What is the quality of the feedback you are receiving?


The Story of Job. – Day 18

When you think about giving or receiving feedback, are there any methodologies or practices you consider in how you deliver it? Do you try the sandwich method where it has to start and end with a positive and then the real meat of the situation comes in the middle? Do you ensure that before you speak you use the T.H.I.N.K. principle: T – is it true? H – is it helpful? I – is it inspiring? N – is it necessary? K – is it kind? Whatever method or model that you use, do you ever consider how it will be/get received by the other person? When you receive feedback, are you observing what technique is being used on you? If they start with something positive are you getting ready for the bomb to be dropped on you when it gets to the inside of the sandwich? If they start with something positive are you waiting for the shoe to drop? Does it make a difference who is trying to give you the feedback? Does it matter if they are someone who has seemed invested and caring about you? Does it matter if they are someone who seemed to not really care or even want to talk before that point? When you receive feedback are you looking for all the queues being used from tone to body language to the actual words being spoken? How do you judge the feedback being provided? Are you able to discern through the Holy Spirit the actual meaning and intent? Are you able to give it up to God to know if it is something that you need to pick up or just leave it alone?

Words have power! We need to use our words wisely! Words have the power to create! Words have the power to tear down! Words have the power to build up! Words have the power to destroy! Words are a gift given by God that we need to be good stewards of! Words have the power to bless! Words have the power to curse! Words have the power to inspire! Words have the power to extinguish! Words have the power to acquit! Words have the power to condemn!


Consider these verses from the AMP translation of the Bible about the importance of how we use our words:

  • Hebrews 11:3 – By faith [that is, with an inherent trust and enduring confidence in the power, wisdom and goodness of God] we understand that the worlds (universe, ages) were framed and created [formed, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose] by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
  • Proverbs 12:6 – The [malevolent] words of the wicked lie in wait for [innocent] blood [to slander], But the mouth of the upright will rescue and protect them.
  • Proverbs 18:21 – Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.
  • Matthew 12:34–35 – You brood of vipers, how can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man, from his [inner] good treasure, brings out good things; and the evil man, from his [inner] evil treasure, brings out evil things.
  • Matthew 12:36–37 – But I tell you, on the day of judgment people will have to give an accounting for every careless or useless word they speak. For by your words [reflecting your spiritual condition] you will be justified and acquitted of the guilt of sin; and by your words [rejecting Me] you will be condemned and sentenced.”
  • Colossians 3:16 – Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
  • Colossians 4:6 – Let your speech at all times be gracious and pleasant, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how to answer each one [who questions you].
  • Ephesians 2:1-3 – And you [He made alive when you] were [spiritually] dead and separated from Him because of your transgressions and sins, in which you once walked. You were following the ways of this world [influenced by this present age], in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient [the unbelieving, who fight against the purposes of God]. Among these [unbelievers] we all once lived in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by the sinful self], indulging the desires of [a]human nature [without the Holy Spirit] and [the impulses] of the [sinful] mind. We were, by nature, children [under the sentence] of [God’s] wrath, just like the rest [of mankind].
  • Ephesians 4:25 – Therefore, rejecting all falsehood [whether lying, defrauding, telling half-truths, spreading rumors, any such as these], speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one another [and we are all parts of the body of Christ].
  • Ephesians 4:28 – The thief [who has become a believer] must no longer steal, but instead he must work hard [making an honest living], producing that which is good with his own hands, so that he will have something to share with those in need.
  • Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].
  • Luke 4:22 – And [as He continued on] they all were speaking well of Him, and were in awe and were wondering about the words of grace which were coming from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
  • Romans 3:13 – “Their throat is an open grave; They [habitually] deceive with their tongues.” “The venom of asps is beneath their lips.”
  • Romans 3:14 – “Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
  • Romans 3:19 – Now we know that whatever the Law [of Moses] says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that [the excuses of] every mouth may be silenced [from protesting] and that all the world may be held accountable to God [and subject to His judgment].
  • Romans 10:9–10 – because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.
  • Romans 15:6 – so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify and praise and honor the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 1 Peter 3:15 – But in your hearts set Christ apart [as holy—acknowledging Him, giving Him first place in your lives] as Lord. Always be ready to give a [logical] defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope and confident assurance [elicited by faith] that is within you, yet [do it] with gentleness and respect.

Today’s reading from the book of Job comes from chapter 13:

‘[Job continued:] “Behold, my eye has seen all this, My ear has heard and understood it. What you know I also know; I am not inferior to you. “But I wish to speak to the Almighty, And I desire to argue with God. But you smear me with lies [you defame my character most untruthfully]; You are all worthless physicians and have no remedy to offer. Oh, that you would be completely silent, And that silence would be your wisdom! Please hear my argument And listen to the pleadings of my lips. Will you speak what is unjust for God, And speak what is deceitful for Him? Will you show partiality for Him [and be unjust to me so that you may gain favor with Him]? Will you contend and plead for God? Will it be well for you when He investigates you [and your tactics against me]? Or will you deceive Him as one deceives a man? He will surely reprimand you If you secretly show partiality. Will not His majesty terrify you, And will not the dread of Him fall upon you? Your memorable sayings are [worthless, merely] proverbs of ashes; Your defenses are defenses of [crumbling] clay. “Be silent before me so that I may speak; And let happen to me what may. Why should I take my flesh in my teeth And put my life in my hands [incurring the wrath of God]? Even though He kills me; I will hope in Him. Nevertheless, I will argue my ways to His face. This also will be my salvation, For a godless man may not come before Him. Listen diligently to my speech, And let my declaration fill your ears. Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I will be vindicated. Who will argue and contend with me? For then I would be silent and die. “Only [O Lord,] do not do two things to me, And then I will not hide myself from Your face: Withdraw Your hand from me and remove this bodily suffering, And let not the dread of You terrify me. Then [Lord,] call, and I will answer; Or let me speak, and then reply to me. How many are my iniquities and sins [that so much sorrow should come to me]? Make me recognize and understand my transgression and my sin. Why do You hide Your face [as if offended] And consider me Your enemy? Will You cause a windblown leaf to tremble? Will You pursue the chaff of the dry stubble? For You write bitter things against me [in Your indictment] And make me inherit and suffer for the iniquities of my youth. As today’s reading begins we see that Job’s patience for his friends is starting to fade, we start with hearing how all they had discussed about God’s power and wisdom were not beyond Job but were things that he knows and understands because of what he has already seen and experienced. We see how Job then confronts them that he is not inferior to them when it comes to the things of God and how he didn’t like their condescending and unsympathetic words and tone. Job wasn’t put back by the arguments and attacks by his friends in his time of pain and suffering but instead was even more motivated to have an audience with God. Job wants to understand and reason with God what has taken place. Job first speaks out against his friends, the people who were to be his counsel, his advisers, his helpers with the fact that they would have been more helpful and seemed wiser had they not spoken at all aligning to the words from Proverbs which read:

Even a [callous, arrogant] fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips he is regarded as sensible (prudent, discreet) and a man of understanding.

Proverbs 17:28

We see through today’s reading that even in the midst of his pain and his suffering, that Job hadn’t lost his ability to reason and have wisdom. He wants his friends to listen more than they speak in order that they would be able to attend to what he has to say on his own behalf and hear his cries and conviction to God. We see how Job believes that God will reprimand and condemn them for their judgement and motives. We see how he is questioning their true friendship based on how they were treating him during such a low point in his life. We hear how Job is putting his trust in God rather than his friends. We see how just like in a court trial, Job presents his case before he hands it over to God in prayer. We see how in verse 17 he declares it. We see how in verse 18 he brings his cause and his confidence in God for his justification. We see how in verse 19 he speaks to how if he gave up his hope and his faith in God then who would be his salvation? We see how his belief in his own innocence was attached to his faith and if he gave up on one it would be like giving up on the other.

Job was done his rant and reply to his friends and we see how starting in verse 20 that Job starts to express regret or disappointment, to lament and please with God. We hear Job’s cry to God to meet with him in order to end his pain and stop the terror of the experiences he was going through. Job was more concerned with his relationship with God than the pain and suffering and wanted to ensure that his relationship with God, the God he loved and worshiped would be restored.

Today, we have the benefit of the full Bible that includes the New Testament and the hope of Jesus. Without the hope of the saving Jesus and the resurrection, Job still speaks in alignment to what was yet to come when it comes to man dying and buried. We see this in our concluding verse and what is still yet to come. This ailment was eating away at Job’s body like a moth eating away at a piece of clothing.

‘While I waste away like a rotten thing, Like a garment that is moth-eaten.’

Job 13:28

The New Testament speaks to us about the end of our time on earth with verses like:

13 Now we do not want you to be uninformed, believers, about those who are asleep [in death], so that you will not grieve [for them] as the others do who have no hope [beyond this present life]. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again [as in fact He did], even so God [in this same way—by raising them from the dead] will bring with Him those [believers] who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15 For we say this to you by the Lord’s [own] word, that we who are still alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede [into His presence] those [believers] who have fallen asleep [in death]. 16 For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the [a]archangel and with the [blast of the] trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain [on the earth] will simultaneously be caught up (raptured) together with them [the resurrected ones] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord!

And then I saw thrones, and sitting on them were those to whom judgment [that is, the authority to act as judges] was given. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had refused to worship the beast or his image, and had not accepted his mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead [the non-believers] did not come to life again until the thousand years were completed. So where are you at today? How will you respond to the offer from God of grace, mercy, and salvation? Are you ready to lean into all that God has for you? The Story of Job. – Day 17

Yesterday, even though our family wasn’t all together, even though our incredible friends and neighbors invited us to have Thanksgiving dinner with them, I am thankful because of the time with my kids where we went and saw a movie together (getting the early matinee showing of Playing with Fire) that had us laughing, crying, and ending on a happy note that connects with one of my families passions around living passionately. I am thankful because of the time at home for a little repose and then went out for dinner at a local restaurant in the area that had a special Thanksgiving 2019 menu that included prime rib for the kids and turkey dinner for me, with salads and appetizers along with apple pie a la mode for the kids. I was blessed and so thankful because of getting to spend so much time with them and even though I so wish my wife could have been with us. I am so thankful because of my wife’s heart and determination that things got setup for her mom so that we can have peace of mind with her being somewhere safe that will help her heal up and that it also means that my wife will be coming home today. God provides! God is good! God’s ways are not our ways, His ways are better and higher, and deeper than our ways. God gives us purpose! I am thankful!


GOD IS GOOD!

