Ever had people try to explain what is going on to you?


The Story of Job. – Day 25

Ever been in a situation where you are wondering what just happened? Or how did I get here? Ever had people who say they are your friends try to tell you their thoughts on why or how you got into this situation? Ever had people who say they are your friends try to tell you what you need to do in order to make it better? Ever had people who say they are your friends start to give false accusations for why and how you ended up in that situation? Ever had people who say they are your friends start to give bad advice or reasons for why and how you ended up in that situation?

How will you know what is true? How will you know what is right? How will you know what is helpful? How will you know what is important? How will you know what is necessary? How will you know what to do?

I know from God’s Word that there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors. The key is to know and understand which counsel is good and which counsel you need to ignore? The key is to ask the Holy Spirit to guide your heart and your mind so that you are able to discern. I know that God’s Word never returns void and so I turn to it daily for wisdom and direction. Yesterday after my morning reading and study and post, I headed to my weekly breakfast with a friend, all the way the songs on the radio touched my heart and filled me with joy to overflowing. After a great time together, driving to work more songs that touched my heart played continuing to encourage me and let me know how much God loves me and is with me in and through it all. It enabled an incredible day in the midst of questions and situations and discussions. God is so good! He never leaves me and never abandons me. He sees me right where I am and will help me through it. As my friend shared just because we feel like we are in a dark cave, it isn’t that we have to come out to encounter Jesus, Jesus is in there with us and will help us get out. In the midst of the storm, God will allow His peace that surpasses all understanding to guard our hearts and minds. God is able to cause the storm to stop and bring peace. God is able to cause us to find peace in the midst of the storm. The key is to stick with God in and through it all.

It is by grace that I am saved through faith in my Lord Jesus Christ! His mercies are new every morning so that I will never run out.


Today’s reading comes to us from Job 20:

‘Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said, “Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me answer, Because of the uneasiness that is within me. I have heard the reproof which insults me, But the spirit of my understanding makes me answer. Do you not know this from the old days, Since the time that man was placed on the earth, That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless is only for a moment? Though his pride reaches the heavens And his head touches the clouds, Yet he perishes forever like his own refuse; Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’ He flies away like a dream and cannot be found; Yes, he is chased away like a vision of the night. The eye which saw him sees him no longer, Neither does his [accustomed] place behold him any longer. His sons favor the poor [and pay his obligations], And his hands give back his [ill-gotten] wealth. His bones are full of youthful strength But it lies down with him in the dust. “Though evil and wickedness are sweet in his mouth And he hides it under his tongue, Though he desires it and will not let it go But holds it in his mouth, Yet his food turns [to poison] in his stomach; It is the venom of vipers within him. He swallows [his ill-gotten] riches, But will vomit them up; God will drive them out of his belly. He sucks the poison of vipers [which ill-gotten wealth contains]; The viper’s tongue slays him. He does not look at the rivers, The flowing streams of honey and butter [to enjoy his wealth]. He gives back what he has labored for and attained And cannot swallow it [down to enjoy it]; As to the riches of his labor, He cannot even enjoy them. For he has oppressed and neglected the poor; He has violently taken away houses which he did not build. “Because he knew no quietness or calm within him [because of his greed], He does not retain anything he desires. There is nothing left of what he devoured; Therefore his prosperity does not endure. In the fullness of his excess (great abundance) he will be in trouble; The hand of everyone who suffers will come against him [he is miserable on every side]. When he fills his belly, God will send His fierce anger on him And will rain it upon him while he is eating. He may flee from the iron weapon, But the bow of bronze will pierce him through. The arrow is drawn forth and it comes out of his back [after passing through his body]; Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. Terrors march in upon him; Complete darkness (misfortune) is held in reserve for his treasures. An unfanned fire will devour him; It will consume the survivor in his tent. The heavens will reveal his wickedness and guilt, And the earth will rise up against him. The produce and increase of his house will depart [with the victors]; His possessions will be dragged away in the day of God’s wrath. This is the wicked man’s portion from God, And the heritage decreed and appointed to him by God.”’

Today’s reading brings us back to Zophar who gives his second speech to Job and focused on two main ideas:

  1. How the prosperity of the wicked is short lived
  2. How Job is doomed for sure

Zophar speaks to how “the fate of the wicked” is short time of triumphing. He speaks to how sin might seem pleasurable for a time but it won’t last. We know this too as we consider the words of Hebrew 11:25 which says “because he preferred to endure the hardship of the people of God rather than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.”

We see in today’s study notes:

Verses 1-19: Zophar’s second speech focuses on two key ideas: the prosperity of the wicked is short, and his doom is sure.

“Zophar” describes the fate of the wicked in his second speech: they have their “short” times of “triumphing”. There may be “passing pleasures of sin” (Heb. 11:25), but judgement is coming. Job’s spiritual experience did not line up with Zophar’s rigid expectations, so Job was branded a “wicked man”.

Zophar spoiled it all again for Job with his second and last speech (compare 11:1-20), in which he admonished Job again to consider the fate of the wicked.

Verses 4-8: Contrary to Zophar’s confident assertion, sometimes wicked people live long lives. For example, Noah endured the wickedness of his neighbors for 120 years while he preached and built the Ark (Gen. 6:3), and God gave the Canaanites four centuries before He judged them as a nation.

Verses 5-6: “Wicked … hypocrite … triumphing”: The application of Zophar’s words about this wicked, hypocritical, proud person were aimed at Job. He would, like others so wicked, suffer the consequences of his sins (verses 7-29).

Verses 12-19: These verses represent the heart of Zophar’s perceptions about Job’s life and circumstances. Yet his conclusions were wrong because his perceptions were false, Job was not a “wicked man” (20-29). Regardless of what others perceive, the godly can always stand firm in the truth.

In verses 12-22: Evil in a life takes away all the enjoyment, implying that Job had no joy because of sin, such as that (in verse 19).

Verses 20-29: Eloquent oratory is impressive only if it tells the truth. Zophar’s commitment to the retribution principle led him to presumptuous, insulting and false claims. To see things from the perspective of the hurting; and most importantly, from God’s perspective, is the way to truly encourage them.

In verses 23-29: Zophar concluded that more than just losing the enjoyment of life by sin, the wicked fall under the fury of God determined for such wickedness.

The Story of Job. – Day 20

What is your purpose and your intention for debating or questioning the other person? Is your goal to win or to understand? Is your goal to win or to inform? Is your goal to solve the problem or defeat the person? When faced with a problem, how will you address it? Will you attack the problem or will you attack the person? Will you allow Jesus to be in the center of the relationship and then partner with the other person to address the problem? Will you attack the problem or will you attack the other person?

Do you know what is going on? Do you totally comprehend it? Are you assuming based on your knowledge and just trying to win the debate? Are you finding that your technique isn’t helping you win the argument? Are you realizing that you are now trying to go after the person? Are you a real friend with a real relationship or are you a so-called friend and just trying to indict the other person so that you win?

