El Shaddai:“God Almighty.” The derivation is uncertain. Some think it stresses God’s loving supply and comfort; others His power as the Almighty one standing on a mountain and who corrects and chastens (Gen. 17:1; 28:3; 35:11Ex. 6:1Ps. 91:1, 2).
    • El Elyon:“The Most High God.” Stresses God’s strength, sovereignty, and supremacy (Gen. 14:19Ps. 9:2Dan. 7:18, 22, 25).
    • El Olam:“The Everlasting God.” Emphasizes God’s unchangeableness and is connected with His inexhaustibleness (Gen. 16:13).
    • Yahweh (YHWH): Comes from a verb which means “to exist, be.” This, plus its usage, shows that this name stresses God as the independent and self-existent God of revelation and redemption (Gen. 4:3Ex. 6:3 (cf. 3:14); 3:12).
    • Yahweh Jireh (Yireh):“The Lord will provide.” Stresses God’s provision for His people (Gen. 22:14).
    • Yahweh Nissi:“The Lord is my Banner.” Stresses that God is our rallying point and our means of victory; the one who fights for His people (Ex. 17:15).
    • Yahweh Shalom:“The Lord is Peace.” Points to the Lord as the means of our peace and rest (Jud. 6:24).
    • Yahweh Sabbaoth:“The Lord of Hosts.” A military figure portraying the Lord as the commander of the armies of heaven (1 Sam. 1:3; 17:45).
    • Yahweh Maccaddeshcem: “The Lord your Sanctifier.” Portrays the Lord as our means of sanctification or as the one who sets believers apart for His purposes (Ex. 31:13).
    • YahwehRo’i: “The Lord my Shepherd.” Portrays the Lord as the Shepherd who cares for His people as a shepherd cares for the sheep of his pasture (Ps. 23:1).
    • Yahweh Tsidkenu: “The Lord our Righteousness.” Portrays the Lord as the means of our righteousness (Jer. 23:6).
    • Yahweh Shammah: “The Lord is there.” Portrays the Lord’s personal presence in the millennial kingdom (Ezek. 48:35).
    • Yahweh Elohim Israel:“The Lord, the God of Israel.” Identifies Yahweh as the God of Israel in contrast to the false gods of the nations (Jud. 5:3.; Isa. 17:6).
    • Adonai: Like Elohim, this too is a plural of majesty. The singular form means “master, owner.” Stresses man’s relationship to God as his master, authority, and provider (Gen. 18:2; 40:11 Sam. 1:15Ex. 21:1-6Josh. 5:14).
    • TheosGreek word translated “God.” Primary name for God used in the New Testament. Its use teaches: (1) He is the only true God (Matt. 23:9Rom. 3:30); (2) He is unique (1 Tim. 1:17John 17:3Rev. 15:4; 16:7); (3) He is transcendent (Acts 17:24Heb. 3:4Rev. 10:6); (4) He is the Savior (John 3:161 Tim. 1:1; 2:3; 4:10). This name is used of Christ as God in John 1:1, 18; 20:281 John 5:20Tit. 2:13Rom. 9:5Heb. 1:82 Pet. 1:1.
    • Kurios: Greek word translated “Lord.” Stresses authority and supremacy. While it can mean sir (John 4:11), owner (Luke 19:33), master (Col. 3:22), or even refer to idols (1 Cor. 8:5) or husbands (1 Pet. 3:6), it is used mostly as the equivalent of Yahweh of the Old Testament. It too is used of Jesus Christ meaning (1) Rabbi or Sir (Matt. 8:6); (2) God or Deity (John 20:28Acts 2:36Rom. 10:9Phil. 2:11).
    • DespotesGreek word translated “Master.” Carries the idea of ownership while kurios stressed supreme authority (Luke 2:29Acts 4:24Rev. 6:102 Pet. 2:1Jude 4).
    • Father:A distinctive New Testament revelation is that through faith in Christ, God becomes our personal Father. Father is used of God in the Old Testament only 15 times while it is used of God 245 times in the New Testament. As a name of God, it stresses God’s loving care, provision, discipline, and the way we are to address God in prayer (Matt. 7:11Jam. 1:17Heb. 12:5-11John 15:16; 16:23Eph. 2:18; 3:151 Thess. 3:11).
    • JEHOVAH – JIREH: THE LORD WHO PROVIDES GENESIS 22
    • JEHOVAH – RAPHA: THE LORD WHO HEALS EXODUS 15:22-26
    • JEHOVAH – NISSI: THE LORD OUR BANNER EXODUS 17:8-15
  • Ever seen the fish symbol and considered what that is saying or meaning?
  • Shouldn’t your service and your integrity speak to your relationship with Jesus rather than a marketing symbol?
  • Let’s live our lives to point people to God!
  • Let’s not use God for our own selfish gain!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • How do you think God feels when we use His name flippantly, as an exclamation, or as a marketing device?
  • What are some specific ways you can respect God’s name more?