Today’s reading in our continuing study of Job comes from chapter 12:

‘Then Job responded, “No doubt you are the [only wise] people [in the world], And wisdom will die with you! But I have intelligence and understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these [of God’s wisdom and might]? I am a joke to my friends; I, one whom God answered when he called upon Him— A just and blameless man is a joke [and laughed to scorn]. He who is at ease has contempt for misfortune, But misfortune is ready [and anxiously waiting] for those whose feet slip. The tents of the destroyers prosper; And those who provoke God are [apparently] secure, Whom God brings into their power. “Now ask the animals, and let them teach you [that God does not deal with His creatures according to their character]; And ask the birds of the air, and let them tell you; Or speak to the earth [with its many forms of life], and it will teach you; And let the fish of the sea declare [this truth] to you. Who among all these does not recognize [in all these things that good and evil are randomly scattered throughout nature and human life] That the hand of the L ord has done this, In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind? “But [only] with Him are [perfect] wisdom and might; He [alone] has [true] counsel and understanding. Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt; He imprisons a man, and there can be no release. Behold, He restrains the waters, and they dry up; Again, He sends the waters out, and they overwhelm and devastate the earth. With Him are might and sound wisdom, The misled and the misleader are His [and in His power]. He makes [great and scheming] counselors walk barefoot And makes fools of judges. He loosens the bond of kings And binds their loins with a loincloth. He makes priests walk barefoot, And He overturns men firmly seated and secure. Job responds in his defense to what his friends had accused him. Job responds with confidence and firm words. Job was not impressed by the treatment of his friends and let them know it. Job knew that they weren’t the only people with wisdom because he knew that he trusted in God. Job wasn’t going to go it alone but instead would choose to pursue God, looking to Him for forgiveness, protection, and provision.

As we look into Job’s words, we discover that the ways of the people in the middle east can be very ironic and they can speak satirical sayings that are very cutting.

Today’s study bring another perspective in terms of intellect and wisdom vs emotions and feelings. Many today view intellect as in the head but emotions from the heart. We learn in today’s study how it was different back then that the heart was the seat of understanding whereas the gut feel (the σπλάγχνα splangchna – viscera, bowels) was more where the emotions and feelings came from.

We learn how Job doesn’t take the talking down to him but responds with the view that he is equal to them in quoting the sayings and familiar with their mode of reasoning and as such was equal to them. We learn how to some wisdom was the ability to memorize or store up proverbs and maxims and then be ready and able to apply them on any occasion.

We learn how Job was feeling like a joke, a fool, mockery, and a victim of ridicule. He was finding no sympathy for the pain he had been going through as well as no respect for his opinions. Today’s study even calls out how:

Job complains that he was not treated with due deference. They had showed no respect for his understanding and rank. They had urged the most common-place topics; advanced stale and trite apothegms, as if he had never heard them; dwelt on maxims familiar even to the meanest persons; and had treated him in this manner as if he were a mere child in knowledge. Thus, to be approached with vague common-places, and with remarks such as would be used in addressing children, he regarded as insult and mockery.

Barnes’ Notes – Job 12

As we look on the topic of feet slipping, the study speaks the following:

the idea is, that a man in adversity, when failing from a high condition of honor, is regarded as an almost extinguished lamp, that is now held in contempt, and is cast away. When the torch was blazing, it was regarded as of value; when nearly extinguished, it would be regarded as worthless, and would be cast away. So when a man was in prosperity, he would be looked up to as a guide and example. In adversity, his counsels would be rejected, and he would be looked upon with contempt. Nothing can be more certain or more common than the fact here adverted to. The rich and the great are looked up to with respect and veneration. Their words and actions have an influence which those of no other men have. When they begin to fall, others are willing to hasten their fall. Long cherished but secret envy begins to show itself; those who wish to rise rejoice in their ruin, and they are looked upon with contempt in proportion to their former honor, rank, and power. They are regarded as an extinguished torch – of no value, and are cast away.

Barnes’ Notes – Job 12

We learn how Job believes in God’s omnipotence. We learn about how the more viscous animals survive. We learn in today’s reading the definitions of wisdom, power, and sovereignty of God. In the midst of all of Job’s pain and suffering, he affirms how God’s power is visible everywhere.

Verses 12:13 – 13:3: This section gives vivid definition to the wisdom, power and sovereignty of God (verse 13). Job, despite his questions about his suffering, affirms that God’s power is visible in nature, human society, religious matters, and national and international affairs. Job, however, expressed this in terms of fatalistic despair. Job knew all this and it didn’t help (13:1-2); so he didn’t want to argue with them anymore, he wanted to take his case before God (verse 3).

Job 12:13 “With him [is] wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.” While his distress clouded this truth at times, Job knew deep down that God was the only reality in his life. This is speaking of God. He is the source of all wisdom and strength. God’s wisdom and understanding never changes. It is God who makes it possible for us to understand. It is His strength that makes it possible for us to do all things.

Job 12:14 “Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.” To wit, houses, castles, and cities, which God designed to destroy utterly. “He shutteth up”: If he will shut up a man in prison, or in any straits or troubles. “There can be no opening”: Without God’s permission and providence. God builds up and God tears down. This was never more evident than in the nation of Israel. God made Israel great. He made Solomon the richest man who had ever lived. He became unfaithful to God and God took the kingdom away from his family. Israel fell and was taken into captivity because of their unfaithfulness.

Job 12:15 “Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.” God, at his pleasure, causes great droughts, which are among the worst calamities that can happen. He withholds the blessed rain from heaven (Deut. 11:17; 1 Kings 8:35; 17:1), and the springs shrink, and the rivers dry up, and a fruitful land is turned into a desert. And famine stalks through the land, and men perish by thousands. “Also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth”: I.e. he causes the flooding. Once upon a time he overwhelmed the whole earth, and destroyed almost the entire race of mankind, by a deluge of an extraordinary character, which so fixed itself in the human consciousness, that traces of it are to be found in the traditions of almost all the various races of men. But, beside this great occasion, he also in ten thousand other cases, causes by means of floods; tremendous ruin and devastation, sweeping away crops and cattle, and even villages and cities. Sometimes even “overturning the earth,” causing lakes to burst, rivers to change their course, vast tracts of land to be permanently submerged, and the contour of coasts to be altered. All of nature is at God’s command. He brings great droughts and brings floods as he did in the time of Noah. God used the flood in Noah’s time to destroy the people of the earth, because of their great evil.

Job 12:16 “With him [is] strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver [are] his.” Rather (as in the Revised Version), with him is strength and effectual working. God has not only the wisdom to design the course of events (verse 13), but the power and ability to carry out all that he designs. “The deceived and the deceiver are his”: Not only does God rule the course of external nature, but also the doings of men. “Shall there be evil in a city, and shall not he have done it?” (Amos 3:6). He allows some to deceive, and others to be deceived. Moral evil is thus under his control, and, in a certain sense, may be called his doing. But it behooves men, when they approach such great mysteries, to be very cautious and wary in their speech. Job touches with somewhat too bold a hand the deepest problems of the universe. God not only plans the events of the earth, but He has the power within Himself to see that it is done. God rules people, as well as nature. He is the Creator of them all. The person who is deceived was made by God. The deceiver was created by God as well. All mankind is God’s creation. Only those who believe are His sons.

Verses 17-25: A series of action verbs point to God’s sovereignty. While no explanation is given for Job’s suffering, these terms underscore that no event or circumstance can affect God’s sovereign might and purpose.

Job 12:17 “He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.” The wise counsellors, or statesmen, by whom the affairs of kings and kingdoms are ordered, he leads away as captives in triumph. Being spoiled either of that wisdom which they had, or seemed to have; or of that power and dignity which they had enjoyed. “And maketh the judges fools”: By discovering their folly, and by infatuating their minds, and turning their own counsels to their ruin. The wise counsellors are earthly men, and they are still in the control of God. He can build them up or tear them down as He desires. The judges of the earth must remember that they will someday stand before the Judge of all the world. He judges in righteousness.

Job 12:18 “He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.” He takes from them the power and authority wherewith they ruled their subjects. Ruled them with rigor, perhaps tyrannized and enslaved them. And he divests them of that majesty which he had stamped upon them, and by which they kept their people in awe. These God can, and often does, take away from them, and thereby free the people from their bonds, of which we have abundance of instances in the history of different nations. “And girdeth their loins with a girdle”: He reduces them to a mean and servile condition. Which is thus expressed, because servants used to gird up their garments, (which, after the manner of those parts of the world, were loose and long), that they might be fitter for attendance upon their masters. He not only deposes them from their thrones, but brings them into slavery.

Job 12:19 “He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.” Rather, priests. In antiquity priests occupied influential places. Compare what is said of Melchizedek (Gen. 14; of Jethro, priest of Midian in Exodus 2:16). And of the influence of the priests in several crises of the history of Israel. On “spoiled” (see Job 12:17). “The mighty”: Literally the established or perennial. Being in apposition with priests, usually a hereditary class. The word describes those who occupied high permanent place among men. Kings are king, because God ordained it. When a king becomes evil, God may send another king to put him into captivity. It is God who looses him to greatness, or binds him as a common criminal. We saw this very thing in our study of Israel’s captivity in Babylon. God led the king of Babylon to take the king of Israel. Later on, God had another king to overthrow the king of Babylon.

Job 12:20 “He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.” God deprives trusted statesmen of their eloquence and destroys their reputation and their authority. “And taketh away the understanding of the aged”: He turns wise and aged men into fools and drivellers, weakening their judgments and reducing them to imbecility. Sometimes, God will take a powerful statesman and make him unable to speak. The aged are sometimes, turned into people with no understanding. The Alzheimer’s disease does this to many of the elderly.

Job 12:21 “He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.” I.e. he makes them contemptible to their subjects and others. “Weakeneth”: Hebrew, he looseth the girdle; which phrase signifies weakness (as Isa. 5:27); as the girding of the girdle notes strength and power (as Isa. 22:21; 45:5). Both these phrases being taken from the quality of their garments, which being loose and long, did disenable a man for travel or work. The king of Babylon was thought of as one of the mightiest men of the world, until the handwriting appeared on the wall condemning him and the city of Babylon. This of course, was the hand of God.

Job 12:22 “He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.” I.e. the most secret and crafty counsels of princes, which are contrived and carried on in the dark. “And bringeth out to light the shadow of death”: There is nothing secret which God cannot, if he choose, reveal. Nor is there anything hid which he cannot make known. Dark, murderous schemes, on which lies a shadow as of death, which men plan in secret, and keep hidden in their inmost thoughts, he can, and often does, cause to be brought to light and made manifest in the sight of all. Every such scheme, however carefully guarded and concealed, shall be one day made known (Matt. 10:26). Many are laid bare even in the lifetime of their devisers. There are no things planned by men that God does not know. They may have planned it in some secret place, but God knows all of their plans. Even plots to kill someone are known of God. Death was defeated for all believers, when Jesus rose from the grave. In that sense, death was defeated by the Light (Jesus Christ).

