Are you a nonbeliever? Are you a disbeliever? Are you a skeptic? Are you a doubter? Are you a believer?
What if your life was turned upside and you were stuck with people from across that spectrum? Would anything through a near death experience change you? Would your faith as a believer shine even brighter in that darkness? Would that light of Jesus turn people to you and potentially to God? Would your non belief or disbelief or skepticism change if you saw a believer living out the situation with hope, joy, peace, truth, love impact you or would you become even deeper rooted in your non/disbelief? What if they helped you read through the Bible about God’s great love for you? What they provided an opportunity for people to receive the gift of God of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord? Do you think it would change things?
What if it were something that impacted a loved one, would that make a difference?
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
14 When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them. 15 When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.
16 “What is all this arguing about?” Jesus asked.
17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”
19 Jesus said to them, “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father.
He replied, “Since he was a little boy. 22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”
23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
24 The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”
26 Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?”
29 Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.”
–from Mark 9
What if it were a life or death situation, would that make a difference? Would you want to be one of the ones cast away before of your unbelief?
Jesus Heals in Response to Faith
40 On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. 42 His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying.
As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds. 43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure. 44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.” 47 When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed. 48 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking to her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. He told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
50 But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.”
51 When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother. 52 The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, “Stop the weeping! She isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”
53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died.54 Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, “My child, get up!” 55 And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were overwhelmed, but Jesus insisted that they not tell anyone what had happened.
–from Luke 8
Would you care enough for someone else that you would seek the truth and not just ignore it? What would it take for you to get to the end of your rope before you turned back or turn to God? Would you really have to hit rock bottom before you would consider looking up to God? Do you really think you can do it on your own or in your own power? Do you really think that it is your way or the highway? Do you realize that there is a way? Do you realize there is a way that will allow you to power through the troubles and trials so that you can take heart and even consider it pure joy through them?
Are you a believer? Are you preparing daily so that if and when God needs you that you are able to stand firm on the truth and speak the truth in love, speak life, speak hope into the world around you?
Are you a non/disbeliever/seeker who when they run into trouble have someone to turn to or reach out to?
Do you know your surroundings? Do you know your situation? Are you prepared?
Do you realize you aren’t alone? Do you realize that Jesus isn’t out there somewhere? Do you realize He is God with us? Do you realize that He is wanting to start and develop and grow an intimate relationship with you so that you can walk through life together? So don’t try to go through it alone! Lean not on your own understanding! Put your trust in God!
Do you realize when 2 or more come together in His name, He is there like the cord of 3 strands that isn’t easily broken?
Let’s allow the Holy Spirit to be in the situation! Let’s seek the truth! Let’s seek wisdom! Let’s seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness!
So let’s make sure to give Jesus the praise, the honor, and the glory! It is by His strength and His power that we are saved! It is by His strength and His power that lives can be transformed! It is by His strength and His power that there will be a way even when there doesn’t seem to be a way! He is the way, the truth, and the life! He is our way to get to the Father in heaven!
Let’s take a moment to read the Lord’s Prayer and capture the pattern for prayer…
9Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
10May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
11Give us today the food we need,
12and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13And don’t let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.
So believers, let’s lift up the flag of Jesus by being living sacrifices through the way we live in the very places God has brought us to work and live. Let’s be prepared for when that person comes to you with questions or problems or issues and needs you to be God’s arms and hands extended! Let’s be light that shines through the darkness! Let’s be salt that spices up the situation! Let’s be salt and light that helps bring purity into the situation! Let’s go out today prepared to do the good works that God is preparing in advance to do!