‘Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered [Job] and said, “Should a wise man [such as you] utter such windy and vain knowledge [as we have just heard] And fill himself with the east wind [of withering, parching, and violent accusations]? Should he rebuke and argue with useless talk? Or with words in which there is no benefit? Indeed, you are doing away with fear, And you are diminishing meditation before God. For your guilt teaches your mouth, And you choose [to speak] the language of the crafty and cunning. Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; Yes, your own lips testify against you. “Were you the first man to be born [the original wise man], Or were you created before the hills? Do you hear the secret counsel of God, And do you limit [the possession of] wisdom to yourself? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not equally clear to us? Among us are both the gray-haired and the aged, Older than your father. Are the consolations of God [as we have interpreted them to you] too trivial for you, [Or] were we too gentle toward you [in our first speech] to be effective? Why does your heart carry you away [allowing you to be controlled by emotion]? And why do your eyes flash [in anger or contempt], That you should turn your spirit against God And let such words [as you have spoken] go out of your mouth? What is man, that he should be pure and clean, Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous and just? Behold, God puts no trust in His holy ones (angels); Indeed, the heavens are not pure in His sight— How much less [pure and clean is] the one who is repulsive and corrupt, Man, who drinks unrighteousness and injustice like water! “I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare; What wise men have [freely] told, And have not hidden [anything passed on to them] from their fathers, To whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them [corrupting the truth]. The wicked man writhes with pain all his days, And numbered are the years stored up for him, the ruthless one. A [dreadful] sound of terrors is in his ears; While at peace and in a time of prosperity the destroyer comes upon him [the tent of the robber is not at peace]. He does not believe that he will return out of the darkness [for fear of being murdered], And he is destined for the sword [of God’s vengeance]. He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness and destruction is already at hand. Distress and anxiety terrify him, They overpower him like a king ready for battle. Because he has stretched out his hand against God And behaves arrogantly against the Almighty, Running and charging headlong against Him With his ornamented and massive shield; For he has covered his face with his fat, Adding layers of fat to his thighs [giving himself up to pleasures], And he has lived in desolate [God-forsaken] cities, In houses which no one should inhabit, Which were destined to become heaps [of ruins]; He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not bend to the earth nor his possessions be extended on the earth. He will not escape from darkness [fleeing disaster]; The flame [of God’s wrath] will wither his branch, And by the blast of His mouth he will go away. Let him not trust in vanity (emptiness, futility) and be led astray; For emptiness will be his reward [for such living]. It will be fulfilled while he still lives, And his branch will not be green [but shall wither away]. He will fail to bring his grapes to maturity [leaving them to wither unnourished] on the vine, And will cast off blossoms [and fail to bring forth fruit] like the olive tree. For the company of the godless is barren, And fire consumes the tents of bribery (wrong and injustice). They conceive mischief and bring forth wickedness, And their inmost soul prepares deceit and fraud.”’

After Job’s latest speech, it has intensified the rebuttal of his friends. Their confrontation was energized by what Job had to say.

Today’s reading begins with Eliphaz, who was the first friend who tried to comfort him, the first to dispute with him and the oldest of them. The discussion or debate has escalated and become much more heated.

We see more questions being raised during this conversation and learn thru the study how the book of Job has more questions than any other book in the Bible with over 300 questions. The questions revolve around the subject of wisdom and trying to get understanding.

We read how Eliphaz was now telling Job that his words in vain and would have as little effect on God as the wind. He compares Job’s speech to the east wind which in that part of the world was the worst wind.

Eliphaz says Job’s words are worthless, unprofitable and do no good but instead cause hurt. We see how Eliphaz’s opinion of Job has degraded and felt that Job’s sins were so great that God wouldn’t even be listening to him.

Eliphaz goes on to accuse Job with the severity that Job was trying to undermine other people’s devotion to God. Today’s study goes on to say “He forgot that Job had asked God to take away his fear of Him. Job had spoken boldly of his belief that God would save him. Eliphaz believed that Job was not showing reverence toward God. He even believed that Job was hindering other’s prayers to God.

Eliphaz going from trying to argue to now attacking Job when he accuses Job of ““iniquity” and being “crafty” deceitful, whereas in his first speech he seemed to assume Job’s sincerity. Eliphaz believed that Job’s tongue was speaking from a heart filled with iniquity.

Eliphaz even goes on to accuse Job that his own words have condemned him. That there was no need to try and produce any testimony for his own lips had given enough proof of how he was guilty. Today’s study mirrors the accusation with the ones that Jesus received as it says “Now he was saying that the words he was speaking were condemning himself. He believed that Job had been acting in an irreverent way in speaking to God. Job was in very good company being accused of sinning with what he said. They accused Jesus of speaking blasphemy, and therefore worthy of death. How wrong they were, and how wrong Eliphaz was here.“.

Today’s study gives the following additional summary of what was discussed:

Verses 7-13: Eliphaz condemned Job for rejecting the conventional wisdom, as if he had more insight than other men (verses 7-9), and could reject the wisdom of the aged (verse 10), and the kindness of God (verse 11).

Verses 7-10: With God, true knowledge is not necessarily linked to age but to consistent obedience (Psalm 119:99-100). Knowledge and wisdom come from doing what God instructs and discovering that He always knows what is right (Deut. 4:6; 1 Tim. 4:12).

Verses 14-16: A strong statement with regard to the sinfulness of man (Rom. 3:23), that attacked Job’s claim to righteousness. (Verse 15), refers to holy angels who fell and brought impurity into the heavens (Rev. 12:1-4). The truth is accurate, that all men are sinners, but irrelevant in Job’s case, because his suffering was not due to any sin.

Verses 15-20: Retributive justice was not only Eliphaz’s philosophy but that of all three friends. They did not see that while suffering is ultimately the result of original sin not all suffering is the result of a person’s particular sin.

Verses 17-35: Eliphaz once again returned to the same perspective and indicted Job for sin because Job was suffering. To support his relentless point, he launched into a lengthy monologue about the wicked and their outcomes in life, including many parallels to the sufferings of Job. He had pain, and didn’t know when his life would end (verse 20). He suffered from fear, every sound alarmed him, and he thought his destroyer was near (verses 21-22). He worried about having food (verse 23). His suffering made him question God (verses 24-26). Once well-nourished, housed and rich (verses 27-29), he would lose it all (verses 30-33). Eliphaz concluded by calling Job a hypocrite (verses 34-35), saying that this was the reason things were going so badly.

Eliphaz again appeals to his personal experience for authority: “That which I have seen.” He then surveys the judgments that fall on the wicked, thus implying that Job is to be numbered among them.

On Thanksgiving-eve, can you be thankful?


THE STORY OF JOB. – DAY 15

What if you had lost your possessions? What if you had lost your monetary worth? What if you had lost your children? What if you had lost your health? Could you still find a way to be thankful?

What if your friends started to judge you? What if your friends started to accuse you? What if your friends started to attack you? What if your friends started to try and shame you? What if your friends blamed you for something you didn’t do? Could you still find a way to be thankful?

Can you find hope in the midst of troubles? Can you find joy in the midst of trials? Can be thankful FOR THE things God has done in and through you? Can you be thankful EVEN THOUGH things haven’t always been easy? Can you be thankful BECAUSE OF the trials and tests and troubles, knowing that they will all work together for God because of your faith and trust in God?


Today’s reading of Job from God’s Word comes from Job 11:


‘Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said, “Shall a multitude of words not be answered? And should a talkative man [making such a long-winded defense] be acquitted? Should your boasts and babble silence men? And shall you scoff and no one put you to shame? For you have said, ‘My teaching (doctrine) [that God knowingly afflicts the righteous] is pure, And I am innocent in your eyes.’ But oh, that God would speak, And open His lips [to speak] against you, And [that He would] show you the secrets of wisdom! For sound wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God forgets a part of your wickedness and guilt. “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you [by searching] discover the limits of the Almighty [ascend to His heights, extend to His widths, and comprehend His infinite perfection]? His wisdom is as high as the heights of heaven. What can you do? It is deeper than Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead). What can you know? It is longer in measure [and scope] than the earth, And broader than the sea. If God passes by or arrests, Or calls an assembly [of judgment], who can restrain Him? [If He is against a man, who can call Him to account for it?] For He recognizes and knows false and worthless men, And He sees wickedness, will He not consider it? But a hollow (empty-headed) man will become intelligent and wise [Only] when the colt of a wild donkey is born as a man. “If you direct your heart [on the right path] And stretch out your hands to Him, If sin is in your hand, put it far away [from you], And do not let wrongdoing dwell in your tents; Then, indeed, you could lift up your face [to Him] without moral defect, And you would be firmly established and secure and not fear. For you would forget your trouble; You would remember it as waters that have passed by. And your life would be brighter than the noonday; Darkness [then] would be like the morning. Then you would trust [with confidence], because there is hope; You would look around you and rest securely. You would lie down with no one to frighten you, And many would entreat and seek your favor. But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And they will not escape [the justice of God]; And their hope is to breathe their last [and die].”’