Job 12:23 “He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them [again].” In this discourse of God’s wonderful works, Job shows that whatever is done in this world both in the order and change of things, is by God’s will and appointment. In which he declares that he thinks well of God, and is able to set forth his power in words as they that reasoned against him were. What before he said of princes, he now applies to nations and people, whom God does either increase or diminish as he pleaseth. “He enlargeth the nations”: He multiplies them, so that they are forced to send forth colonies into other lands. “Straiteneth them again”: Or, leads them in, or brings them back, into their own land, and confines them there. Israel became almost three million people while they were slaves in Egypt. Just over seventy people went into Egypt and almost three million came out. This same three million were reduced to just a remnant by God for their unfaithfulness.

Job 12:24 “He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness [where there is] no way.” The word heart here evidently means mind, intelligence, and wisdom (see the notes at Job 12:3). “Of the chief of the people”: Hebrew “Heads of the people;” that is, of the rulers of the earth. The meaning is, that he leaves them to infatuated and distracted counsels. By withdrawing from them, he has power to frustrate their plans, and to leave them to an entire lack of wisdom (see the notes at Job 12:17). “And causeth them to wander in a wilderness”: They are like persons in a vast waste of pathless sands without a waymark, a guide, or a path. The perplexity and confusion of the great ones of the earth could not be more strikingly represented than by the condition of such a lost traveler. When the leader of the people is filled with confusion and wanders in the wilderness, they wander around as sheep without a shepherd.

Job 12:25 “They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like [a] drunken [man].” Like blind men, as the men of Sodom, when they were struck with blindness. Or “they grope”, or “feel the dark, and not light”, as the Targum. As the Egyptian did when such gross darkness was upon them as might be felt. “And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man”: That has lost his sight, his senses, and his feet, and knows not where he is, which way to go, or how to keep on his legs. But reels to and fro, and is at the utmost loss what to do. All this is said of the heads or chief of the people, in consequence of their hearts being taken away, and so left destitute of wisdom and strength. Those who walk in darkness have no direction in their lives. John 11:10 “But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.”

The Story of Job. – Day 16

As I start this day and consider all that I have to be thankful for, it starts with: FOR THE

  • My incredible wife – who is loving and caring and fits the bill of finding something good and who has helped me receive favor from the Lord.
  • My children – who are gifts from God. From my oldest daughter to my youngest daughter to my son. They are all blessing me by being 3 John 1:4 children and walking in the truth.
  • My extended family – my parents who raised me, my sister who grew up with me, my uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents who loved me
  • My friends – who grew up with me, who work with me, who put up with me, who go thru it with me
  • My church – that pointed me to Jesus, that showed me to serve, that showed me the love of God, that showed me to lead, that shows me
  • My job – where God positioned me for the second half of my life when he spoke Job 42:12 over it. With great managers and coworkers who are looking to make things better for people looking to make their own way through their own personal ventures.
  • My home where I get to spend time with and have gotten to raise my family
  • My incredible neighbors who have helped me to learn and grown living out in the country

This life isn’t always going to be easy but I can walk in the faith and the confidence of God’s Word and God’s promises. And EVEN THOUGH there are days where I feel like I am walking thru the valley of the shadow of death, I know I can fear no evil. EVEN THOUGH I couldn’t have my family together for thanksgiving this year, God has positioned us to be able to be where we need to be in order to accomplish His will and His purpose in and through the lives of others.

And I even take hold of the hard times. I remember those days when things were so tough and I grew bitter and wouldn’t forgive, but BECAUSE OF that I have learned the power of forgiveness and have been able to share that truth with so many others. BECAUSE OF the trials of betrayal and lies, I have learned how to forgive and share that truth with others going thru similar issues ever since.

Here is an opportunity given to me to share a Story Slam with my new workplace at the time and getting to share the power of forgiveness with them through my testimony.

I will get back into the book of Job’s text tomorrow but wanted to leave everything with a Happy Thanksgiving message not only FOR THE things God has given us but also EVEN THOUGH we had trials and troubles and especially BECAUSE OF what God was able to do in and through those times.

On Thanksgiving-eve, can you be thankful?


THE STORY OF JOB. – DAY 15

What if you had lost your possessions? What if you had lost your monetary worth? What if you had lost your children? What if you had lost your health? Could you still find a way to be thankful?

What if your friends started to judge you? What if your friends started to accuse you? What if your friends started to attack you? What if your friends started to try and shame you? What if your friends blamed you for something you didn’t do? Could you still find a way to be thankful?

Can you find hope in the midst of troubles? Can you find joy in the midst of trials? Can be thankful FOR THE things God has done in and through you? Can you be thankful EVEN THOUGH things haven’t always been easy? Can you be thankful BECAUSE OF the trials and tests and troubles, knowing that they will all work together for God because of your faith and trust in God?


Today’s reading of Job from God’s Word comes from Job 11:


‘Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said, “Shall a multitude of words not be answered? And should a talkative man [making such a long-winded defense] be acquitted? Should your boasts and babble silence men? And shall you scoff and no one put you to shame? For you have said, ‘My teaching (doctrine) [that God knowingly afflicts the righteous] is pure, And I am innocent in your eyes.’ But oh, that God would speak, And open His lips [to speak] against you, And [that He would] show you the secrets of wisdom! For sound wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God forgets a part of your wickedness and guilt. “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you [by searching] discover the limits of the Almighty [ascend to His heights, extend to His widths, and comprehend His infinite perfection]? His wisdom is as high as the heights of heaven. What can you do? It is deeper than Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead). What can you know? It is longer in measure [and scope] than the earth, And broader than the sea. If God passes by or arrests, Or calls an assembly [of judgment], who can restrain Him? [If He is against a man, who can call Him to account for it?] For He recognizes and knows false and worthless men, And He sees wickedness, will He not consider it? But a hollow (empty-headed) man will become intelligent and wise [Only] when the colt of a wild donkey is born as a man. “If you direct your heart [on the right path] And stretch out your hands to Him, If sin is in your hand, put it far away [from you], And do not let wrongdoing dwell in your tents; Then, indeed, you could lift up your face [to Him] without moral defect, And you would be firmly established and secure and not fear. For you would forget your trouble; You would remember it as waters that have passed by. And your life would be brighter than the noonday; Darkness [then] would be like the morning. Then you would trust [with confidence], because there is hope; You would look around you and rest securely. You would lie down with no one to frighten you, And many would entreat and seek your favor. But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And they will not escape [the justice of God]; And their hope is to breathe their last [and die].”’

Study Notes:

We see another one of Job’s friends step in today and look for an audience with God too, but unfortunately Zophah was wanted the audience in order for God to speak to Job’s iniquity and need to repent. We see how another close friend of Job decides to accuse Job that what he has been going through must be in retaliation to something he had done wrong. As with Job’s other friend who spoke, Zophah is trying to get Job to repent without realizing the reality of the situation. Just as the disciples ask Jesus who sinned to make the man blind from birth, Job’s friends are assuming guilt because of the struggles Job has been going through. Zophah gets started with rebuke · reprimand · reproach · admonishment · admonition · reproval · remonstration · disapproval · disapprobation · criticism · censure · blame · condemnation · fault-finding · telling-off · rap over the knuckles · slap on the wrist · dressing down · blast · ticking off · wigging · serve · rating · reprehension and censure · criticism · castigation · stricture · denunciation · damnation · vilification · opprobrium · reproof · disapproval · disapprobation · flak · a bad press · reprobation · arraignment · excoriation · objurgation. We know from the Bible that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. We also know that God convicts us out of love unlike Satan who condemns in order to destroy. Zophah starts out with the assumption that for all this to have happened that Job is guilty. Zophah then goes on to name call Job a talker, a liar, and a mocker. Zophah takes Job’s claim of integrity and twists it by going to the extreme that Job was really saying he was sinless and then Zophah attacked him for it. Zophah wouldn’t stop there, he alleges that not only was Job guilty and unrepentant but also an empty talker, with all that hot air he was spouting off about his innocence and God’s apparent injustice was enough that Zophah would have to speak up and take a stand. Even though Job had earlier acknowledged his sin while maintaining his innocence, Zophah had to respond and retaliate.

As I consider this and ponder this, the words “vengeance is mine says the Lord” come to mind in that we shouldn’t and don’t need to be judging others about things we don’t know and we don’t understand because God won’t be fooled nor mocked and He is able to take care of things himself without our need to judge and accuse. Let’s not fall into the first response being to accuse or assume, let’s make our first response to turn to God for wisdom and discernment how He would choose to use us in the midst of a friends troubles and trials? We need to be considering how when we point at someone there are other fingers pointing back at ourselves and we need to be checking our own lives and hearts and take responsibility and accountability for our own lives. We need to be looking in the mirror and considering what do we need to be doing about our own lives to get more aligned with God’s will and purpose and plan. Receiving Jesus gives us salvation, but God’s plan is that we will have life and life more abundantly and so we need to be move forward from that starting point in alignment with His purpose, plan, and will in order to walk into all the good He has planned for our lives, even in the midst of the trials and troubles.

As we get to verse 5 and following, we learn in today’s study how the words being spoken by Zophah to Job were not helpful but hurtful, they would be helpful if it had been a self-reflection to himself, but in the position Job was in the words brought little to no value.

Verses 5-6: Pastor and scholar Andrew W. Blackwood wrote about this passage, “Such a remark might have considerable value if spoken while looking into the mirror. But from a man who is not suffering, to a man who is suffering, this remark is cruel and utterly without any value at all.”

Job 11:5 “But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;” Plead with thee according to thy desire: he would soon put thee to silence. We are commonly ready, with great assurance, to interest God in our quarrels. But they are not always in the right who are most forward to appeal to his judgment, and prejudge it against their antagonists.

Job 11:6 “And that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom, that [they are] double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee [less] than thine iniquity [deserveth].” “Secrets of wisdom”: Job would have been much wiser if he had only known the unknowable secret of God; in this case the scene in heaven between God and Satan would have clarified everything. But Job couldn’t know the secret wisdom of God (verses 7-9). Zophar should have applied his point to himself. If God’s wisdom was so deep, high, long and broad, how was it that he could understand it and have all the answers? Like his friends, Zophar thought he understood God and reverted to the same law of retaliation, the sowing and reaping principle, to again indict Job. He implied that Job was wicked (verses 10-11), and thought he was wise, thought actually he was out of control as if he were a “wild donkey” (verse 12). As terrible as the attack of Satan had been on Job, Zophar felt that it was not enough for the sins of Job. Zophar wanted God to speak out loud and condemn Job, where they could all hear it. In God is all Wisdom and Truth. Zophar was saying to Job, that he had no wisdom. He thought if Job had been wise, he would have repented of his sins by now.