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“Sow an act and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny.”

― Charles Reade

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

So where are you today? What actions are you taking? What habits are you forming? What character is being set in action? What destiny is it positioning you for? What are the words you are using saying about it? Wat are the words you are using saying about the condition of your heart? Are you in need of a heart adjustment? Why not invite Jesus into your heart? Why not allow Him to help clean things up in there so that wholesome words come from the overflow? Why not get started today? Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.
and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of
Heaven. Father, I believe that Jesus rose
from the dead and I ask you right now to
come in to my life and be my personal
Lord and Savior. I repent of my Sins and
will Worship you all the day's of my Life!
Because your word is truth, I confess with
my mouth that I am Born Again and
Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus
Name, Amen

Did you pray with me?
Would you be willing to leave me a comment so that I can pray with and for you about such an incredible decision?

Or if you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment on my blog, why not email or text me instead?

How are you choosing to live?

Are you trying to find your own way? Are you trying to make your own way? Are you trying to go your own way? Are you trying get your own way?

Are you submitting your life over to God and allowing Him to lead you and guide you, directing your path? Are you walking through life with God or are you trying to escape Him? Are you walking through life with God or have you turned your back and walked away? Are you pursuing God or avoiding Him?

When things get tough, where will you turn? When things get rough, how will you respond? When things aren’t clear, who can you turn to?

If we remember what Jesus taught us about this life, we will face troubles, so if we haven’t just gone through troubles and we aren’t going through troubles then there is probably going to be some troubles ahead, but Jesus didn’t just stop with the warning, He also provided us with hope in the troubles so that we can take heart because He has overcome the world!

How would you respond if you received a message that doom was coming? How would you respond if you received a message that trouble was coming? How would you respond if you received a message that disaster was coming? How would you respond if you received a message that the cycle time has come up? Ever noticed through history the cycle of people turning to God and then over time as they feel too comfortable they stray or walk away?

So we need to stick with God! We need to have Jesus in our lives! We need to make time and take time to hear from the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us as we go through this thing called life.

How are you choosing to live? What would it take for you to change or adjust or realign your life to God’s will?

In God’s Right Hand

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’’