We see another one of Job’s friends step in today and look for an audience with God too, but unfortunately Zophah was wanted the audience in order for God to speak to Job’s iniquity and need to repent. We see how another close friend of Job decides to accuse Job that what he has been going through must be in retaliation to something he had done wrong. As with Job’s other friend who spoke, Zophah is trying to get Job to repent without realizing the reality of the situation. Just as the disciples ask Jesus who sinned to make the man blind from birth, Job’s friends are assuming guilt because of the struggles Job has been going through. Zophah gets started with rebuke · reprimand · reproach · admonishment · admonition · reproval · remonstration · disapproval · disapprobation · criticism · censure · blame · condemnation · fault-finding · telling-off · rap over the knuckles · slap on the wrist · dressing down · blast · ticking off · wigging · serve · rating · reprehension and censure · criticism · castigation · stricture · denunciation · damnation · vilification · opprobrium · reproof · disapproval · disapprobation · flak · a bad press · reprobation · arraignment · excoriation · objurgation. We know from the Bible that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. We also know that God convicts us out of love unlike Satan who condemns in order to destroy. Zophah starts out with the assumption that for all this to have happened that Job is guilty. Zophah then goes on to name call Job a talker, a liar, and a mocker. Zophah takes Job’s claim of integrity and twists it by going to the extreme that Job was really saying he was sinless and then Zophah attacked him for it. Zophah wouldn’t stop there, he alleges that not only was Job guilty and unrepentant but also an empty talker, with all that hot air he was spouting off about his innocence and God’s apparent injustice was enough that Zophah would have to speak up and take a stand. Even though Job had earlier acknowledged his sin while maintaining his innocence, Zophah had to respond and retaliate.

As I consider this and ponder this, the words “vengeance is mine says the Lord” come to mind in that we shouldn’t and don’t need to be judging others about things we don’t know and we don’t understand because God won’t be fooled nor mocked and He is able to take care of things himself without our need to judge and accuse. Let’s not fall into the first response being to accuse or assume, let’s make our first response to turn to God for wisdom and discernment how He would choose to use us in the midst of a friends troubles and trials? We need to be considering how when we point at someone there are other fingers pointing back at ourselves and we need to be checking our own lives and hearts and take responsibility and accountability for our own lives. We need to be looking in the mirror and considering what do we need to be doing about our own lives to get more aligned with God’s will and purpose and plan. Receiving Jesus gives us salvation, but God’s plan is that we will have life and life more abundantly and so we need to be move forward from that starting point in alignment with His purpose, plan, and will in order to walk into all the good He has planned for our lives, even in the midst of the trials and troubles.

As we get to verse 5 and following, we learn in today’s study how the words being spoken by Zophah to Job were not helpful but hurtful, they would be helpful if it had been a self-reflection to himself, but in the position Job was in the words brought little to no value.

Verses 5-6: Pastor and scholar Andrew W. Blackwood wrote about this passage, “Such a remark might have considerable value if spoken while looking into the mirror. But from a man who is not suffering, to a man who is suffering, this remark is cruel and utterly without any value at all.”

Job 11:5 “But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;” Plead with thee according to thy desire: he would soon put thee to silence. We are commonly ready, with great assurance, to interest God in our quarrels. But they are not always in the right who are most forward to appeal to his judgment, and prejudge it against their antagonists.

Job 11:6 “And that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom, that [they are] double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee [less] than thine iniquity [deserveth].” “Secrets of wisdom”: Job would have been much wiser if he had only known the unknowable secret of God; in this case the scene in heaven between God and Satan would have clarified everything. But Job couldn’t know the secret wisdom of God (verses 7-9). Zophar should have applied his point to himself. If God’s wisdom was so deep, high, long and broad, how was it that he could understand it and have all the answers? Like his friends, Zophar thought he understood God and reverted to the same law of retaliation, the sowing and reaping principle, to again indict Job. He implied that Job was wicked (verses 10-11), and thought he was wise, thought actually he was out of control as if he were a “wild donkey” (verse 12). As terrible as the attack of Satan had been on Job, Zophar felt that it was not enough for the sins of Job. Zophar wanted God to speak out loud and condemn Job, where they could all hear it. In God is all Wisdom and Truth. Zophar was saying to Job, that he had no wisdom. He thought if Job had been wise, he would have repented of his sins by now.

Job 11:7 “Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?” Literally, can you attain to the searching out of God? Can you suppose, that is, that whatever your wisdom, learning, subtlety, sagacity, power of insight, you will be able to search out and fully know the character, attributes, modes of thought and actions of the Most High? No. In one sense, all men do well to profess themselves “Agnostics”. Not that they can know nothing of God, but that they can never know him fully and never exhaust the knowledge of him. As the apostle says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God”! “how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?” (Rom. 11:33-34). “Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?” Rather. Can you attain to the perfection of the Almighty? Understand, i.e., his inconceivable perfectness. He was asking Job if he thought that he really could know God? He was saying that the wisdom and knowledge of Job would not help him to know God. He was telling Job, that in no way could he measure up to the expectations of the Almighty God. Zophar was a tormenter, not a comforter.

Job 11:8 “[It is] as high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” Literally, the heights of the heavens; what can you do? But the meaning is probably that expressed in the Authorized Version. God’s perfectness is unattainable by man’s thought, as the heights of the heavens are by his feet. Deeper than hell; literally, than Sheol, or the receptacle of the dead (see comment on Job 10:21). Paul speaks of the “deep things,” or rather, “the depths” of God (see 1 Cor. 2:10). “What canst thou know? How small a part of the Divine nature can any man thoroughly comprehend and know!

Job 11:9 “The measure thereof [is] longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.” Length is generally ascribed to the earth, and width to the sea. The ends of the earth are used for a great distance, and the sea is called the great and wide sea (see Psalm 72:1). But God and his perfections, particularly his wisdom and understanding, are infinite (Psalm 147:5). And will admit of no dimensions; as his love, so his wisdom, has a height which cannot be reached, a depth that cannot be fathomed, and a length and breadth immeasurable (see Eph. 3:18). From hence it appears that God is omniscient, omnipresent, and incomprehensible; and since he is to be found in Christ, and in him only, it is in vain for us to seek for him elsewhere. Next the sovereignty of God is spoken of. This was speaking of the perfection of the Almighty filling the earth and the seas. The following Scripture says it best.

Job Chapter 11 Study

Ever had someone throw your words back in your face and use them in the totally opposite way? We see starting in Job 11:10 how Zophah does just that.

Verses 10-12: In his rhetorical question in 9:12, Job had compared his own cries to the braying of a wild donkey (6:5). Here, Zophar echoes his question but draws the opposite conclusion and accuses Job of being foolish and “empty-headed” (Psalms 10:14: 39:5).

Job 11:10 “If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?” Namely, a person or family. “And shut up”: In prison, or in the hands of an enemy, or in the net of affliction and trouble (Psalm 66:11). “Or gather together”: Make our condition straight and narrow, as some interpret it. Or, gather together as tares to the fire, or gather to himself man’s breath and spirit (Job 34:14). “Then who can hinder him? From doing what he pleases with his creatures? Who can either block the sentence, or oppose the execution? Who can control his power or arraign his wisdom and justice? If he, who made all out of nothing, thinks fit to reduce all to nothing; if he that separated between light and darkness, dry land and sea at first, is pleased to gather them together again. If he that made, think proper to unmake, who can turn him; alter his mind, or stay his hand, or impede or impeach his proceedings? The answer of course, was no one, not even Satan. We must keep remembering that God gave Satan permission to do this to Job. This was in no way a punishment on Job for sins. This was a proving to Satan and to the on-looking angels that Job was truly a righteous man, and that nothing Satan could do to him would change that.

Job 11:11 “For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider [it]?” Though men know but little of God, and therefore are very unfit judges of his counsels and actions, yet God knows man exactly. He knows that every man in the world is guilty of much vanity and folly, and therefore sees sufficient reason for his severity against the best men. “He seeth wickedness also”: He perceives the wickedness of evil men, though it be covered with the veil of religion. “Will he not then consider it?” Shall he only see it as an idle spectator, and not observe it as a judge to punish it? The worst of this was that Zophar was accusing Job of being vain in his own conceit. He was saying that Job had been pretending to be a Godly man, but was not faithful to God in his heart.

Job 11:12 “For vain man would be wise, though man be born [like] a wild ass’s colt.” Man, who since the fall is void of all true wisdom, pretends to be wise, and able to pass a censure upon all God’s ways and works. “Born like a wild ass’s colt”: Ignorant, dull, and stupid, as to divine things, and yet heady and untraceable. Such is man by his birth; this evil is now natural and hereditary, and therefore common to all men. Of consequence it is not strange, if Job partake of the common distemper. Zophar believed that the troubles which had come to Job was because he was vain and puffed up with pride. Zophar believed they came on Job to cause him to repent.