Job 11:7 “Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?” Literally, can you attain to the searching out of God? Can you suppose, that is, that whatever your wisdom, learning, subtlety, sagacity, power of insight, you will be able to search out and fully know the character, attributes, modes of thought and actions of the Most High? No. In one sense, all men do well to profess themselves “Agnostics”. Not that they can know nothing of God, but that they can never know him fully and never exhaust the knowledge of him. As the apostle says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God”! “how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?” (Rom. 11:33-34). “Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?” Rather. Can you attain to the perfection of the Almighty? Understand, i.e., his inconceivable perfectness. He was asking Job if he thought that he really could know God? He was saying that the wisdom and knowledge of Job would not help him to know God. He was telling Job, that in no way could he measure up to the expectations of the Almighty God. Zophar was a tormenter, not a comforter.

Job 11:8 “[It is] as high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” Literally, the heights of the heavens; what can you do? But the meaning is probably that expressed in the Authorized Version. God’s perfectness is unattainable by man’s thought, as the heights of the heavens are by his feet. Deeper than hell; literally, than Sheol, or the receptacle of the dead (see comment on Job 10:21). Paul speaks of the “deep things,” or rather, “the depths” of God (see 1 Cor. 2:10). “What canst thou know? How small a part of the Divine nature can any man thoroughly comprehend and know!

Job 11:9 “The measure thereof [is] longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.” Length is generally ascribed to the earth, and width to the sea. The ends of the earth are used for a great distance, and the sea is called the great and wide sea (see Psalm 72:1). But God and his perfections, particularly his wisdom and understanding, are infinite (Psalm 147:5). And will admit of no dimensions; as his love, so his wisdom, has a height which cannot be reached, a depth that cannot be fathomed, and a length and breadth immeasurable (see Eph. 3:18). From hence it appears that God is omniscient, omnipresent, and incomprehensible; and since he is to be found in Christ, and in him only, it is in vain for us to seek for him elsewhere. Next the sovereignty of God is spoken of. This was speaking of the perfection of the Almighty filling the earth and the seas. The following Scripture says it best.

Job Chapter 11 Study

Ever had someone throw your words back in your face and use them in the totally opposite way? We see starting in Job 11:10 how Zophah does just that.

Verses 10-12: In his rhetorical question in 9:12, Job had compared his own cries to the braying of a wild donkey (6:5). Here, Zophar echoes his question but draws the opposite conclusion and accuses Job of being foolish and “empty-headed” (Psalms 10:14: 39:5).

Job 11:10 “If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?” Namely, a person or family. “And shut up”: In prison, or in the hands of an enemy, or in the net of affliction and trouble (Psalm 66:11). “Or gather together”: Make our condition straight and narrow, as some interpret it. Or, gather together as tares to the fire, or gather to himself man’s breath and spirit (Job 34:14). “Then who can hinder him? From doing what he pleases with his creatures? Who can either block the sentence, or oppose the execution? Who can control his power or arraign his wisdom and justice? If he, who made all out of nothing, thinks fit to reduce all to nothing; if he that separated between light and darkness, dry land and sea at first, is pleased to gather them together again. If he that made, think proper to unmake, who can turn him; alter his mind, or stay his hand, or impede or impeach his proceedings? The answer of course, was no one, not even Satan. We must keep remembering that God gave Satan permission to do this to Job. This was in no way a punishment on Job for sins. This was a proving to Satan and to the on-looking angels that Job was truly a righteous man, and that nothing Satan could do to him would change that.

Job 11:11 “For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider [it]?” Though men know but little of God, and therefore are very unfit judges of his counsels and actions, yet God knows man exactly. He knows that every man in the world is guilty of much vanity and folly, and therefore sees sufficient reason for his severity against the best men. “He seeth wickedness also”: He perceives the wickedness of evil men, though it be covered with the veil of religion. “Will he not then consider it?” Shall he only see it as an idle spectator, and not observe it as a judge to punish it? The worst of this was that Zophar was accusing Job of being vain in his own conceit. He was saying that Job had been pretending to be a Godly man, but was not faithful to God in his heart.

Job 11:12 “For vain man would be wise, though man be born [like] a wild ass’s colt.” Man, who since the fall is void of all true wisdom, pretends to be wise, and able to pass a censure upon all God’s ways and works. “Born like a wild ass’s colt”: Ignorant, dull, and stupid, as to divine things, and yet heady and untraceable. Such is man by his birth; this evil is now natural and hereditary, and therefore common to all men. Of consequence it is not strange, if Job partake of the common distemper. Zophar believed that the troubles which had come to Job was because he was vain and puffed up with pride. Zophar believed they came on Job to cause him to repent.

Job Chapter 11 Study

With Zophah’s assumption of Job being a sinner, He points to God’s power of forgiveness if Job will be willing to confess his sin and repent. We learn how Zophah seemed to believe God worked on a tit for tat type of a system or that you get something from God because you first gave God something. But the earth is the Lord’s and everything it, there is nothing we can give God that He doesn’t already have.

We know that isn’t how God’s economy works. We know that isn’t how God works. We know that even simply through the example of Jesus who while we were yet sinners, He died for us. God didn’t wait for us to be good enough, clean enough, smart enough, … He knew that the only way to make a way was to take things into His own hands and hence the ultimate sacrifice, once for all, made a way when there didn’t seem to be a way.

We learn as we start in verse 13 how Zophah continues with the message to Job with the conclusion that his sin would lead to his death.

Verses 13-20: Zophar continues to assume that Job is a sinner but reminds him that God will forgive his sin upon his confession and repentance. Zophar asserted that God operates on the basis of “You give Me something, and I will give you something.” But God does not operate this way. His creation has nothing to give Him that is worth any value (Isa. 64:6).

Verses 13-14: Zophar started out this section speaking directly to Job, “If thou prepare …” and concluded speaking proverbially, “But the “eyes of the wicked …”. In so doing Zophar avoided directly calling Job wicked, but succeeded with ever greater force by being indirect. In the end, he told Job that his sin would bring about his death.

Job 11:13 “If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;” Thy business, O Job, is not to quarrel with thy Maker, or his works. But to address thyself to him by prayer and supplication, sincerely repenting of all your hard speeches, and other sins against God, and seeking him with a pure and upright heart; without which your prayers will be in vain. “Stretch out thine hands”: I.e. pray, which is here described by its usual gesture (as Job 15:25; Psalm 88:9). “Towards him”: I.e. to God, as appears both from the nature of the thing, and from the context.

Job 11:14 “If iniquity [be] in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.” If you have in your hand, or possession, any goods gotten by injustice or oppression, as it seems they supposed he had. Or, he means more generally, if you allow yourself in any sinful practices, the hand being put for action, whereof it is the instrument. “Put it far away”: Keep yourself at a great distance, not only from such actions, but also from the very occasions and appearances of them. “Let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles”: That is, in thy habitation, either in thyself or in thy family. Whose sins Job was obliged, as far as he could, to prevent or reform, as it seems he had done (Job 1:5). He said, tabernacles, because anciently the habitations of great men consisted of several tents or tabernacles. He was giving Job advice here. He wanted Job to put his wickedness far from him, so that God would hear his plea for forgiveness.

Job 11:15 “For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear:” With cheerfulness and holy boldness. “Without spot”: Having a clear and unspotted conscience. “Yea, thou shalt be steadfast”: Shall have a strong and comfortable assurance of God’s favor, and shalt be settled, without any fear of losing thy happiness. After Job had driven his iniquity out of his life, then he could look to heaven and to God for help. He reminded Job that if he was steadfast in the LORD, he had nothing to fear.

Job 11:16 “Because thou shalt forget [thy] misery, [and] remember [it] as waters [that] pass away:” Thy happiness shall be so great that it shall blot out the remembrance of thy past miseries. “And remember it as waters that pass away”: Remember it no more than men remember either a land-flood, which, as it comes, so it goes away suddenly and leaves few or no marks or memorials behind it. Or the waters of a river, which pass by in constant succession. Zophar believed that if Job would repent, his troubles would go away and he would remember them no more. It would be gone as the water passes away.

Job 11:17 “And [thine] age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.” Literally, shall arise above the noonday; i.e. “exceed it in splendor.” Instead of the “thick darkness” to which Job is looking forward (Job 10:21-22). He shall bask in a light brighter than that of the sun at noon. “Thou shalt shine forth”: The Hebrew cannot possibly bear this meaning. The uncommon word used is allied with “obscurity”, and if a verb should mean “thou shalt be obscure,” rather than “thou shalt shine forth.” But it is perhaps a substantive, meaning “darkness;” and the translation of the Revised Version is perhaps correct: “Though there be darkness.” “Thou shalt be as the morning”: “Thy light,” as Professor Lee explains, “shall gradually rise and expand itself far and wide.” It shall dispel the darkness, and take its place,” shining more and more unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18). Zophar was saying if Job would do as he had suggested, he would not face the darkness of the grave and hell. He would bask in the Light of the LORD which was greater than the noonday sun. He would be renewed in the LORD.

Job 11:18 “And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig [about thee, and] thou shalt take thy rest in safety.” From coming into like darkness, difficulties, and distress again, and from every evil and enemy. Nothing shall come nigh to disturb and hurt, nothing to be feared from any quarter, all around: or “shalt be confident”. Have a strong faith and full assurance of it, in the love of God, in the living Redeemer, and in the promises which respect the life that now is, and that which is to come. “Because there is hope”: Of the mercy of God, of salvation by Christ, and of eternal glory and happiness, as well as of a continuance of outward prosperity. Faith and hope mutually assist each other. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and hope of better and future things on a good foundation encourages faith and confidence. “Yea, thou shalt dig about thee”: To let in stakes for the pitching and fixing of tents to dwell in, and for more commodious pasturage. Or for wells of water, for the supply both of the family and the flocks. Or rather, for ditches and trenches to secure from thieves and robbers, or for drains to carry off floods of water. “And thou shalt take thy rest in safety”: Lie down on the bed and sleep in the night season in peace and quietness, having nothing to fear. Being well entrenched, and secure from plundering and flooding. And, more especially, being hedged about and protected by the power and providence of God (see Psalm 3:5). The Targum is, “thou shall prepare a grave, and lie down, and sleep secure.” Zophar was saying something that really would happen to Job after he was restored. It was not something that Zophar really wanted for Job however. He said this to remind Job of the wonders of how it used to be. Job’s hope was not in what Zophar had said, or not said, but in the LORD.

