Do you realize the benefits of honoring your mother and father?

Do you realize the benefits of honoring your mother and father?

Just because we are unaware of what we are doing, it doesn’t negate God’s promises. When I consider where I am now and the blessings that God has provided through the highs and the lows, I trace it back to a decision about 20 years ago. I didn’t do it because I was in God’s Word or knew God’s Word but rather because I felt I would be ok with either option and so wanted to give the decision to my parents and my wife’s parents. So going back I had gotten to a point in my career where I was needing to make a change, my boss had left to a startup, my boss’s boss (GM of the group) had left to a startup and I was found reporting to the President of the company. So I gave my parents and my wife’s parents the choice: (1) Leave the company and find another job or (2) Leave the country and go work at corporate headquarters. Now take into consideration that some factors they had to consider included their child and their only grandchild would be impacted by the decision. Both parental units said the same thing “you would be crazy to leave the company” and so the process began to find a new role at HQ. Now time shift a few months later and my wife and I have an encounter with God and have our lives transformed. During one of my devotional times, as I was reading from God’s Word, God revealed to me that because I obeyed His command I could take hold of His promise. Have you ever read the 10 commandments and skimmed or skipped over the part that says “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.“? The interesting thing is that it shows up in Exodus 20:1-26 and Deuteronomy 5:1-22 and in case you thought that was old school or old testament only, if you keep reading you will see it comes up again in Ephesians 6:1-3 too. In Ephesians it says “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.””. As I continue to watch and notice that things are going well in the land God gave us and how we have been enjoying long life, I reflect on it regularly the power of this commandment. I considered how had I just gone about it my own way instead of offering it up or giving it up to them to decide, even if I had of made the exact same decision, I would have missed the blessing and the promise of God. And even though this wasn’t the reason for my action (as I hadn’t really realized that it is about having a living relationship with Jesus), God is faithful to His Word!

So what about you? Are you willing to make a decision that can impact your life for the rest of eternity? Are you willing to make a decision that can produce a legacy for the generations that are yet to come? Are you willing to offer it up, give it up to God rather than trying to go it on your own? Are you willing to humble yourself and submit your life to God? Even in the midst of trials to consider it pure joy? Even in the midst of trouble to take heart? Even in moments of anxiety and cares to cast them upon God?

Will you choose today to invite Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior? Want to do it now before we even jump into today’s reading? Scroll to the bottom of the article and you will find a place to pray with me and receive Jesus into your heart and start living a transformed life.

August is in the rearview mirror
August is in the rearview mirror and September has just begun, so where are you headed? Can you see the tree within the forest? They say hindsight is 2020 but that is only true if you are willing to learn from the past in order to avoid repeating it. It requires that we don’t forget the past and then find ourselves repeating the mistakes and the follies. Don’t be foolish! Seek wisdom from God who will give it generously!

Today’s reading starts with this topic but doesn’t stop there because as parents we have a responsibility too. Each one of us has a role to play and God provides that in and through today’s reading…

The 49 week challenge – Day 253

Want to join me in the challenge? Click Day 253 link to join me and sign up.

The 49 week challenge has 6 days in which to notice a promise to trust, a command to obey, a truth to embrace, a warning to heed, or an encouragement to rest in and 1 day to reflect on what you’re learning and to share it with others, to think back over the week’s readings, to see connections between the various passages of the week. Each day we have time to talk to God and contemplate what is being said through His Word, and even more so on the 7th day.

How interested are you in what will happen today? How interested are you in what will be required of you today? How interested are you in what decisions you will need to make today? How interested are you in hearing from God today? How interested are you in accomplishing what God is calling you to do today? What if it were life and death decision? What if it were everlasting life and everlasting death decision? What if the decision that you make today will determine how you will spend the rest of eternity? Would it make a difference?

If you are interested in getting together or sharing the information together, please let me know through the comment section below, through email, or even through text messages.

My Notes:

As day 253 begins, I would hate to miss giving the opportunity to anyone who hasn’t received Jesus into their lives as their Lord and Savior an opportunity to make the decision today and the blessing to get to live out the rest of the year in that power and that truth and that hope.

If you would like to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, why not join me in this prayer?

Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing that I can do to save myself. I confess my complete helplessness to forgive my own sin or to work my way to heaven. At this moment I trust Christ alone as the One who bore my sin when He died on the cross. I believe that He did all that will ever be necessary for me to stand in your holy presence. I thank you that Christ was raised from the dead as a guarantee of my own resurrection. As best as I can, I now transfer my trust to Him. I am grateful that He has promised to receive me despite my many sins and failures. Father, I take you at your word. I thank you that I can face death now that you are my Savior. Thank you for the assurance that you will walk with me through the deep valley. Thank you for hearing this prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
