THRIVE: Study The Word! Praise God!

What do you think of when you read “The Word”? Where do you turn in scripture when you look to understand “The Word”? Where does it bring you when you’ve looked into “The Word”? How does it help you to praise God?

This morning as “The Word” came to my mind it caused me to reflect on a conversation I had this week where someone commented that they didn’t believe that Jesus is God. So I started turning to God’s Word, Scripture to let it speak for itself.

It first brought me to the book of John and so let’s read from John 1 where it says:

‘In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being. In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it]. ‘

John 1:1-5

As I consider this, I looked to dig deeper into what is being said and found some references that speak to this scripture. I found the following that reflects on this scripture: “The Word is the communication of the Father. He is the rational force of Fatherly fulsomeness overflowing in infinite goodness. That Word was no impersonal force but a full person, alongside the Father at the principial moment of all things. The Word was both with God and was God. Was and with. What God was, the Word was. The Word was God, and the Word was with God. Coequal, indistinguishable, yet distinct.

As we consider and even contemplate the trinity, we might wonder how there could be one God and three persons and yet even if we go back to the beginning and even consider the creation story we see how the Bible says “Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.”

God created all human beings in His likeness – “God’s likeness denotes our capacity to rule over creation and be in relationship with God and other humans and to exercise reason, intelligence, speech, moral consciousness, creativity, rationality, and choice.

Let’s choose to love God and love people in accordance with God’s commandments to us! Even as from the original sin made it possible for us to understand good and even just as the Bible speaks to us when it says “And the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), knowing [how to distinguish between] good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take from the tree of life as well, and eat [its fruit], and live [in this fallen, sinful condition] forever”—“.

Ever heard people speak of the royal we when they refer to me, myself, and I? So it speaks of one but in three persons similar to a triune God or a trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So in Genesis 1:26 and Genesis 3:22, “the “Us” and “Our” indicate God the Father speaking in the fullness of His divine creative power to the Son and the Holy Spirit“.

So let’s return to John 1 and add in an additional context for us to consider as we speak and look to learn more about “The Word” when we read:

‘And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception). John testified [repeatedly] about Him and has cried out [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’ ” For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift]. For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God [His essence, His divine nature] at any time; the [One and] only begotten God [that is, the unique Son] who is in the intimate presence of the Father, He has explained Him [and interpreted and revealed the awesome wonder of the Father]. ‘

John 1:14-18

So going back through John 1’s message, we learn “The Word was in the beginning“, “Through the Word the Father created“, “Life was in Jesus and that life is the source of any light leading to any perception by any man“, “the darkness will not prevail over Jesus, and even if the forces of darkness kill him, he will rise. Life is in him“, and “Nor can people in darkness understand that light unless they are born of God” which comes from the earlier verse that tells us:

‘But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right [the authority, the privilege] to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name— who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth—they are born of God—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified]. ‘

John 1:12-13

As we read in John 1 starting with verse 14, we learn that Jesus is The Word. As we approach Christmas and the reality that Jesus was born of a virgin in a manger, we read in verse 14 how “the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception)“.

There are various reference materials on this but to turn to God’s Word to interpret God’s Word is best in my opinion. Here are a couple references for those who want to consider other options/opinions: and

So as we prepare to enter into the Christmas season and as I look to close out this year in which the goal is to thrive, let’s make the decision to Study The Word and Praise God!

Scripture for Today:

As we prepare to dig into God’s Word today, let’s consider this reality as we decide how we are going to live our lives:

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