Job 11:19 “Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make [thee] afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.” Either lie down on his bed, as before, or by his flocks, and where they lie down, and none should disturb him or them. Not thieves and robbers, such as the Chaldeans and Sabeans had been to him, nor lions, bears, or wolves. “Yea, many shall make suit unto thee”: Make their supplications, present their requests and petitions for relief under necessitous circumstances, or for protection from the injuries and insults of others. As the poor and needy, the widow and fatherless, had done to him in times past, when in his prosperity, and when he was a friend unto them, and the father of them (see Prov. 19:6). Or, “the great ones shall make suit to thee”; to have his favor and friendship, his counsel and advice, his company and conversation. He should be applied unto and courted by men of all sorts, which would be no small honor to him (see Psalm 45:12). When Job was restored, there would be no warring parties from his neighbors. Instead of stealing from Job, they would be bringing things to him. Again, this was not what Zophar wished for Job, but it was what would happen.

Job 11:20 “But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope [shall be as] the giving up of the ghost.” Or be consumed. Either with grief and fears for their sore calamities; or with long looking for what they shall never attain, as this phrase is taken (Psalm 69:3; Jer. 14:6; Lam. 4:17). And this shall be thy condition; O Job, if thou persist in thine impiety. “They shall not escape”: They shall never obtain deliverance out of their distresses, but shall perish in them. “As the giving up of the ghost”: I.e. shall be as vain and desperate as the hope of life is in a man, when he is at the very point of death. Or, as a puff of breath, which is gone in a moment without all hopes of recovery. Zophar was speaking this, as if it was the fate of Job. In reality, he was speaking of himself and what would come to him, because he had spoken evil of Job. He was saying that Job had no other hope, but death. He would be needing the prayers of Job to save himself from the fate he just spoke of Job.

The Story of Job. – Day 14


Ever wondered why? Ever gone looking for answers? Ever questioned the reason or the logic? Ever questioned the intentions or the purpose? Ever asked for an explanation? Ever questioned the perspective?

What is keeping your spirits up? What is keeping your keep going attitude? Is it God’s divine care? Is it God’s supervision? Is it God’s gift of life? Is it God’s loving kindness?

We don’t know the reasons but we do know that by being believers that:

‘And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. ‘

Romans 8:28

Imagine a life that is without the knowledge of Jesus. Imagine a life that is unaware of who God really is. Imagine a life that is void of the truth of God.

So even in the midst of the trials and the troubles, the challenges and the struggles, lets let our lives shine for God and allow our faith and hope and love overflow in order that others would see when we come out the other side how great our God is. Let’s be more than just an attitude of gratitude and be thankful FOR THE. Let’s step it up to even be more than the EVEN THOUGH gratitude and thankfulness. Let’s press on into being thankful when we are in the midst of it all and thank God BECAUSE OF what we are going through, because we can take hold of Romans 8:28 and know that in and through all of this will be for good. Don’t lose hope, keep your trust in God! Don’t lose faith, keep your trust in God! Don’t lose your will to persevere, keep your trust in God and consider it all pure joy when we face trials of many kinds so that through the process we will get to the end with God’s work being complete so that we will persevere and be complete and lacking nothing!


Today’s reading comes from Job 10:

‘“I am disgusted with my life and loathe it! I will give free expression to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me [and declare me guilty]! Show me why You contend and argue and struggle with me. Does it indeed seem right to You to oppress, To despise and reject the work of Your hands, And to look with favor on the schemes of the wicked? Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as a man sees? Are Your days as the days of a mortal, Are Your years as man’s years, That You seek my guilt And search for my sin? Although You know that I am not guilty or wicked, Yet there is no one who can rescue me from Your hand. ‘Your hands have formed and made me altogether. Would You [turn around and] destroy me? Remember now, that You have made me as clay; So will You turn me into dust again? Have You not poured me out like milk And curdled me like cheese? [You have] clothed me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews. You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your providence (divine care, supervision) has preserved my spirit. Yet these [present evils] You have hidden in Your heart [since my creation]: I know that this was within You [in Your purpose and thought]. If I sin, then You would take note and observe me, And You would not acquit me of my guilt. If I am wicked, woe to me [for judgment comes]! And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head. For I am sated and filled with disgrace and the sight of my misery. Should I lift my head up, You would hunt me like a lion; And again You would show Your marvelous power against me. You renew Your witnesses against me And increase Your indignation and anger toward me; Hardship after hardship is with me [attacking me time after time]. ‘Why then did You bring me out of the womb? Would that I had perished and no eye had seen me! I should have been as though I had not existed; [I should have been] carried from the womb to the grave.’ Would He not let my few days alone, Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer Before I go—and I shall not return— To the land of darkness and the deep shadow [of death], The [sunless] land of utter gloom as darkness itself , [The land] of the shadow of death, without order, And [where] it shines as [thick] darkness.”’

We see as today’s reading begins that Job identifies himself as not wicked. We also see him using that innocence to start accusing God. We see how Job even starts to speak out in a flippant , flip , glib , frivolous , tongue-in-cheek , waggish , whimsical , joking , jokey , jesting , jocular , playful , roguish , impish , teasing , arch , mischievous , puckish , in fun , in jest , witty , amusing , funny , droll , comic , comical , chucklesome , lighthearted , high-spirited , bantering , frolicsome , sportive , jocose way. We see how it is even somewhat acerbically, acrimoniously, bitingly, caustically, maliciously, sneeringly speaks out. He asks if God is seeing thru human eyes, like his friends were, his spiritual condition. Job knew that God is the ultimate authority and so the decision would have to come from Him. We know because we saw how this all got started that it is the devil that is testing Job in an attempt to get Job to curse God. We know because we read in the beginning the limitations as well as permission that had to be given by God for this to even take place. But that hasn’t been revealed and so neither Job nor his friends can realize the purpose or the plan of God in and through this. Job’s friends similar to the disciples base their questions and their questions and reasons on what those in the past had said or expressed. The disciples learned from Jesus how their initial thoughts were wrong when He shared the reality of why the man was born blind and it wasn’t because of guilt but it was rather in order to show God’s glory to the world.

We learn in our reading how instead of cursing God, Job questions what the purpose of him even being born was, why was he alive. We learn through Job’s Word how incredible creation of man is and how it begins at conception. Job was unable to understand all the time and effort to create him, care for him, and then to put him thru all of this and destroy him and so questioned it. His expression is very similar to Psalm 119:73 which says “Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands”. Our life is finite and we came from the dust and will return to it. His comparison to milk which given time curdles and is thrown out points to his uncertainty and questions. We see how he compares that with the creation that takes place in the womb in the forming of a person.

Through it all we learn:

‘You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your providence (divine care, supervision) has preserved my spirit. ‘

Job 10:12

And yet, Job questions or wonders if this testing wasn’t something God had planned in His divine purpose.

‘Yet these [present evils] You have hidden in Your heart [since my creation]: I know that this was within You [in Your purpose and thought]. ‘

Job 10:13

With what Job was going through, we learn how he is asking God for a peaceful journey to death.

‘Would He not let my few days alone, Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer Before I go—and I shall not return— To the land of darkness and the deep shadow [of death], The [sunless] land of utter gloom as darkness itself , [The land] of the shadow of death, without order, And [where] it shines as [thick] darkness.”’

Job 10:20-22

The Story of Job. – Day 13


Arbitrator vs Intercessor? Do you have one?

Do you have an arbitrator between you and God? Do you think one exists? Do you have someone who can be your adjudicator · arbiter · judge · umpire · referee · assistant referee · linesman · line judge · mediator · conciliator · intervenor · intercessor · go-between · negotiator · peacemaker? Do you have an intercessor between you and God? Do you think one exists? Do you have someone who can be your mediator · moderator · go-between · negotiator · middleman · intermediary · intervenor · interceder · arbitrator · arbiter · conciliator · reconciler · broker · honest broker · petitioner · supplicant · liaison officer · peacemaker? Have you heard of Jesus? Have you met Jesus? Have you had an encounter with Jesus? Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for me and all the believers. Is He interceding for you too? Do you believe?

Ever tried to debate or argue about something you know little about? Ever tried to prove a point that you didn’t have all the facts on? Did it happen out of hopelessness or despair? Did it happen out of pride or arrogance? How will you know the truth? How will you find the truth? Do you realize that it is the truth that will set you free?

Today’s reading from God’s Word from Job 9 starts with an interesting case that has Job saying that there is no arbitrator between God and man. We will all one day come before the judgment seat of God to give an answer for the life we live and it will have an impact on our next steps. Believing in Jesus gives us eternal life with God and how we have decided to steward our life will impact our role or responsibilities then.


For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Today’s reading from Job 9:

‘Then Job answered and said, “Yes, I know it is true. But how can a mortal man be right before God? If one should want to contend or dispute with Him, He could not answer Him once in a thousand times . God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; Who has [ever] defied or challenged Him and remained unharmed? It is God who removes the mountains, and they do not know it, When He overturns them in His anger; Who shakes the earth out of its place, And its pillars tremble; Who commands the sun, and it does not shine; Who seals up the stars [from view]; Who alone stretches out the heavens And tramples down the waves of the sea; Who made [the constellations] the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the [vast starry] spaces of the south; Who does great things, [beyond understanding,] unfathomable, Yes, marvelous and wondrous things without number. Behold, He passes by me, and I do not see Him; He moves past me, but I do not perceive Him. Behold, He snatches away; who can restrain or turn Him back? If it is not He, then who is it [that is responsible for all this injustice]? “Now my days are swifter than a runner; They vanish, they see no good. They pass by like the [swift] boats made of reeds, Like an eagle that swoops down on its prey. If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my sad appearance, and be cheerful and brighten up,’ I am afraid of all my pains and worries [yet to come]; I know that You will not acquit me and leave me unpunished. I am accounted wicked and held guilty; Why then should I labor in vain [to appear innocent]? If I were to wash myself with snow And cleanse my hands with lye, You would still plunge me into the pit, And my own clothes would hate me [and refuse to cover my foul body]. For God is not a [mere] man, as I am, that I may answer Him, That we may go to court and judgment together. There is no arbitrator between us, Who could lay his hand upon us both [would that there were]. Let Him take His rod away from me, And let not the dread and fear of Him terrify me. Then I would speak [my defense] and not fear Him; But I am not like that in myself.’

In Job’s pain and despair, he starts to question or seek a mediator to help his questions to God. Job was looking for answers to the injustice of the pain and suffering he was going thru. We read in today’s chapter from Job, how Job felt futility about being vindicated in the midst of his righteousness and having done nothing wrong. Job realized that he was unable to argue or discuss with God or even understand God’s ways and wonders if he can depend on God. We learn as we read as Job references the sea which was viewed as “a force of evil” back then whereas the stars were worshiped by some. Job realizes that the focus needs to be on the creator not the created, how God’s greatness and wisdom would ensure God’s victory even against a case with man. We learn how Job is willing to pray to God and ask God for help, but he wouldn’t argue with God. God’s will and way are perfect and unchangeable. We learn about the despair of the day for Job as painful as they were. We learn how Job feels that in the midst of all of this, even if Job put on a happy face or put on a happy mood, it would be fake and would be held against him. Job speaks to how God must have found him guilty and so what’s the point of going on or trying to prove otherwise. We see how bad it has gotten for Job that he was losing all hope and falling into deeper despair. So Job declares that there is no arbitrator who could stand between him and God who would be able to bring this situation to a resolution. He would like to find an advocate, an arbitrator, an umpire, or a referee to help in this situation but could not find someone to help find him justice.