With Zophah’s assumption of Job being a sinner, He points to God’s power of forgiveness if Job will be willing to confess his sin and repent. We learn how Zophah seemed to believe God worked on a tit for tat type of a system or that you get something from God because you first gave God something. But the earth is the Lord’s and everything it, there is nothing we can give God that He doesn’t already have.

We know that isn’t how God’s economy works. We know that isn’t how God works. We know that even simply through the example of Jesus who while we were yet sinners, He died for us. God didn’t wait for us to be good enough, clean enough, smart enough, … He knew that the only way to make a way was to take things into His own hands and hence the ultimate sacrifice, once for all, made a way when there didn’t seem to be a way.

We learn as we start in verse 13 how Zophah continues with the message to Job with the conclusion that his sin would lead to his death.

Verses 13-20: Zophar continues to assume that Job is a sinner but reminds him that God will forgive his sin upon his confession and repentance. Zophar asserted that God operates on the basis of “You give Me something, and I will give you something.” But God does not operate this way. His creation has nothing to give Him that is worth any value (Isa. 64:6).

Verses 13-14: Zophar started out this section speaking directly to Job, “If thou prepare …” and concluded speaking proverbially, “But the “eyes of the wicked …”. In so doing Zophar avoided directly calling Job wicked, but succeeded with ever greater force by being indirect. In the end, he told Job that his sin would bring about his death.

Job 11:13 “If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;” Thy business, O Job, is not to quarrel with thy Maker, or his works. But to address thyself to him by prayer and supplication, sincerely repenting of all your hard speeches, and other sins against God, and seeking him with a pure and upright heart; without which your prayers will be in vain. “Stretch out thine hands”: I.e. pray, which is here described by its usual gesture (as Job 15:25; Psalm 88:9). “Towards him”: I.e. to God, as appears both from the nature of the thing, and from the context.

Job 11:14 “If iniquity [be] in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.” If you have in your hand, or possession, any goods gotten by injustice or oppression, as it seems they supposed he had. Or, he means more generally, if you allow yourself in any sinful practices, the hand being put for action, whereof it is the instrument. “Put it far away”: Keep yourself at a great distance, not only from such actions, but also from the very occasions and appearances of them. “Let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles”: That is, in thy habitation, either in thyself or in thy family. Whose sins Job was obliged, as far as he could, to prevent or reform, as it seems he had done (Job 1:5). He said, tabernacles, because anciently the habitations of great men consisted of several tents or tabernacles. He was giving Job advice here. He wanted Job to put his wickedness far from him, so that God would hear his plea for forgiveness.

Job 11:15 “For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear:” With cheerfulness and holy boldness. “Without spot”: Having a clear and unspotted conscience. “Yea, thou shalt be steadfast”: Shall have a strong and comfortable assurance of God’s favor, and shalt be settled, without any fear of losing thy happiness. After Job had driven his iniquity out of his life, then he could look to heaven and to God for help. He reminded Job that if he was steadfast in the LORD, he had nothing to fear.

Job 11:16 “Because thou shalt forget [thy] misery, [and] remember [it] as waters [that] pass away:” Thy happiness shall be so great that it shall blot out the remembrance of thy past miseries. “And remember it as waters that pass away”: Remember it no more than men remember either a land-flood, which, as it comes, so it goes away suddenly and leaves few or no marks or memorials behind it. Or the waters of a river, which pass by in constant succession. Zophar believed that if Job would repent, his troubles would go away and he would remember them no more. It would be gone as the water passes away.

Job 11:17 “And [thine] age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.” Literally, shall arise above the noonday; i.e. “exceed it in splendor.” Instead of the “thick darkness” to which Job is looking forward (Job 10:21-22). He shall bask in a light brighter than that of the sun at noon. “Thou shalt shine forth”: The Hebrew cannot possibly bear this meaning. The uncommon word used is allied with “obscurity”, and if a verb should mean “thou shalt be obscure,” rather than “thou shalt shine forth.” But it is perhaps a substantive, meaning “darkness;” and the translation of the Revised Version is perhaps correct: “Though there be darkness.” “Thou shalt be as the morning”: “Thy light,” as Professor Lee explains, “shall gradually rise and expand itself far and wide.” It shall dispel the darkness, and take its place,” shining more and more unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18). Zophar was saying if Job would do as he had suggested, he would not face the darkness of the grave and hell. He would bask in the Light of the LORD which was greater than the noonday sun. He would be renewed in the LORD.

Job 11:18 “And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig [about thee, and] thou shalt take thy rest in safety.” From coming into like darkness, difficulties, and distress again, and from every evil and enemy. Nothing shall come nigh to disturb and hurt, nothing to be feared from any quarter, all around: or “shalt be confident”. Have a strong faith and full assurance of it, in the love of God, in the living Redeemer, and in the promises which respect the life that now is, and that which is to come. “Because there is hope”: Of the mercy of God, of salvation by Christ, and of eternal glory and happiness, as well as of a continuance of outward prosperity. Faith and hope mutually assist each other. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and hope of better and future things on a good foundation encourages faith and confidence. “Yea, thou shalt dig about thee”: To let in stakes for the pitching and fixing of tents to dwell in, and for more commodious pasturage. Or for wells of water, for the supply both of the family and the flocks. Or rather, for ditches and trenches to secure from thieves and robbers, or for drains to carry off floods of water. “And thou shalt take thy rest in safety”: Lie down on the bed and sleep in the night season in peace and quietness, having nothing to fear. Being well entrenched, and secure from plundering and flooding. And, more especially, being hedged about and protected by the power and providence of God (see Psalm 3:5). The Targum is, “thou shall prepare a grave, and lie down, and sleep secure.” Zophar was saying something that really would happen to Job after he was restored. It was not something that Zophar really wanted for Job however. He said this to remind Job of the wonders of how it used to be. Job’s hope was not in what Zophar had said, or not said, but in the LORD.

Job 11:19 “Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make [thee] afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.” Either lie down on his bed, as before, or by his flocks, and where they lie down, and none should disturb him or them. Not thieves and robbers, such as the Chaldeans and Sabeans had been to him, nor lions, bears, or wolves. “Yea, many shall make suit unto thee”: Make their supplications, present their requests and petitions for relief under necessitous circumstances, or for protection from the injuries and insults of others. As the poor and needy, the widow and fatherless, had done to him in times past, when in his prosperity, and when he was a friend unto them, and the father of them (see Prov. 19:6). Or, “the great ones shall make suit to thee”; to have his favor and friendship, his counsel and advice, his company and conversation. He should be applied unto and courted by men of all sorts, which would be no small honor to him (see Psalm 45:12). When Job was restored, there would be no warring parties from his neighbors. Instead of stealing from Job, they would be bringing things to him. Again, this was not what Zophar wished for Job, but it was what would happen.

Job 11:20 “But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope [shall be as] the giving up of the ghost.” Or be consumed. Either with grief and fears for their sore calamities; or with long looking for what they shall never attain, as this phrase is taken (Psalm 69:3; Jer. 14:6; Lam. 4:17). And this shall be thy condition; O Job, if thou persist in thine impiety. “They shall not escape”: They shall never obtain deliverance out of their distresses, but shall perish in them. “As the giving up of the ghost”: I.e. shall be as vain and desperate as the hope of life is in a man, when he is at the very point of death. Or, as a puff of breath, which is gone in a moment without all hopes of recovery. Zophar was speaking this, as if it was the fate of Job. In reality, he was speaking of himself and what would come to him, because he had spoken evil of Job. He was saying that Job had no other hope, but death. He would be needing the prayers of Job to save himself from the fate he just spoke of Job.

The Story of Job. – Day 12


Ever been accused of wrong you didn’t commit? Ever been accused by someone who doesn’t know the full story? Ever been accused by someone who is judging without understanding? Ever been judged for something that wasn’t even true?

Ever thought you were trying to help by giving advice that was wrong? Ever thought you were trying to help by calling out someone for what is going on? Ever thought you were trying to point someone in the right direction without realizing that they weren’t going in the wrong direction?

How do you know what you should say? How do you know what you should do? How do you know how you should respond? How do you know what you should receive? Will you turn to God? Will you ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance? Will you trust in God or what man has to say? You need to realize you don’t know everything. You need to realize whether you are giving advice or getting advice that neither side may know the reality or the truth of the situation.

Do you realize that even if when you are wrong or you are speaking with the wrong heart, some of the words you speak may be true?