Isaiah 41:10

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever face a confusing or perplexing situation or circumstance?
  • Ever face a puzzling or inexplicable situation or circumstance?
  • Ever face a mysterious or surprising situation or circumstance?
  • Ever face an amazing or astonishing situation or circumstance?
  • How did you respond?
  • Where did you turn?
  • Ever gotten to the end of your rope and said “I just don’t know what to do?”?
  • So what did you do? Did you turn to God? Did you lean in on Him rather than your own understanding? Did you seek God’s Wisdom through His Word? Did you keep doing what you knew to do until you figured it out?
    • I know for me in 2020 I had to do that a lot. I had to lean on God as I didn’t understand. I had to seek Him to help me keep going and doing what He wanted me to do. I forgave. I pressed forward. I trusted God. Hindsight definitely was 2020. There were so many things that were shaking my world. There was isolation from people and yet more time with my wife and kids. There was more time to spend in couple devotionals with my wife. COVID wasn’t as big of a deal in terms of what it caused because it caused my family to draw closer to God and closer to each other. But it was the non-COVID stuff that kept me unsure of what to do. But God was faithful and He showed up. He helped me to be able to look back and see what happened and why it was required. Without God I am not sure what I would have or could have done. With God all things are possible!
  • So what will you do? Will you turn to people for help or go straight to the top? Will you go to God?
    • To close out 2020 I had a choice between 2 roles and I liked both managers and felt I would like and could do both roles. So I gave it up into God’s hands and started at the top with the President of our division and after his response to our Senior VP and after his response the person who was my boss. God opened the door so wide, it was clear which role I was to take. Once I let the hiring manager know God took over and within 2 business days things were in place, and I was in my new role. God is good. God can move mountains that we couldn’t if we tried. My faith in God got me through 2020 and it allowed 2020 to close on a positive note.
  • So go to God first! He knows the beginning and the end! Why go through the contact lists when you can go straight to God?
  • Through Jesus we can go to God first! We don’t need to go through a phone tree of options, go straight to God. We don’t need to send or wait for an email to come in, go straight to God. We don’t need to wait for a repair man or a technician to come and fix our problems, God is personal and shows up in person to get it done!
  • Remember the contract God made with Moses?
    • I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. — Exodus 6:7
    • “’So you will be my people, and I will be your God.’” — Jeremiah 30:22
    • I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. — Leviticus 26:12
    • but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. — Jeremiah 7:23
  • This applies to us too!
  • Let’s take hold of God’s promises!
  • Let’s take hold of today’s verse!
  • Let’s choose to be a part of His family by accepting Jesus!
  • Let’s be adopted into the family of God!
  • Let’s be transformed by the decision to invite Jesus into our lives!
  • And then let’s live out the promise that God Himself is committed to strengthen, lead, support, and uphold us!
  • Let’s allow God to stick close to us and live out our lives in intimate relationship with Him!
  • Let’s decide to live securely in His right hand!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • Since God is invisible, what does this promise really mean?
  • What are some recent or current situations in your life in which you need God’s personal help? Ask Him for it now.

Chained in bitterness or Freed by forgiveness? The choice is yours!

Over the years you have seen many posts come out around forgiveness and the stories of how I first learned to forgive vs those where I chose to start with forgiveness and bypass the pain and suffering that comes with bitterness. Bitterness sometimes is spoken of as a root, a root that if we allow it to grow in our hearts can have devastating effects on your life, physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Bitterness can become a chain that holds you back from all that would have, should have, and could have been. Bitterness robs you of the freedom to have joy and can cause a downward spiral towards rock bottom. Bitterness can start with or even grow into things like anger, disappointment, and resentment and even if it goes too far depression. Bitterness is like taking poison and thinking it is going to kill or impact the life of someone else. Bitterness causes you to become resentful. Bitterness causes you to become disgruntled and discontent. Bitterness causes you to become spiteful. Bitterness will cause grudges. And the more things happen or the more you allow the bitterness to grow, the strong the chain gets and the greater the root impacts your heart and mind. Don’t allow bitterness to fester! Don’t allow it to take root and cause trouble to spring up.

But that isn’t how it is supposed to be. We are faced with a choice and have the freewill to choose for ourselves how we will respond. Forgiveness is more for you than it is for the other person. Forgiveness breaks the chains of bitterness. Forgiveness uproots the root of bitterness. Forgiveness provides freedom. Freedom provides for God’s peace that surpasses all understanding to have a place to live. Forgiveness provides the transforming power of God’s holiness to enter into the situation. Forgiveness strengthens us to the reality of the grace of God, that’s right the free and unmerited favor of God. Forgiveness enlightens us to the reality of the mercy of God, that’s right the leniency, the compassion, the kindness, and the generosity of God. Forgiveness is the key to true freedom! Do you realize the power of forgiveness? It’s not all about you, but you can step up and make a difference! Pray for the forgiveness of your nation! The power of forgiveness in reconciliation. Is forgiveness your habit? Seek forgiveness and wisdom. Forgiveness is hard to do. Imagine if you had to forgive everyone, no matter what they had done! Anger: Deal with it in a way that builds up relationships. Don’t let it build up. Don’t let it fester. Don’t let it take a grip on you and change your view of the world. Don’t let it build up bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness. Forgiveness is the key! God is required! So don’t try to go it alone! Allow God to join in with you to overcome the lies, the deception, the hurt, the pain, the suffering, the abuse so that you don’t have to carry the weight of it all on your own. Cast it upon the Lord because He cares for you!

As I have discovered the choices is yours. We each have to make the decision on our own. Nobody else can make it for us. Others can suggest and recommend that we forgive but it is up to us to decide if we will do it or come up with excuses and reason why we can’t, won’t, and don’t. We each have the freewill to make the decision on how we will respond. Where are you at today? How will you decide to respond?