Where are you at today? Are you looking for an advocate, an arbitrator, an umpire, or a referee for your life? Do you realize that God realized that we couldn’t do it on our own and so He sent His one and only Son Jesus? Do you realize that when Jesus ascended back up to heaven that He didn’t leave us alone, He sent the Holy Spirit? Do you realize the names we have for them both?

  • Author of Scripture: (2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16) The Bible is inspired, literally “God-breathed,” by the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity. The Spirit moved the authors of all 66 books to record exactly what He breathed into their hearts and minds. As a ship is moved through the water by wind in its sails, so the biblical writers were borne along by the Spirit’s impulse.
  • Comforter / Counselor / Advocate: (Isaiah 11:2; John 14:16; 15:26; 16:7) All three words are translations of the Greek parakletos, from which we get “Paraclete,” another name for the Spirit. When Jesus went away, His disciples were greatly distressed because they had lost His comforting presence. But He promised to send the Spirit to comfort, console, and guide those who belong to Christ. The Spirit also “bears witness” with our spirits that we belong to Him and thereby assures us of salvation.
  • Convicter of Sin: (John 16:7-11) The Spirit applies the truths of God to men’s own minds in order to convince them by fair and sufficient arguments that they are sinners. He does this through the conviction in our hearts that we are not worthy to stand before a holy God, that we need His righteousness, and that judgment is certain and will come to all men one day. Those who deny these truths rebel against the conviction of the Spirit.
  • Deposit / Seal / Earnest: (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; Ephesians 1:13-14) The Holy Spirit is God’s seal on His people, His claim on us as His very own. The gift of the Spirit to believers is a down payment on our heavenly inheritance, which Christ has promised us and secured for us at the cross. It is because the Spirit has sealed us that we are assured of our salvation. No one can break the seal of God.
  • Guide: (John 16:13) Just as the Spirit guided the writers of Scripture to record truth, so does He promise to guide believers to know and understand that truth. God’s truth is “foolishness” to the world, because it is “spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). Those who belong to Christ have the indwelling Spirit who guides us into all we need to know in regard to spiritual matters. Those who do not belong to Christ have no “interpreter” to guide them to know and understand God’s Word.
  • Indweller of Believers: (Romans 8:9-11; Ephesians 2:21-22; 1 Corinthians 6:19) The Holy Spirit resides in the hearts of God’s people, and that indwelling is the distinguishing characteristic of the regenerated person. From within believers, He directs, guides, comforts, and influences us, as well as producing in us the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). He provides the intimate connection between God and His children. All true believers in Christ have the Spirit residing in their hearts.
  • Intercessor: (Romans 8:26) One of the most encouraging and comforting aspects of the Holy Spirit is His ministry of intercession on behalf of those He inhabits. Because we often don’t know what or how to pray when we approach God, the Spirit intercedes and prays for us. He intercedes for us “with wordless groans,” so that when we are oppressed and overwhelmed by trials and the cares of life, He comes alongside to lend assistance as He sustains us before the throne of grace.
  • Revealer / Spirit of Truth: (John 14:17; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:12-16) Jesus promised that, after the resurrection, the Holy Spirit would come to “guide you into all truth.” Because of the Spirit in our hearts, we are able to understand truth, especially in spiritual matters, in a way that non-Christians cannot. In fact, the truth the Spirit reveals to us is “foolishness” to them, and they cannot understand it. But we have the mind of Christ in the Person of His Spirit within us.
  • Spirit of God / the Lord / Christ: (Matthew 3:16; 2 Corinthians 3:17; 1 Peter 1:11) These names remind us that the Spirit of God is indeed part of the triune godhead and that He is just as much God as the Father and the Son. He is first revealed to us at the creation, when He was “hovering over the waters,” denoting His part in creation, along with that of Jesus who “made all things” (John 1:1-3). We see this same Trinity of God again at Jesus’ baptism, when the Spirit descends on Jesus and the voice of the Father is heard.
  • Spirit of Life: (Romans 8:2) The phrase “Spirit of life” means the Holy Spirit is the one who produces or gives life, not that He initiates salvation, but rather that He imparts newness of life. When we receive eternal life through Christ, the Spirit provides the spiritual food that is the sustenance of the spiritual life. Here again, we see the triune God at work. We are saved by the Father through the work of the Son, and that salvation is sustained by the Holy Spirit.
  • Teacher: (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13) Jesus promised that the Spirit would teach His disciples “all things” and bring to their remembrance the things He said while He was with them. The writers of the New Testament were moved by the Spirit to remember and understand the instructions Jesus gave for the building and organizing of the Church, the doctrines regarding Himself, the directives for holy living, and the revelation of things to come.
  • Witness: (Romans 8:16; Hebrews 2:4; 10:15) The Spirit is called “witness” because He verifies and testifies to the fact that we are children of God, that Jesus and the disciples who performed miracles were sent by God, and that the books of the Bible are divinely inspired. Further, by giving the gifts of the Spirit to believers, He witnesses to us and the world that we belong to God.

It is amazing what we can learn from the past. We can choose to either learn from it or be doomed to repeat it.

Thanksgiving … It’s not just a day and it’s not just an attitude!


Today there was a great sermon message speaking to being thankful. It spoke of three stages of thankfulness and many biblical examples of how they can and have been applied. Thanksgiving is to be something we do all the time, continually, in all our ways, in all circumstances. Thanksgiving is something we should have because we allow the peace of Christ be the controlling factor in our hearts.

The Grumble Free Year – imagine that. Imagine the experiment which was written and shared thru The Grumble-Free Year: Twelve Months, Eleven Family Members, and One Impossible Goal (Book by Tricia Goyer).


Complaining and grumbling come naturally, no need to teach or train how to do that. Sometime it becomes so common place in our lives that we diminish the affect it has on the relationships around us by driving a wedge between us and who or whatever we are complaining about it. It also is something that affects and offense to God. Everyday God gives everything we need. We have new mercies every morning from God. Imagine the impact of grumbling on an 11 day trip to the promised land became 4 decades of wandering in the desert.

‘The L ord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “How long shall I put up with this evil congregation who murmur [in discontent] against Me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, which they are making against Me. Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the L ord , ‘just what you have spoken in My hearing I will most certainly do to you; your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness, even all who were numbered of you, your entire number from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against Me. Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, not one of you shall enter the land in which I swore [an oath] to settle you. ‘

Numbers 14:26-30

Just because you think you are grumbling against others doesn’t mean that it isn’t being heard or offensive to God. Don’t you want to give God the glory He so deserves? Grumbling and complaining it keeps us out of the promises God has for us. It is important to not only try to change our attitude without starting in the heart but it doesn’t end there.

Gratitude and thankfulness take practice and efforts. How can we grow and develop in this area? After the 40 years and the new generation is getting ready to enter into the promised land, we see how Moses speaks to them to not forget what God has done for you.

‘When you have eaten and are satisfied, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you. ‘

Deuteronomy 8:10

Consider these words of Moses as the people were about to enter into the promised land: “FOR THE

This is the basic level of gratitude. Looking back and giving God thanks for the blessings He has already given into your life. Thanksgiving begins in the heart.

Inward grumbling can still be known and heard by God! Can you be thankful for what you have, for the abilities you have, for the time, for the provision.

‘Bless and affectionately praise the Lord , O my soul, And all that is [deep] within me, bless His holy name. Bless and affectionately praise the Lord , O my soul, And do not forget any of His benefits; Who forgives all your sins, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you [lavishly] with lovingkindness and tender mercy; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the [soaring] eagle. ‘

Psalms 103:1-5

We need to look back and be thankful. We need to share and learn of the stories of what God has done so that we can not only be thankful but also share reasons to be thankful. Don’t stop at this level.

Consider the words of David in the midst of the valley: “EVEN THOUGH

‘Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord .’

Psalms 23:4-6

We can now take our gratitude to the next level, EVEN THOUGH. David is thanking God even though he is in a dark time in his life, even though he is walking thru a valley, even though his enemies are after him. What might try to get you ungrateful, discourage, depressed, or even angry that would be considered enemies of you? Enemy of insecurity? fear? doubt? illness? sickness? challenge? difficulty? In the midst of it all God wants to commune with you. Looking back is the FOR THE, in the middle of all that is going on right now, EVEN THOUGH, even if everything is going bad around me, God is with me through it.

‘Though the fig tree does not blossom And there is no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive fails And the fields produce no food, Though the flock is cut off from the fold And there are no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will [choose to] rejoice in the Lord ; I will [choose to] shout in exultation in the [victorious] God of my salvation! The Lord God is my strength [my source of courage, my invincible army]; He has made my feet [steady and sure] like hinds’ feet And makes me walk [forward with spiritual confidence] on my high places [of challenge and responsibility]. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.’

Habakkuk 3:17-19

Even though … Habakkuk says that he will choose to rejoice, to shout in exultation for God’s salvation.

‘Even though He kills me; I will hope in Him. Nevertheless, I will argue my ways to His face. ‘

Job 13:15

Job has a maturing level of thankfulness and gratitude. LIke Paul and Silas in prison – they choose to sing at the midnight hour, the darkness part of the night and God opens the doors of the prison. We need to sing praises to our Jesus! We need to sing praises to our God! God brings a new aspect when we are generous with our praise!

