What’s in a name?

Is it just a label or is it more than that? Is it saying something about who you are? Is it saying something about where you are from? Is it saying something about what you will become? Is your name something that makes people smile? Is your name something that makes people hopeful? Is your name something that provides legacy? Is your name something that speaks to your heritage? Is your name something that points to your family? Is your name something that points to your birthplace?

Do you know the meaning of your name? Do you realize the connection your name has with God’s Word? Do you have a connection because of your name to someone from the Bible? I know for me Philip the evangelist was one person who I had connected with early on in my Bible reading experiences. He had four daughters who were prophetess. At the time I only had one daughter but there were signs that she could see things before they were there. I remember one morning asking God if I was going to have four daughters too because of the strong connection I felt to Philip and that morning God had me read as part of my pre-planned/scheduled reading plan the story of the promise of Isaac. On that day the name I would give a son switched from Benjamin to Isaac and I told my wife we would have a boy. It took years before that happened as we lost two babies during pregnancy and had another daughter before my son was born. Many years later, I read the book Heaven is for Real and when I got to the point where the little boy tells his mom that he has another sister in heaven and when questioned about her name and getting back the answer, she said she didn’t have one because you never gave her one, it broke my heart and made me cry as God opened my eyes to the reality that I have two daughters who skipped life on earth but are waiting in heaven for me to get to meet them one day. Even as I write this, I realize we never gave them names either. Something to think about and discuss with my wife.

Do you realize the value in your name? Do you realize the potential value in your name? Do you realize names are important to God? Do you realize that knowing other people’s names should be important to us?

What’s in a name? Is there a backstory? Is there a story? Is there value in choosing a good name?

Ever read the story of Jabez? It speaks to how his name was chosen and how God was able to bless him!

9Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” 10Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10

So how about you? Are you ready to live your life so that your name is good and valued?

Today’s reading from Tanakh:

  • Isaiah 49 (sefaria.org)
    • Listen, O coastlands, to me, And give heed, O nations afar: The LORD appointed me before I was born, He named me while I was in my mother’s womb.
    • He made my mouth like a sharpened blade, He hid me in the shadow of His hand, And He made me like a polished arrow; He concealed me in His quiver.
  • Isaiah 50 (sefaria.org)
  • Isaiah 51 (sefaria.org)

Heavenly Father
I come to you in prayer asking for the
forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my
mouth and believe with my heart that
Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the
Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven.
and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of
Heaven. Father, I believe that Jesus rose
from the dead and I ask you right now to
come in to my life and be my personal
Lord and Savior. I repent of my Sins and
will Worship you all the day's of my Life!
Because your word is truth, I confess with
my mouth that I am Born Again and
Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus
Name, Amen