Roots of Bitterness

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. ‘

Hebrews 12:14-16

Additional context, let’s add one more verse and use the Amplified translation:

‘ Continually pursue peace with everyone, and the sanctification without which no one will [ever] see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of God’s grace; that no root of resentment springs up and causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; and [see to it] that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. For you know that later on, when he wanted [to regain title to] his inheritance of the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no opportunity for repentance [there was no way to repair what he had done, no chance to recall the choice he had made], even though he sought for it with [bitter] tears. ‘

Hebrews 12:14-17

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Ever considered how roots can be taken care of? You dig them up. You dry them up. You grind them up. You mix it with oil to make dyes.
  • Ever tried to dye something and discovered what a terrible stain it can make?
  • Do you realize that bitterness is like a misused dye?
  • Do you realize how bitterness colors your life and your attitude?
  • Do you realize how bitterness impacts how we see life?
  • Do you realize how bitterness impacts how we treat others?
  • Today’s verse directs us to pursue peace with everyone. (that’s right EVERYONE)
  • Today’s verse directs us to pursue peace with every relationship.
  • Today’s verse directs us to pursue peace in order to avoid getting stuck with a root of bitterness.
  • Today’s verse directs us to pursue peace in order that we don’t need to deal with the troubles that come from a root of bitterness.
  • Ever noticed how when you are bitter you can justify it?
  • Ever noticed how when you are bitter you can justify the feelings and actions you take?
  • Ever noticed how when you are bitter that your perspective is stained or tainted in a way that you know you are right?
  • I know with me I kept saying to God how He knew what they had done to me and as such I shouldn’t forgive them.
  • They lied to me! They deceived me! They hurt me. They stole from me.
  • He knew that and yet was telling me to forgive them, because He knew the impact of letting bitterness take root.
  • Ever noticed the feeling of being a victim?
  • Remember how in this world we will have troubles? Remember how Jesus told us to take heart because He has overcome the world? So we need to be people who by faith hear Him and respond according to His plans, purposes, and will.
  • So let’s not allow the hurts and anger of this world to fester and become bitterness!
  • So let’s not allow the hurts and anger of this world to fester and wreck, ruin, and destroy every aspect of our lives!
  • Let’s avoid allowing bitterness into the situation because it has the multiplying effect of harming those around us too.
  • If we remember how bitterness is like a dye and how when a dye gets onto a fabric it will permeate every thread, let’s not allow bitterness to take root and start to permeate every thread of our lives.
  • Don’t allow bitterness to rob you of peace and cause you to be someone who is out looking for a fight!
  • Don’t allow bitterness to cause you to be seeking disagreements.
  • Let’s be ready to respond to God’s prompting to stop the process of becoming bitter before it can take root.
  • Let’s pursue peace with everyone.
  • Let’s decide in advance how we will respond if/when someone hurts us and that it will be to start with forgiveness rather than giving space for bitterness to take root!
  • Let’s forgive them quickly so that there isn’t time for the lies of the devil to put thoughts into our head, creating bitterness, and allowing it to take root in our lives.
  • Don’t allow the joy of the Lord to get robbed by the behavior and actions of others!
  • Don’t allow your energy to get zapped by the behavior and actions of others!
  • Let’s decide in advance that we want to live out our lives in a way that will bring Jesus the praise, the honor, and the glory He deserves!
  • Let’s decide to live our lives in a way that will point others to Jesus!
  • Bitterness is serious! It is like a position or a cancer and we can’t tolerate it!
  • We can’t allow bitterness in because it is trying to kill us!
  • We can’t allow bitterness in because it is contagious!
  • We don’t want or need a pandemic of bitterness!
  • And like I said in my story earlier, bitterness is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die, it doesn’t work!

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • What does it mean to pursue peace with someone you disagree with?
  • How can you overcome bitterness?

Beware the company you keep!