Today’s reading from God’s Word comes from Job 8 where we get to hear from Bildad…

‘Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said, “How long will you say these things? And will the words of your mouth be a mighty wind? Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert righteousness? If your children have sinned against Him, Then He has handed them over to the power of their transgression and punished them. If you would [diligently] seek God And implore the compassion and favor of the Almighty, Then, if you are pure and upright, Surely now He will awaken for you And restore your righteous place. Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will greatly increase. “Inquire, please, of past generations, And consider and apply yourself to the things searched out by their fathers. For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are [like] a shadow [just a breath or a vapor]. Will they (the fathers) not teach you and tell you, And utter words from their hearts [the deepest part of their nature]? “Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the rushes or reed grass grow without water? While it is still green (in flower) and not cut down, Yet it withers before any other plant [when without water]. So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the godless will perish, For his confidence is fragile and breaks, And his trust is [like] a spider’s web. He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds tightly to it, but it does not endure. He thrives and prospers [like a green plant] before the sun, And his branches spread out over his garden. His [godless] roots are wrapped around a pile of rocks, And he gazes at a house of stones. If he is snatched from his place [in the garden], Then his place will forget him, saying, ‘I have never seen you.’ Behold, this is the joy of His way; And from out of the dust others will spring up and grow [to take his place]. Behold, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He strengthen or support evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with joyful shouting [if you are found blameless]. Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tents of the wicked will be no longer.”’

We find that Bildad was getting his turn and was certain in his mind that Job was in need of repenting because he believed that Job had sinned. In addition to today’s brutal attack, we will later read two more in chapters 18 and 25.

Bildad starts by telling Job that he was full of hot air, he was speaking out like a mighty wind.

Bildad is so sure of himself that he says that if Job could be exonerated then it means God is unjust, perverting justice and righteousness and therefore Job’s children must have sinned to have received such a judgment from God.

We see in today’s reading how Bildad’s first speech focuses on God’s justice.

Bildad believed that the principle of punishment · penalty · nemesis · fate · doom · one’s just deserts · due reward · just reward · wages · justice · retributive justice · poetic justice · judgment · reckoning · revenge · reprisal · requital · retaliation · payback · vengeance · an eye for an eye (and a tooth for a tooth) · tit for tat · measure for measure · redress · reparation · restitution · recompense · repayment · damages · satisfaction · remedy · comeback · atonement · amends · one’s comeuppance · measure was at work in this very situation.

We see how part of what he was saying came to be when in Job 42:12, Job was reconciled in restored when here we see how Bildad spoke of how just God would be by restoring Job but the issue or where he missed the mark was that he thought Job had done something wrong and so needed to

“[diligently] seek God And implore the compassion and favor of the Almighty, Then, if you are pure and upright, Surely now He will awaken for you And restore your righteous place. Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will greatly increase.”

Job 8:5-7

We learn how he even tries to point the past where it was believed that where there was suffering there had to be sin, which we learn through Jesus and the rest of this story isn’t always the case. We learn that sometimes things happen in order to show God’s glory. We learn how just because it is tradition doesn’t mean it is right. We learn how just because that is how it has always been understood or always been done that it doesn’t mean it is right. Today’s devotional puts the advice from the past as follows:

The past is supposed to be a rudder to guide a person, not an anchor to hold him or her down.

Job 8 Study

Bildad was trying to use cause and effect to prove his case and even uses nature as evidence. He used these facts to accuse Job of sin and of having forgotten God.

As friends, we need to try to avoid judging or condemning and instead focus on trying to understand.

It looks like after such a savage attack that Bildad tries to put out an olive branch when he tells Job that there is still hope of restoration.

‘Behold, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He strengthen or support evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with joyful shouting [if you are found blameless]. Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tents of the wicked will be no longer.”’

Job 8:20-22

So where do you find yourself today? How will you choose to respond? I know Job used to make me cringe as the idea of what was coming my way. It wasn’t till 2013 when I caught the real meaning of Job 42:12 as it happened on my last day before my new job after having worked for 19 years and 1 day at the previous company. I hold onto God when in the midst of trials and troubles. I trust in God through the storms and waves. I know that in and through it all I can consider it pure joy for it builds my faith, helps me persevere, and in the end will help me to be complete and lacking nothing. Through God’s Word, we learn how pain can have purpose like:

The Story of Job. – Day 10


How do you take accusations in the midst of your trials and challenges? How do you handle criticism that is off base and untrue? How do you handle your friends or people you thought were your friends when they start saying things about you that you know are untrue and hurtful?


Today’s reading we get to see Job’s response to Eliphaz’s words:

‘Then Job answered and said, “Oh, that my grief could actually be weighed And placed in the balances together with my tragedy [to see if my grief is the grief of a coward]! For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; Therefore my words have been incoherent, Because the arrows of the Almighty are within me, My spirit drinks their poison; The terrors of God are arrayed against me. Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder? Can something that has no taste to it be eaten without salt? Or is there any flavor in the white of an egg? My soul refuses to touch them; Such things are like loathsome food to me [sickening and repugnant]. “Oh that my request would come to pass, And that God would grant me the thing that I long for! I wish that it would please God to crush me, That He would let loose His hand and cut me off. Then I would still have consolation, And I would jump for joy amid unsparing pain, That I have not denied or hidden the words of the Holy One. What strength do I have left, that I should wait [and hope]? And what is ahead of me, that I should be patient and endure? Is my strength and endurance that of stones, Or is my flesh made of bronze? Is it that I have no help within myself, And that success and wisdom have been driven from me? “For the despairing man there should be kindness from his friend; So that he does not abandon (turn away from) the fear of the Almighty. My brothers have acted deceitfully like a brook, Like the torrents of brooks that vanish, Which are dull and dirty because of ice, And into which the snow melts and hides itself; When it is warm, they are silent and cease to flow; When it is hot, they vanish from their place. The paths of their course wind along, They go up into nothing and perish. [Your counsel is as helpful to me as a dry streambed in the heat of summer.] The caravans of Tema looked [for water], The caravans of Sheba waited for them [in vain]. They were put to shame and disappointed because they had trusted [that they would find water]; They came there and were ashamed. Indeed, you have now become like a dried-up stream, You see a terror [believing me to be a victim of the wrath of God] and are afraid [to be compassionate]. Did I ever say, ‘Give me something, ’ Or, ‘Pay a bribe for me from your wealth,’ Or, ‘Rescue me from the adversary’s hand,’ Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the tyrants’? “Teach me, and I will be silent; And show me how I have erred. How painful are words of honesty. But what does your argument prove? Do you intend to reprove my words [with a convincing argument], When the words of one in despair belong to the wind [and go ignored]? You would cast lots (gamble) over the fatherless And bargain away your friend. Now please look at me, And see if I lie to your face [for you know that I would not]. Turn away [from your suspicion], let there be no injustice; Turn away, my righteousness and vindication is still in it. Is there injustice or malice on my tongue? Can my palate not discern what is destructive?’

In using the amplified version of the text, we can get a lot of the additional context from the text and so was why I chose the Amplified version for this study.

We read in the start of Job’s words about his grief. We learn looking into that word that it was from the word (כעשׂ ka‛aś) – we also learn that it can be interpreted in two ways: “vexation, trouble, grief; Ecclesiastes 1:18; Ecclesiastes 2:23; or it may mean anger; Deuteronomy 32:19; Ezekiel 20:28.”

It speaks to the level and gravity of what he was going thru and how much he wanted his friends to understand the extent of his sorrow and his suffering before passing judgement on him and trying to condemn him.

We read how he was trying to get a measure by putting them into a scale in order to measure the weight of his sorrows, griefs, and woes. We read how he compares them to the weight of the sand of the sea. We see that the impact of all this pain is making it hard for him to fully express himself.

Job shares how the pain he is suffering is so much greater than anything man could cause. We learn in the studies how the pain was more to his heart, because it had to have been allowed by God, and yet he had loved God so much – with all that he had – and still was having to suffer so severely.

We learn how Job is comparing his plea with the animals as they don’t bray or low for nothing and neither is his complaint without cause. In today’s study we find the reminder that even though we may have cause to complain unlike beasts, wild or domesticated, we as rational beings should display a better spirit.

With Job’s depiction, we learn how he feels that his life has lost its pleasantness as food without salt. He lost his children, taking away his joy. Job speaks to his life to compare to how nauseating he is feeling as well as to answer Eliphaz.