Consider the words of Paul: “BECAUSE OF

‘Now I want you to know, believers, that what has happened to me [this imprisonment that was meant to stop me] has actually served to advance [the spread of] the good news [regarding salvation]. My imprisonment in [the cause of] Christ has become common knowledge throughout the whole praetorian (imperial) guard and to everyone else. Because of my chains [seeing that I am doing well and that God is accomplishing great things], most of the brothers have renewed confidence in the Lord, and have far more courage to speak the word of God [concerning salvation] without fear [of the consequences, seeing that God can work His good in all circumstances].

but the former preach Christ [insincerely] out of selfish ambition [just self-promotion], thinking that they are causing me distress in my imprisonment. What then [does it matter]? So long as in every way, whether in pretense [for self-promotion] or in all honesty [to spread the truth], Christ is being preached; and in this I rejoice. Y es, and I will rejoice [later as well], ‘

Philippians 1:12-14, 17-18

The next level of gratitude is BECAUSE OF what we are going thru. It is thanking God because of His purpose in the midst of the challenges. We might not understand the situation and we know that God in and through it all is doing something in and thru me that I am going to trust are going to be good! Paul shows how because he was in chains people were coming to Jesus. He is getting prison guards saved because of him being in prison. The message of Christ is being preach and so Paul gives God praise and thanks BECAUSE of it all. He is grateful and gracious level. We can take holder of

‘And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. ‘

Romans 8:28

God’s Word speaks to how God works all things together for good for those who love God! We know from God’s Word that he works all things together for good for those who love God and called according to His purposes. We can be grateful for each element of our lives no matter how good or bad, because He knows the bigger picture and how they are all working together, the good, the bad, and the ugly in order to come out with purpose and good. A BECAUSE OF attitude isn’t that we are thankful because of each of the bad things that happen, but because of God’s truth that we read in Romans 8:28 and can take hold

‘While Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing [along the border] between Samaria and Galilee. As He entered a village, He was met by ten lepers who stood at a distance; and they raised their voices and called out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were [miraculously] healed and made clean. One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying and praising and honoring God with a loud voice; and he lay face downward at Jesus’ feet, thanking Him [over and over]. He was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten [of you] cleansed? Where are the [other] nine? Was there no one found to return and to give thanks and praise to God, except this foreigner?” Jesus said to him, “Get up and go [on your way]. Your faith [your personal trust in Me and your confidence in God’s power] has restored you to health.” Now having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He replied, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed or with a visible display; nor will people say, ‘Look! Here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For the kingdom of God is among you [because of My presence].” ‘

Luke 17:11-19

We can look and find good in everything, no matter how bad things get. God keeps his eyes on us, just like He did like the lepers. Jesus gave them instructions to follow before He healed them. We need to follow God’s basic instructions. As they were going to show themselves to the priest, all 10 were cleansed and one saw that they were healed, they kept walking and believing while they were headed to the priest. One turned back and fell to his knees and cried out to Jesus “Thank you”. How many cry out for help but don’t turn back and cry out Thank you? They were probably all thankful of the healing in their hearts. Only one returned to express his thanks to Jesus.

Challenge today grow in our expression of gratitude rather than just our attitude of gratitude. What has God done to you and how are you going to express it?

Sing your praise to the Lord! Praise all that you have to be thankful for!

Starts in the heart but don’t let it end there, let it be an expression of gratitude! Let’s not neglect to express our gratitude to God!

The Story of Job. – Day 12


Ever been accused of wrong you didn’t commit? Ever been accused by someone who doesn’t know the full story? Ever been accused by someone who is judging without understanding? Ever been judged for something that wasn’t even true?

Ever thought you were trying to help by giving advice that was wrong? Ever thought you were trying to help by calling out someone for what is going on? Ever thought you were trying to point someone in the right direction without realizing that they weren’t going in the wrong direction?

How do you know what you should say? How do you know what you should do? How do you know how you should respond? How do you know what you should receive? Will you turn to God? Will you ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance? Will you trust in God or what man has to say? You need to realize you don’t know everything. You need to realize whether you are giving advice or getting advice that neither side may know the reality or the truth of the situation.

Do you realize that even if when you are wrong or you are speaking with the wrong heart, some of the words you speak may be true?


Today’s reading from God’s Word comes from Job 8 where we get to hear from Bildad…

‘Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said, “How long will you say these things? And will the words of your mouth be a mighty wind? Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert righteousness? If your children have sinned against Him, Then He has handed them over to the power of their transgression and punished them. If you would [diligently] seek God And implore the compassion and favor of the Almighty, Then, if you are pure and upright, Surely now He will awaken for you And restore your righteous place. Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will greatly increase. “Inquire, please, of past generations, And consider and apply yourself to the things searched out by their fathers. For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are [like] a shadow [just a breath or a vapor]. Will they (the fathers) not teach you and tell you, And utter words from their hearts [the deepest part of their nature]? “Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the rushes or reed grass grow without water? While it is still green (in flower) and not cut down, Yet it withers before any other plant [when without water]. So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the godless will perish, For his confidence is fragile and breaks, And his trust is [like] a spider’s web. He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds tightly to it, but it does not endure. He thrives and prospers [like a green plant] before the sun, And his branches spread out over his garden. His [godless] roots are wrapped around a pile of rocks, And he gazes at a house of stones. If he is snatched from his place [in the garden], Then his place will forget him, saying, ‘I have never seen you.’ Behold, this is the joy of His way; And from out of the dust others will spring up and grow [to take his place]. Behold, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He strengthen or support evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with joyful shouting [if you are found blameless]. Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tents of the wicked will be no longer.”’

We find that Bildad was getting his turn and was certain in his mind that Job was in need of repenting because he believed that Job had sinned. In addition to today’s brutal attack, we will later read two more in chapters 18 and 25.

Bildad starts by telling Job that he was full of hot air, he was speaking out like a mighty wind.

Bildad is so sure of himself that he says that if Job could be exonerated then it means God is unjust, perverting justice and righteousness and therefore Job’s children must have sinned to have received such a judgment from God.

We see in today’s reading how Bildad’s first speech focuses on God’s justice.

Bildad believed that the principle of punishment · penalty · nemesis · fate · doom · one’s just deserts · due reward · just reward · wages · justice · retributive justice · poetic justice · judgment · reckoning · revenge · reprisal · requital · retaliation · payback · vengeance · an eye for an eye (and a tooth for a tooth) · tit for tat · measure for measure · redress · reparation · restitution · recompense · repayment · damages · satisfaction · remedy · comeback · atonement · amends · one’s comeuppance · measure was at work in this very situation.

We see how part of what he was saying came to be when in Job 42:12, Job was reconciled in restored when here we see how Bildad spoke of how just God would be by restoring Job but the issue or where he missed the mark was that he thought Job had done something wrong and so needed to

“[diligently] seek God And implore the compassion and favor of the Almighty, Then, if you are pure and upright, Surely now He will awaken for you And restore your righteous place. Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will greatly increase.”

Job 8:5-7

We learn how he even tries to point the past where it was believed that where there was suffering there had to be sin, which we learn through Jesus and the rest of this story isn’t always the case. We learn that sometimes things happen in order to show God’s glory. We learn how just because it is tradition doesn’t mean it is right. We learn how just because that is how it has always been understood or always been done that it doesn’t mean it is right. Today’s devotional puts the advice from the past as follows:

The past is supposed to be a rudder to guide a person, not an anchor to hold him or her down.

Job 8 Study

Bildad was trying to use cause and effect to prove his case and even uses nature as evidence. He used these facts to accuse Job of sin and of having forgotten God.

As friends, we need to try to avoid judging or condemning and instead focus on trying to understand.

It looks like after such a savage attack that Bildad tries to put out an olive branch when he tells Job that there is still hope of restoration.

‘Behold, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He strengthen or support evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with joyful shouting [if you are found blameless]. Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tents of the wicked will be no longer.”’

Job 8:20-22

So where do you find yourself today? How will you choose to respond? I know Job used to make me cringe as the idea of what was coming my way. It wasn’t till 2013 when I caught the real meaning of Job 42:12 as it happened on my last day before my new job after having worked for 19 years and 1 day at the previous company. I hold onto God when in the midst of trials and troubles. I trust in God through the storms and waves. I know that in and through it all I can consider it pure joy for it builds my faith, helps me persevere, and in the end will help me to be complete and lacking nothing. Through God’s Word, we learn how pain can have purpose like:

The Story Of Job. – Day 11


Ever been to that tipping point where you ask, what’s the point? Ever wonder why do I need to go thru this, is there a purpose? Ever felt like it is futile and that there is nothing you can do? What do you do? Where do you turn? How do you respond? Do you just keep doing what you know how to do? Do you continue to pray and trust God in and they it all? Do you cry and call out to Him for help and strength and hope? What if it feels really bad? What if in the midst of people and friends you feel alone? What if in the midst of your struggle you feel more resistance than you feel support? Will your trust in God and His plan be greater than your pain, your worries, and your sorrows? Will you get up in the midst of it all and put on the full ar,or of God because you know where your help comes from and you are building your life on the solid foundation, the rock of your faith in and through Jesus Christ our Lord? Will you press on in the midst taking hold of the overcoming power of Jesus? Will you press in because God’s Word says to consider it pure joy when you face challenges, trials, and troubles of many kinds? Will you allow your faith to grow by persevering they it all because the joy of the Lord is your strength? Will you persevere so that in the end you will be perfect and complete, lacking nothing thanks to Jesus who paid it all? So how will you get your day started today?

““Is not man forced to labor on earth? And are not his days like the days of a hired man? As a slave earnestly longs for the shade, And as a hired man eagerly awaits his wages, So am I allotted months of futility and suffering, And [long] nights of trouble and misery are appointed to me. When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise [and the night be gone]?’ But the night continues, And I am continually tossing until the dawning of day. My body is clothed with worms and a crust of dust; My skin is hardened [and broken and loathsome], and [breaks out and] runs. My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, And are spent without hope. “Remember that my life is but breath [a puff of wind, a sigh]; My eye will not see good again. The eye of him who sees me [now] will see me no more; Your eyes will be upon me, but I will not be. As a cloud vanishes and is gone, So he who goes down to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) does not come up. He will not return again to his house, Nor will his place know about him anymore.

“Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul [O Lord]. Am I the sea, or the sea monster, That You set a guard over me? When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me, My couch will ease my complaint,’ Then You frighten me with dreams And terrify me through visions, So that I would choose suffocation, Death rather than my pain. I waste away and loathe my life; I will not live forever. Let me alone, for my days are but a breath [futile and without substance]. What is man that You [should] magnify him [and think him important]? And that You are concerned about him? And that You examine him every morning And try and test him every moment? Will You never turn Your gaze away from me [it plagues me], Nor let me alone until I swallow my spittle? If I have sinned, what [harm] have I done to You, O Watcher of mankind? Why have You set me as a target for You, So that I am a burden to myself? Why then do You not pardon my transgression And take away my sin and guilt? For now I will lie down in the dust; And You will seek me [diligently], but I will not be.””

We see how after refuting Elisha’s in yesterday’s reading, today Job directs his words to God. We learned how in the midst of the trial and test, Job has started to feel like this has all been just a job, like he was just a laborer or someone on military duty where it had become repetitive and joyless situation in which not his is able to comfort him nor bring him any assurance.