It is interesting how checking out the data about the posts over the years, which articles seem to get the most traffic or attention. The one that seems to get the most is titled Ever heard birds of a feather flock together? Be careful who you are hanging out with because you may become like them–so choose the circle of influence around you wisely. It doesn’t get the most traffic every day but has seemed to be the most popular post in my WordPress blogging years. Some additionally highly visited posts include Be careful the company you keep! and Are you chasing after the wind while trying to find meaning in life? Security and self-worth are not found in these accomplishments, but in the love of God. It is interesting to me what posts seem to resonate with people and which don’t. It is interesting to me what days get higher traffic than others and which don’t. It is interesting to me how over the decades of posting my morning devotional time like God called me to back in 2005, the lives of other people have been touched, online and in my offline worlds. When people at work are amazed at how my posts relate to what is going on in the office and then become more amazed when I share that I didn’t pick the readings but rather just picked the plan and the plan picks the daily readings. God knows before it ever happens and He is willing to share the wisdom and instructions and directions through His Word when we are willing to make the time and take the time to hear it and process it and follow it. Which is interesting as some other high traffic posts include the topic of obedience like Partial obedience is disobedience!, Partial obedience is still disobedience. and It’s time to choose…partial obedience is disobedience! We are all faced with the need to make decisions. We are all faced with making choices. The reality is that some of them may seem minor but may have larger implications and impact. The reality is that some of them may seem small but over time they snowball into something much larger. Say something like your word, Will you stand by your word? Does your word mean something? Words have power to build up or tear down so choose what you say wisely. or even your integrity in cases like Are you punctual, responsible, honest, and hardworking? Do you understand and do what your employer needs from you to make their job easier?. What is drawing you to heard a message from God today? What is it that is keeping you from hearing a message from God today? Could it be the company you are keeping? Could it be the things you are chasing after? Could it be a matter of submission and obedience? Are you able to control yourself? Ever noticed how things link back to the past? Don’t lose hope because of your past or what is going on in your present! Take hold of God’s truth like God is able to bring good out of any bad situation. How will you bring glory to God during trials? and Nothing is too big for God!, Nothing is too big. Bring it to God and let Him show you the way!, God can turn that frown upside down. Nothing is too big for God., and Nothing is impossible with God!. So don’t be robbed by the lies and deception of the devil but rather, put your hope and trust in God! Invite God into your life! Invite Jesus into your heart! Allow the Holy Spirit to be your comforter and your guide! And be transformed today to live out the rest of your life, here on earth and into eternity with God! Turn back now. Don’t wait till you hit bottom to turn back. Start the upward spiral sooner rather than later. Have you drifted away? Turn back now, while you can, before it is too late. It’s a matter of the heart! Do you acknowledge what happened and will you turn back to God? Are you in it for now or for the long run? We all get to make our own decision! We all get to decide which of the final destinations we want to arrive at. Who will you decide to walk with? Realize that it matters! God’s timing is perfect! God’s Timing is perfect… God’s timing is perfect! Do you realize when the timing is right?

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my

Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.
and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of

Because your word is truth, I confess with

Are you ready for Jesus’ return?

Are you ready for your Lord and Savior to return? Are you ready to meet your Lord and Savior face to face?

Are you resisting the gift of grace through Jesus? Are you rejecting Him as your Lord and Savior?

When Jesus returns, will you be in a position to receive Him with joy and excitement? When Jesus returns, will you be in a position to receive Him with fear and trembling?

Are you kneeling before the throne of grace or mercy seat? Are you kneeling before the judgment seat? Take notice kneeling is common, but the heart of the matter will be very different!

We are all faced with making a choice and that decision will determine our final destination!

Will you face the judgment seat that will be cleansing sin? Will you face the mercy seat that will determine rewards?

Are you too proud to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior, to acknowledge and confess your sins and about to face the judgment seat?

Are you humble enough to confess your sins and submit them to Jesus and choose Him to be your Lord and Savior positioning yourself for the mercy seat?

We will all have to give an account for ourselves. Jesus is the way to salvation. The final destination will be based upon our decision to receive, accept, and follow Jesus or not.

So are you ready for Jesus’ return? Every year since I have started my blog, when I get to the Book of Revelation, it feels like the time is getting closer and closer. So let’s be ready! Let’s be prepared! Let’s not be caught by surprise.