We learn how Job is just wanting God to finish this process that is going on. We learn how his preference was that God would stop the suffering and the misery with death so it would be over with as we learned in chapter 3. Even though Eliphaz spoke to God granting long life, we learn how Job wasn’t wanting that right now without his health and his children to share it with.

Job had taken hold of God’s revelation and his commands and hence pursued them and followed them in his life. He shared what he believed. He realizes the holiness of God. He knows there is a reason for everything that happens. He knew there was purpose behind it, even when it didn’t feel good.

We learn in the studies how “had no strength to bear up against these accumulated trials; that he was afraid that he should be left to sink under them, and to complain of God; and that his friends were not to wonder if his strength gave way, and he uttered the language of complaint.“.

We see how Job was feeling that there was no hope in him to get out of this, he had no more strength to try. We see how any hope of deliverance had left him.

His friends weren’t helping him. He compares their help to a dry riverbed in the hot of the summer.

We don’t find Job admitting to having sinned but instead he asks his friends to teach him, help him understand where he erred, to show him where they think he had sinned for he didn’t know of anything that would have caused his current situation.

The Story of Job. – Day 9


Ever had someone try to blame the temptations in their lives on God? Ever had someone try to blame you for calamities, troubles, or trials that occur in your life as though it was some punishment from God? Ever compared their accusations against the plans and promises of God? How can you judge the feedback you are receiving to know if it is true or it is not? How can you discern the truth in the midst of accusations? How can you discern if there is something that you need to fix or work on? Will you turn to God for wisdom and direction? Will you ask the Holy Spirit to be your comforter and your guide? Will you invite Jesus into your heart in order to help ensure everything gets cleaned up and cleaned out?


Today’s reading from the book of Job comes from Job 5:

‘“Call now—is there anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones (angels) will you turn? For anger slays the foolish man, And jealousy kills the simple (naive). I have seen the foolish taking root [and outwardly prospering], But I cursed his dwelling immediately [for his destruction was certain]. His children are far from safety [and included in their father’s ruin], They are oppressed and crushed in the [court of justice in the city’s] gate, And there is no one to rescue them . The hungry devour his harvest And take it even [when it grows] among the thorns; The trap opens for [his] wealth. For affliction does not come forth from the dust, Nor does trouble spring forth from the ground. For man is born for trouble, [As naturally] as sparks fly upward. “As for me, I would seek God and inquire of Him, And I would commit my cause to God; Who does great and unsearchable things, Marvelous things without number. He gives rain upon the earth And sends waters upon the fields, So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And He lifts to safety those who mourn. He frustrates the devices and schemes of the crafty, So that their hands cannot attain success or achieve anything of [lasting] worth. He catches the [so-called] wise in their own shrewdness, And the advice of the devious is quickly thwarted. In the daytime they meet in darkness, And at noon they grope as in the night. But God saves [the innocent] from the sword of the mouth of the devious, And the poor from the hand of the mighty. So the helpless have hope, And injustice shuts its mouth. “Behold, how happy and fortunate is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise or reject the discipline of the Almighty [subjecting you to trial and suffering]. For He inflicts pain, but He binds up and gives relief; He wounds, but His hands also heal. He will rescue you from six troubles; Even in seven, evil will not touch you. In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword. You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes. You will laugh at violence and famine, And you will not be afraid of the wild beasts of the earth. For you will be in harmony with the stones of the field, And the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. You will know also that your tent is secure and at peace, And you will visit your dwelling and fear no loss [nor find anything amiss]. You will know also that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. You will come to your grave in old age, Like the stacking of grain [on the threshing floor] in its season. Behold this; we have investigated it, and it is true. Hear and heed it, and know for yourself [for your own good].”’

Job 5

Today’s study of God’s Word comes to us with help from the following references:


As today’s reading starts we see Job being called out by Eliphaz to enter into an argument or litigation against God. Job is challenged to see if God will even answer such a cry from him and step down from heaven to give an account for His handling or dealings with Job. We learn how Eliphaz was trying to allow the information to be put out there in order to show Job that he was wrong and that nobody would be able to be found to take up Job’s case. Eliphaz tries to use all that happened to Job as proof that he was a great sinner. Eliphaz tries through this to point to Job being weak minded and wouldn’t be able to refute his accusations. Eliphaz tries to relate how the wicked may prosper for a time but eventually they will lose out to what has happened to Job. We read how the accusation was how Job couldn’t benefit from his labor and it was because of his problems. Eliphaz keeps trying to point Job to God and look to Him for answers.

Eliphaz was convinced that ‘trouble” always starts somewhere; it does not just “happen” such as (“trouble spring out of the ground”). By saying that he had seen sinners prosper (“taking root”), only to lose everything in the end, Eliphaz wrongly suggested that Job’s sin led to the death of his children.

Speaking in spiritual platitudes, Job’s friend presumed to know the cause of Job’s suffering. Eliphaz also told him if he would just submit (“despise not”), to the (“chastening of the Almighty”), Job would reap a harvest of blessing. But no one can make such a prediction. Eliphaz modeled how not to address another person’s affliction.

So where are you at today? My hope and prayer is that You will ask Jesus into your heart so that I will get to spend eternity in God’s presence with you. Are you ready for forgiveness and peace? Are you ready for a hope and a future? Are you ready for a transformation where the old is gone and the new has come? Are you ready to being the journey of knowing right from wrong? Then let’s pray together to invite Jesus into your heart and your life so that His peace which surpasses all understanding can guide you and comfort you, protect your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Do you realize that what is happening isn’t always a symptom?


Ever heard people make comments like “I don’t know what they did, but it must have been bad for that to have happened to them”? Ever found people speaking blame based on what is going on without actually knowing what is going on? Consider the story of the man born blind and the question that was asked – “who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?” Jesus’ response speaks to the fact/the truth that we can’t and shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on the situation, the circumstance, or the symptoms that are being shown when He says “Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that the works of God might be brought to light in him. ”

In today’s reading we see Job being accused again and Job’s rebuttable in Job 15 and 16. Yes, it is true we are in a fallen world and yes all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But we aren’t to be judging but rather we are to be loving and pointing people towards our Father in Heaven!

Rather than judge, let’s ask God for wisdom, discernment and how He would have us work in this situation. While we are here, there is something God has things for us to do. We see how Jesus spits in some dirt and then puts the mud on the man’s eyes and sends him away with specific instructions – “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” and he did and came back seeing…a life transformed by an encounter with Jesus. Because Jesus saw beyond the man’s circumstances and met him right where he was at and then touched him to miraculous results – a life transformed.

As I read Job’s closing statement, it reminds me and speaks to me about the advocate I have in Heaven, Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father interceding for me. Job puts it this way…

19Even now my witness is in heaven, my advocate is on high.
20My intercessor is my friend; as my eyes pour out tears to God;
21he contends with God on behalf of man as one pleads for a friend.

So where are you at today? Are you in Job’s situation? Are you in the situation of one of his friends? What will you do about it? Will you keep your plea to Jesus for help? Will you not judge based on the situation, circumstance, or symptom, but rather show compassion like Jesus did?

Today’s reading continues into Luke 13. It shows how we need to turn back to God. There isn’t a scale of sinners from worst to best. Have you sinned? Yes or No? Do you know what the penalty of sin is? The penalty of sin is death! But that doesn’t have to be our final destination for Jesus came that we would have life and life to the full, so we need to turn back to God and ask Jesus into our hearts for the same scripture about the penalty also tells us “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” You may have heard the word we must “repent” – we must turn from our ways and turn back to God. Will you be good for something or will you be cast away? Will you bear good fruit or will you be cut down? Will you start to till the soil of your heart and add some Jesus fertilizer so that you will and can bear good fruit?

As a leader, will you lead by example? What example are people seeing as they watch you? Will your actions make a difference and cause people to turn to God praising Him because of what you have done? Is it against the law to do what is good, what is right, what is just? Don’t be a hypocrite!

Luke continues with the story of the mustard seed. It’s so small as a seed, but when it grows up it is a place of shade and rest for birds. So if we can or could just have the faith the size of a mustard seed, imagine what God can and will do in and through us. We see another example with flour and the impact of a little bit of yeast and how it can impact the entire quantity of flour. Even a little bit of sin can cause us and others to be impacted.

