Ever been so close to the finish line and wondered if you just keep going or if you should speed up and finish strong or because you are fading just coast in? Ever seen where people stop just before the line and lose out? Ever seen people slow down and get passed by 3 people and end up in 4th place? Ever seen where people get an extra boost of energy and finish the race strong? Remember why you start the race!
Let’s consider what the Bible has to say about finishing…
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.— 2 Timothy 4:7
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.— Acts 20:24
‘Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.’— 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,— Hebrews 12:1
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.— Philippians 3:14
Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.— 2 John 1:8
‘so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. ‘— Colossians 1:10-14
The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.— Ecclesiastes 7:8
‘ “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ ‘— Luke 14:28-30
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.— Philippians 1:6
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.— Galatians 6:9
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,— Colossians 3:23
‘Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained. ‘— Philippians 3:12-16
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.— James 1:3
It took motivation to get you started and it will take motivation to get you through it and it will take motivation to help finish it strong! So whenever you wonder or question “why?” go back to what it was that got you started to rekindle the passion, rekindle the buy-in, rekindle the discipline, rekindle the accountability, thrive on the resistance and focus on the goal! Pass it on! Teach others! Invest in it so that you will get to see a good return for the glory of God, in Jesus’s name!