The Name of the Lord

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord !’ ”’

Matthew 23:39

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Could you have been a witness and still turned away?
  • Could you have been a witness to the truth and the debates and still forgotten?
  • Could you have been a witness to the miracles and still missed the point?
  • Jesus came the first time to save people! John 3 tells us: ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”’ John 3:16-21
  • Jesus carried the weight of the rejection, the stubbornness, and the hard hearts of the people which caused Him to sweat drops of blood. Looking up such a think we see how hematidrosis seems to be caused by extreme distress or fear, such as facing death, torture, or severe ongoing abuse.
  • Jesus cried out in sadness that people would or could miss out on knowing and following Him.
  • Jesus promised that He would come back.
  • As we read in John 3 above, He first came with a warm heart and message of grace.
  • We he returns, He will come as the powerful and avenging Judge!
  • In Matthew 21:9 – we read about the triumphant entry:
    • ‘Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord !’ Hosanna in the highest!”’
  • Are you ready for the day when Jesus will rule the earth?
  • We get to choose if we will acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior now and get to celebrate Him upon His return.
  • We get to choose if we will reject Him as our Lord and Savior and get to deal with the judgment when He returns.
  • What choice have you or will you make?
  • What choice have your friends and family made?

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • How do you think Jesus felt when people rejected Him and His message that last week?
  • Are you celebrating Him as Savior, or are you waiting for Him as the Judge? Explain your answer.

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“Who can deny that Jesus of Nazareth, the incarnate Son of the Most High God, is the Eternal Glory of the Jewish race?”

Benjamin Disraeli

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

Or if you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment on my blog, why not email or text me instead?

Being eternal means after this life there is another.

We are all flesh and spirit. It is our decisions in the flesh that will make the difference to where we end up after this life on earth. Given the choice of eternity with God or apart from God what would you choose? Given the choice of eternity in Heaven or in Hell what would you choose?

So how will you choose to live this life on earth? Will you choose to make a decision that will bring you closer to God or further from God? Will you choose to make a decision that will bar you from Heaven or welcome you in with open arms?

We have all been created with freewill and as such we all get to choose for ourselves.

Would you consider choosing to invite Jesus into your heart today in order to open the door to eternity with God in Heaven? Some call it being saved and some may wonder what we are being saved from, to me it is saved from finding out in eternity that you are apart from God and having to spend eternity in Hell. Does it mean life will be easier? No, Jesus tells us that in this world we will have troubles and continues with a message of hope that we can take heart because He has overcome the world! Does it mean life will be trouble or trial free? No, we read in James how thanks to Jesus we can consider it pure joy when we face trials of many kinds because we know that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

The Amplified translation of James 1:2-4 puts it this way:

‘Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing. ‘

James 1:2-4

So God is the God of the living, so how will you choose to live your life on earth and into eternity? The final destination is up to you, it’s a choice, a choice that you get to freely make. Choose wisely!

God of the Living

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

‘But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’ ? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” ‘

Matthew 22:31-32

POINTS FROM THE DEVOTIONAL:
  • Are you fascinated with death?
  • Are you curious about life after death?
  • Are you curious about what happens after your last breath on this earth?
  • Do you know if it is the end or not?
  • Are you wondering if there is more after this life?
  • Through Jesus, we are promised resurrection and life!
  • Jesus has told us that believers who have died on this earth are alive right now!
  • Jesus showed the power of the resurrection when He rose from the dead after paying the ultimate sacrifice on the cross so that we could be forgiven and the power of sin and death could be defeated!
  • Death isn’t the end! Life conquers the grave through Jesus Christ!
  • God reigns over the living! He reigns over the living on earth and in the life to come!
  • Will you take hold of the promise?
  • Will you walk in confidence because of the promise of Jesus?
  • Will you live out this life with hope thanks to your faith in Jesus?
  • Will you be ready when that day comes and your spirit leaves your body here on earth?
  • Will your spirit enter into the presence of God? the angels? the believers who have gone before us?
  • Are you ready to be more alive than ever?

DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:
  • Why is it important to you that God is the God of the living and not of the dead?
    • This world isn’t the finish or the end when we have Jesus as our Lord and Savior!
    • There is a better destination yet to come!
  • What do you look forward to in the next life?
    • No more sorrow and no more pain
    • Getting to live the rest of eternity filled with joy and getting to worship God face to face.

QUOTE(S) FROM TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

“The resurrection is not merely important to the historic Christian faith; without it, there would be no Christianity. It is the singular doctrine that elevates Christianity above all other world religions.”

Adrian Rogers