So do you want to be saved? Will you ask Jesus into your life? Will you open the door to your heart and ask Jesus in? He’s knocking! Will you answer the door? Will you live a life in relationship with Jesus? Or will you be someone who knows about Jesus? It makes a difference!

Jesus concludes here speaking to the Pharisees, speaking to what will happen to Him and that it must take place in Jerusalem. Where He will be tried and killed and how He will be back on the third day.

Today’s reading closes in Revelation 8. And it got quiet, too quiet. And then it began…incense offered up and prayers raised up to God. And then the noise began. The trumpets blew. The first trumpet triggered hail and fire mixed with blood thrown upon the earth and 1/3 burned up. The second trumpet triggered something like a huge mountain ablaze with fire was thrown into the sea and 1/3 of the ships were destroyed. The third trumpet triggered a great star to fall from heaven like a burning torch and it fell on the rivers and the springs and 1/3 of the waters became wormwood (bitter). The fourth trumpet triggered a 1/3 of the sun and 1/3 of the moon and 1/3 of the stars to stop shinning, darkening the sky both day and night. It closes with an angel sounding a warning to those who were still upon the earth as the remaining trumpets were about to go.

Ever been questioned or accused?


Ever been called in and interrogated? Ever been questions about something? Ever been accused of something? Ever found yourself in a place where they are trying to make a case for something that didn’t align? Ever been questioned about stuff that everyone already should know the answers? Ever wondered what are they trying to do? What are they trying to get out of me? How do they expect me to answer? Why is this happening? What do they expect to get out of this process? What can I do?

Ever been denied or been betrayed? Ever been rejected? Ever had someone close to you walk away? Ever had someone close to you lie about you or even knowing you? Ever felt like you were an outcast? Ever found yourself feeling alone?

Today’s reading starts in just such a place…

The High Priest Questions Jesus

(Matthew 26.59-66; Mark 14.55-64; Luke 22.66-71)

19The High Priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20Jesus answered, “I have always spoken publicly to everyone; all my teaching was done in the synagogues and in the Temple, where all the people come together. I have never said anything in secret. 21Why, then, do you question me? Question the people who heard me. Ask them what I told them—they know what I said.” 22When Jesus said this, one of the guards there slapped him and said, “How dare you talk like that to the High Priest!” 23Jesus answered him, “If I have said anything wrong, tell everyone here what it was. But if I am right in what I have said, why do you hit me?” 24Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the High Priest.

Peter Denies Jesus Again

(Matthew 26.71-75; Mark 14.69-72; Luke 22.58-62)

25Peter was still standing there keeping himself warm. So the others said to him, “Aren’t you also one of the disciples of that man?” But Peter denied it. “No, I am not,” he said. 26One of the High Priest’s slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, spoke up. “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” he asked. 27Again Peter said “No”—and at once a rooster crowed.

Where there any witnesses? Was there anyone who could confirm or deny? Do you realize the power of 2 witnesses? Do you realize the impact to a trial when you have 2 or more witnesses who can corroborate a story? Do you realize the outcome when such evidence is available? Do you realize the holes in the case when there are no such witness?

The Two Witnesses

1I was then given a stick that looked like a measuring-rod, and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count those who are worshiping in the temple. 2But do not measure the outer courts, because they have been given to the heathen, who will trample on the Holy City for forty-two months. 3I will send my two witnesses dressed in sackcloth, and they will proclaim God’s message during those 1, 260 days.” 4The two witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lamps that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and destroys their enemies; and in this way whoever tries to harm them will be killed. 6They have authority to shut up the sky so that there will be no rain during the time they proclaim God’s message. They have authority also over the springs of water, to turn them into blood; they have authority also to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish. 7When they finish proclaiming their message, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will fight against them. He will defeat them and kill them, 8and their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, where their Lord was crucified. The symbolic name of that city is Sodom, or Egypt. 9People from all nations, tribes, languages, and races will look at their bodies for three and a half days and will not allow them to be buried. 10The people of the earth will be happy because of the death of these two. They will celebrate and send presents to each other, because those two prophets brought much suffering upon the whole human race. 11After three and a half days a life-giving breath came from God and entered them, and they stood up; and all who saw them were terrified. 12Then the two prophets heard a loud voice say to them from heaven, “Come up here!” As their enemies watched, they went up into heaven in a cloud. 13At that very moment there was a violent earthquake; a tenth of the city was destroyed, and seven thousand people were killed. The rest of the people were terrified and praised the greatness of the God of heaven.
14The second horror is over, but the third horror will come soon!

The Seventh Trumpet

15Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The power to rule over the world belongs now to our Lord and his Messiah, and he will rule forever and ever!” 16Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones in front of God threw themselves face downward and worshiped God, 17saying: “Lord God Almighty, the one who is and who was! We thank you that you have taken your great power and have begun to rule! 18The heathen were filled with rage, because the time for your anger has come, the time for the dead to be judged. The time has come to reward your servants, the prophets, and all your people, all who have reverence for you, great and small alike. The time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth!” 19God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the Covenant Box was seen there. Then there were flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

Put your trust in God! He knows right where you are at and what you are going through! Don’t lose hope, but rather put your hope and trust in God! Turn to Him! Ask Him for wisdom and discernment! And allow Him to work in and through your life!

21He watches every step we take. 22There is no darkness dark enough to hide a sinner from God. 23God does not need to set a time for us to go and be judged by him. 24He does not need an investigation to remove leaders and replace them with others. 25Because he knows what they do; he overthrows them and crushes them by night. 26He punishes sinners where all can see it, 27because they have stopped following him and ignored all his commands. 28They forced the poor to cry out to God, and he heard their calls for help. 29If God decided to do nothing at all, no one could criticize him. If he hid his face, we would be helpless. 30There would be nothing that nations could do to keep godless oppressors from ruling them. 31Job, have you confessed your sins to God and promised not to sin again? 32Have you asked God to show you your faults, and have you agreed to stop doing evil? 33Since you object to what God does, can you expect him to do what you want? The decision is yours, not mine; tell us now what you think. 34Any sensible person will surely agree; and the wise who hear me will say 35that Job is speaking from ignorance and that nothing he says makes sense. 36Think through everything that Job says; you will see that he talks like an evil man. 37To his sins he adds rebellion; in front of us all he mocks God.

Take a look around you! Do you see what is going on in the world around you? Do you realize what it is setting up? Do you know the consequences of such things? What can you do? What will you do? How will you react and respond? What do you think God should do? How much patience do you think He has? How long do you think He will wait?

1During the time that Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah, the Lord gave this message to Micah, who was from the town of Moresheth. The Lord revealed to Micah all these things about Samaria and Jerusalem.

A Lament for Samaria and Jerusalem

2Hear this, all you nations; listen to this, all who live on earth! The Sovereign Lord will testify against you. Listen! He speaks from his heavenly temple. 3The Lord is coming from his holy place; he will come down and walk on the tops of the mountains. 4Then the mountains will melt under him like wax in a fire; they will pour down into the valleys like water pouring down a hill. 5All this will happen because the people of Israel have sinned and rebelled against God. Who is to blame for Israel’s rebellion? Samaria, the capital city itself Who is guilty of idolatry in Judah? Jerusalem itself 6So the Lord says, “I will make Samaria a pile of ruins in the open country, a place for planting grapevines. I will pour the rubble of the city down into the valley, and will lay bare the city’s foundations. 7All its precious idols will be smashed to pieces, everything given to its temple prostitutes will be destroyed by fire, and all its images will become a desolate heap. Samaria acquired these things for its fertility rites, and now her enemies will carry them off for temple prostitutes elsewhere.” 8Then Micah said, “Because of this I will mourn and lament. To show my sorrow, I will walk around barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and wail like an ostrich. 9Samaria’s wounds cannot be healed, and Judah is about to suffer in the same way; destruction has reached the gates of Jerusalem itself, where my people live.”

The Enemy Approaches Jerusalem

10Don’t tell our enemies in Gath about our defeat; don’t let them see you weeping. People of Beth Leaphrah, show your despair by rolling in the dust! 11You people of Shaphir, go into exile, naked and ashamed. Those who live in Zaanan do not dare to come out of their city. When you hear the people of Bethezel mourn, you will know that there is no refuge there. 12The people of Maroth anxiously wait for relief, because the Lord has brought disaster close to Jerusalem. 13You that live in Lachish, hitch the horses to the chariots. You imitated the sins of Israel and so caused Jerusalem to sin. 14And now, people of Judah, say good-bye to the town of Moresheth Gath. The kings of Israel will get no help from the town of Achzib. 15People of Mareshah, the Lord will hand you over to an enemy, who is going to capture your town. The leaders of Israel will go and hide in the cave at Adullam. 16People of Judah, cut off your hair in mourning for the children you love. Make yourselves as bald as vultures, because your children will be taken away from you into exile.

What is your plan? What is your purpose? What is the reason for what you do? Do you realize the difference your intentions are to what you can accomplish? What’s it going to take for the light to go on? What’s it going to take for the aha moment to get you?

The Fate of Those Who Oppress the Poor

1How terrible it will be for those who lie awake and plan evil! When morning comes, as soon as they have the chance, they do the evil they planned. 2When they want fields, they seize them; when they want houses, they take them. No one’s family or property is safe. 3And so the Lord says, “I am planning to bring disaster on you, and you will not be able to escape it. You are going to find yourselves in trouble, and then you will not walk so proudly any more. 4When that time comes, people will use the story about you as an example of disaster, and they will sing this song of despair about your experience: We are completely ruined! The Lord has taken our land away And given it to those who took us captive.” 5So then, when the time comes for the land to be given back to the Lord’s people, there will be no share for any of you. 6The people preach at me and say, “Don’t preach at us. Don’t preach about all that. God is not going to disgrace us. 7Do you think the people of Israel are under a curse? Has the Lord lost his patience? Would he really do such things? Doesn’t he speak kindly to those who do right?” 8The Lord replies, “You attack my people like enemies. Men return from battle, thinking they are safe at home, but there you are, waiting to steal the coats off their backs. 9You drive the women of my people out of the homes they love, and you have robbed their children of my blessings forever. 10Get up and go; there is no safety here any more. Your sins have doomed this place to destruction. 11“These people want the kind of prophet who goes around full of lies and deceit and says, ‘I prophesy that wine and liquor will flow for you.’ 12“But I will gather you together, all you people of Israel that are left. I will bring you together like sheep returning to the fold. Like a pasture full of sheep, your land will once again be filled with many people.” 13God will open the way for them and lead them out of exile. They will break out of the city gates and go free. Their king, the Lord himself, will lead them out.

Micah Denounces Israel’s Leaders

1Listen, you rulers of Israel! You are supposed to be concerned about justice, 2yet you hate what is good and you love what is evil. You skin my people alive and tear the flesh off their bones. 3You eat my people up. You strip off their skin, break their bones, and chop them up like meat for the pot. 4The time is coming when you will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer you. He will not listen to your prayers, for you have done evil. 5My people are deceived by prophets who promise peace to those who pay them, but threaten war for those who don’t. To these prophets the Lord says, 6“Prophets, your day is almost over; the sun is going down on you. Because you mislead my people, you will have no more prophetic visions, and you will not be able to predict anything.” 7Those who predict the future will be disgraced by their failure. They will all be humiliated because God does not answer them. 8But as for me, the Lord fills me with his spirit and power, and gives me a sense of justice and the courage to tell the people of Israel what their sins are. 9Listen to me, you rulers of Israel, you that hate justice and turn right into wrong. 10You are building God’s city, Jerusalem, on a foundation of murder and injustice. 11The city’s rulers govern for bribes, the priests interpret the Law for pay, the prophets give their revelations for money—and they all claim that the Lord is with them. “No harm will come to us,” they say. “The Lord is with us.” 12And so, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the Temple hill will become a forest.

Deal with the person first … build a relationship …


We need to handle the heart of the matter! We need to build up a relationship! We need to face the situation with heart, love, grace and mercy! We need to be like Jesus who reached out to people in need, people in pain, and people who others were trying to judge and reject! We need to be people who are loving others! We need to be the outreaching, embracing, and training type of people God has called us to be as the church!

Start with the person through relationship building
so that
you are able to speak life into their life

This morning’s reading starts this topic with a very real example. How do you handle a situation when people bring such a situation into your life? Will you confront the accusers? Will you confront the accusations? Will you speak the hope of Jesus of forgiveness? Will you speak the truth of God’s Word to point people to Jesus and to living a transformed life?

The Woman Caught in Adultery

1Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?” 6They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7As they stood there asking him questions, he straightened up and said to them, “Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.” 8Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. 9When they heard this, they all left, one by one, the older ones first. Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing there. 10He straightened up and said to her, “Where are they? Is there no one left to condemn you?”
11“No one, sir,” she answered. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, but do not sin again.”

We have all sinned! We have all fallen short of the glory of God! We all need forgiveness! We all missed the mark! Sin is sin! There isn’t smaller vs. larger sin! There isn’t that sin is so much worse than my sin! We all need forgiveness for having missed the mark! So don’t judge someone else because of what they have done, but rather love them so that they may receive the grace of God! And help those who are trying to judge to see the reality of the situation. Imagine being part of those who tried to bring the woman to justice and ended up seeing Jesus writing your sins in the dirt, maybe not your name next to it, but revealing sins that you alone would know you are guilty of! Let’s be ambassadors of love! Let’s be ambassadors of hope! Let’s be ambassadors of truth! Let’s be ambassadors of forgiveness! So that we can build up relationships and help others to come into the relationship that everyone needs with Jesus! So let’s be real! Let’s be true! And not be false teachers!

False Teachers

1False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. 2Even so, many will follow their immoral ways; and because of what they do, others will speak evil of the Way of truth. 3In their greed these false teachers will make a profit out of telling you made-up stories. For a long time now their Judge has been ready, and their Destroyer has been wide awake!

4God did not spare the angels who sinned, but threw them into hell, where they are kept chained in darkness, waiting for the Day of Judgment. 5God did not spare the ancient world, but brought the flood on the world of godless people; the only ones he saved were Noah, who preached righteousness, and seven other people. 6God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, destroying them with fire, and made them an example of what will happen to the godless. 7He rescued Lot, a good man, who was distressed by the immoral conduct of lawless people. 8That good man lived among them, and day after day he suffered agony as he saw and heard their evil actions. 9And so the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials and how to keep the wicked under punishment for the Day of Judgment, 10especially those who follow their filthy bodily lusts and despise God’s authority.

Let’s draw closer to God and build up our relationship with Him through the bond and sacrifice of Jesus who made a way when there wasn’t a way! Let’s allow Jesus’ covering to empower and embolden us to draw closer to God and walk in alignment with God’s will for our lives! Let’s be His people and let Him be our God! Let’s build up our relationship with God and allow His plan to be our plan and His will to be our will! Let’s not be distracted by what others say, but let’s be focus to do what God says! Let’s not forget that God created us on purpose with a purpose and for a purpose! God’s plan for us is for God! God’s plan is for us to have a hope and a future!

Job’s Complaint to God

1Finally Job broke the silence and cursed the day on which he had been born.

2-3O God, put a curse on the day I was born; put a curse on the night when I was conceived! 4Turn that day into darkness, God. Never again remember that day; never again let light shine on it. 5Make it a day of gloom and thick darkness; cover it with clouds, and blot out the sun. 6Blot that night out of the year, and never let it be counted again; 7make it a barren, joyless night. 8Tell the sorcerers to curse that day, those who know how to control Leviathan. 9Keep the morning star from shining; give that night no hope of dawn. 10Curse that night for letting me be born, for exposing me to trouble and grief. 11I wish I had died in my mother’s womb or died the moment I was born. 12Why did my mother hold me on her knees? Why did she feed me at her breast? 13If I had died then, I would be at rest now, 14sleeping like the kings and rulers who rebuilt ancient palaces. 15Then I would be sleeping like princes who filled their houses with gold and silver, 16or sleeping like a stillborn child. 17In the grave wicked people stop their evil, and tired workers find rest at last. 18Even prisoners enjoy peace, free from shouts and harsh commands. 19Everyone is there, the famous and the unknown, and slaves at last are free. 20Why let people go on living in misery? Why give light to those in grief 21They wait for death, but it never comes; they prefer a grave to any treasure. 22They are not happy till they are dead and buried; 23God keeps their future hidden and hems them in on every side. 24Instead of eating, I mourn, and I can never stop groaning. 25Everything I fear and dread comes true. 26I have no peace, no rest, and my troubles never end.