We see how he compares it to a hired man, a slave with a tough master, someone who was just looking for a silver lining be it relief or even reward. We learn how he is suffering thru sleepless nights of trouble and misery. We learn how his life had been hateful · detestable · abhorrent · repulsive · odious · repugnant · repellent · disgusting · revolting · sickening · nauseating · abominable · despicable · contemptible · reprehensible · execrable · damnable · hideous · ghastly · vile · horrible · nasty · frightful · obnoxious · gross · foul · offensive · disagreeable · horrid· yucky · bogging · noisomehateful · detestable · abhorrent · repulsive · odious · repugnant · repellent · disgusting · revolting · sickening · nauseating · abominable · despicable · contemptible · reprehensible · execrable · damnable · hideous · ghastly · vile · horrible · nasty · frightful · obnoxious · gross · foul · offensive · disagreeable · horrid· yucky · bogging · noisome because of

We learn how hopeless life felt because he was being tossed around like the waves of the see, hopeless because he knows how short life truly is, hopeless because he thought the time of seeing any good in life was fading away.

Today’s reading shows how Job was trying to reconcile in his own mind what could be going on and what God was doing.

We learn in the second half how Job turn to mourn · grieve (for/over) · weep for · shed tears for · sorrow · wail · moan · groan · weep · cry · sob · keen · plain · howl · pine for · beat one’s breast · ululate God. We see how Job start to question his drawn out and prolonged suffering. His words parallel the text from James 4 that say:

“Yet you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen in your life tomorrow. [What is secure in your life?] You are merely a vapor [like a puff of smoke or a wisp of steam from a cooking pot] that is visible for a little while and then vanishes [into thin air].”

James 4:14 AMP

We learn how the pain is so severe and the reality of death that he has to express it. We see how he questions why he is needing to be monitored and watched over so much, was it because he is raging and tumultuous like the sea. We learn how even when people would find rest in going to bed how he still suffers and is faced with nightmares.

We learn how he keeps question the why. What is the point? What is the purpose? Why?

The Story of Job. – Day 10


How do you take accusations in the midst of your trials and challenges? How do you handle criticism that is off base and untrue? How do you handle your friends or people you thought were your friends when they start saying things about you that you know are untrue and hurtful?


Today’s reading we get to see Job’s response to Eliphaz’s words:

‘Then Job answered and said, “Oh, that my grief could actually be weighed And placed in the balances together with my tragedy [to see if my grief is the grief of a coward]! For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; Therefore my words have been incoherent, Because the arrows of the Almighty are within me, My spirit drinks their poison; The terrors of God are arrayed against me. Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder? Can something that has no taste to it be eaten without salt? Or is there any flavor in the white of an egg? My soul refuses to touch them; Such things are like loathsome food to me [sickening and repugnant]. “Oh that my request would come to pass, And that God would grant me the thing that I long for! I wish that it would please God to crush me, That He would let loose His hand and cut me off. Then I would still have consolation, And I would jump for joy amid unsparing pain, That I have not denied or hidden the words of the Holy One. What strength do I have left, that I should wait [and hope]? And what is ahead of me, that I should be patient and endure? Is my strength and endurance that of stones, Or is my flesh made of bronze? Is it that I have no help within myself, And that success and wisdom have been driven from me? “For the despairing man there should be kindness from his friend; So that he does not abandon (turn away from) the fear of the Almighty. How painful are words of honesty. But what does your argument prove? Do you intend to reprove my words [with a convincing argument], When the words of one in despair belong to the wind [and go ignored]? You would cast lots (gamble) over the fatherless And bargain away your friend. Now please look at me, And see if I lie to your face [for you know that I would not]. Turn away [from your suspicion], let there be no injustice; Turn away, my righteousness and vindication is still in it. Is there injustice or malice on my tongue? Can my palate not discern what is destructive?’

In using the amplified version of the text, we can get a lot of the additional context from the text and so was why I chose the Amplified version for this study.

We read in the start of Job’s words about his grief. We learn looking into that word that it was from the word (כעשׂ ka‛aś) – we also learn that it can be interpreted in two ways: “vexation, trouble, grief; Ecclesiastes 1:18; Ecclesiastes 2:23; or it may mean anger; Deuteronomy 32:19; Ezekiel 20:28.”

It speaks to the level and gravity of what he was going thru and how much he wanted his friends to understand the extent of his sorrow and his suffering before passing judgement on him and trying to condemn him.

We read how he was trying to get a measure by putting them into a scale in order to measure the weight of his sorrows, griefs, and woes. We read how he compares them to the weight of the sand of the sea. We see that the impact of all this pain is making it hard for him to fully express himself.

Job shares how the pain he is suffering is so much greater than anything man could cause. We learn in the studies how the pain was more to his heart, because it had to have been allowed by God, and yet he had loved God so much – with all that he had – and still was having to suffer so severely.

We learn how Job is comparing his plea with the animals as they don’t bray or low for nothing and neither is his complaint without cause. In today’s study we find the reminder that even though we may have cause to complain unlike beasts, wild or domesticated, we as rational beings should display a better spirit.

With Job’s depiction, we learn how he feels that his life has lost its pleasantness as food without salt. He lost his children, taking away his joy. Job speaks to his life to compare to how nauseating he is feeling as well as to answer Eliphaz.

We learn how Job is just wanting God to finish this process that is going on. We learn how his preference was that God would stop the suffering and the misery with death so it would be over with as we learned in chapter 3. Even though Eliphaz spoke to God granting long life, we learn how Job wasn’t wanting that right now without his health and his children to share it with.

Job had taken hold of God’s revelation and his commands and hence pursued them and followed them in his life. He shared what he believed. He realizes the holiness of God. He knows there is a reason for everything that happens. He knew there was purpose behind it, even when it didn’t feel good.

We learn in the studies how “had no strength to bear up against these accumulated trials; that he was afraid that he should be left to sink under them, and to complain of God; and that his friends were not to wonder if his strength gave way, and he uttered the language of complaint.“.

We see how Job was feeling that there was no hope in him to get out of this, he had no more strength to try. We see how any hope of deliverance had left him.

His friends weren’t helping him. He compares their help to a dry riverbed in the hot of the summer.

We don’t find Job admitting to having sinned but instead he asks his friends to teach him, help him understand where he erred, to show him where they think he had sinned for he didn’t know of anything that would have caused his current situation.

The Story of Job. – Day 9


Ever had someone try to blame the temptations in their lives on God? Ever had someone try to blame you for calamities, troubles, or trials that occur in your life as though it was some punishment from God? Ever compared their accusations against the plans and promises of God? How can you judge the feedback you are receiving to know if it is true or it is not? How can you discern the truth in the midst of accusations? How can you discern if there is something that you need to fix or work on? Will you turn to God for wisdom and direction? Will you ask the Holy Spirit to be your comforter and your guide? Will you invite Jesus into your heart in order to help ensure everything gets cleaned up and cleaned out?


Today’s reading from the book of Job comes from Job 5:

‘“Call now—is there anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones (angels) will you turn? For anger slays the foolish man, And jealousy kills the simple (naive). I have seen the foolish taking root [and outwardly prospering], But I cursed his dwelling immediately [for his destruction was certain]. His children are far from safety [and included in their father’s ruin], They are oppressed and crushed in the [court of justice in the city’s] gate, And there is no one to rescue them . The hungry devour his harvest And take it even [when it grows] among the thorns; The trap opens for [his] wealth. For affliction does not come forth from the dust, Nor does trouble spring forth from the ground. For man is born for trouble, [As naturally] as sparks fly upward. “As for me, I would seek God and inquire of Him, And I would commit my cause to God; Who does great and unsearchable things, Marvelous things without number. He gives rain upon the earth And sends waters upon the fields, So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And He lifts to safety those who mourn. He frustrates the devices and schemes of the crafty, So that their hands cannot attain success or achieve anything of [lasting] worth. He catches the [so-called] wise in their own shrewdness, And the advice of the devious is quickly thwarted. In the daytime they meet in darkness, And at noon they grope as in the night. But God saves [the innocent] from the sword of the mouth of the devious, And the poor from the hand of the mighty. So the helpless have hope, And injustice shuts its mouth. “Behold, how happy and fortunate is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise or reject the discipline of the Almighty [subjecting you to trial and suffering]. For He inflicts pain, but He binds up and gives relief; He wounds, but His hands also heal. He will rescue you from six troubles; Even in seven, evil will not touch you. In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword. You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes. You will laugh at violence and famine, And you will not be afraid of the wild beasts of the earth. For you will be in harmony with the stones of the field, And the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. You will know also that your tent is secure and at peace, And you will visit your dwelling and fear no loss [nor find anything amiss]. You will know also that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. You will come to your grave in old age, Like the stacking of grain [on the threshing floor] in its season. Behold this; we have investigated it, and it is true. Hear and heed it, and know for yourself [for your own good].”’

Today’s study of God’s Word comes to us with help from the following references:


As today’s reading starts we see Job being called out by Eliphaz to enter into an argument or litigation against God. Job is challenged to see if God will even answer such a cry from him and step down from heaven to give an account for His handling or dealings with Job. We learn how Eliphaz was trying to allow the information to be put out there in order to show Job that he was wrong and that nobody would be able to be found to take up Job’s case. Eliphaz tries to use all that happened to Job as proof that he was a great sinner. Eliphaz tries through this to point to Job being weak minded and wouldn’t be able to refute his accusations. Eliphaz tries to relate how the wicked may prosper for a time but eventually they will lose out to what has happened to Job. We read how the accusation was how Job couldn’t benefit from his labor and it was because of his problems. Eliphaz keeps trying to point Job to God and look to Him for answers.

Eliphaz was convinced that ‘trouble” always starts somewhere; it does not just “happen” such as (“trouble spring out of the ground”). By saying that he had seen sinners prosper (“taking root”), only to lose everything in the end, Eliphaz wrongly suggested that Job’s sin led to the death of his children.

Speaking in spiritual platitudes, Job’s friend presumed to know the cause of Job’s suffering. Eliphaz also told him if he would just submit (“despise not”), to the (“chastening of the Almighty”), Job would reap a harvest of blessing. But no one can make such a prediction. Eliphaz modeled how not to address another person’s affliction.

The Story of Job. – Day 8


Ever had people tell you that they received a word from God for you? Ever checked it against God’s Word to confirm the truth of it? Ever found it to be true? Ever found it to be false? Ever not checked and just assumed it was true or false without verifying? Ever not checked and later found out they were wrong? Turn to God for wisdom so that you won’t be mislead or tricked by the plans and ploys of the devil.

When we receive the Holy Spirit after accepting Jesus into our hearts and lives, He can speak and confirm or rebuke what is being said. We need to turn to God for wisdom. We can’t just try to go through life man’s way but instead we need to seek first the kingdom of God and go it His way. We need to choose the narrow road that leads to life rather than going mans way on the broad road that leads to death.


Today’s reading will continue in Job 4 where we learn about Eliphaz’s vision that he believed was from God:

‘“Now a word was secretly brought to me, And my ear received a whisper of it. Amid disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falls on men, Dread and trembling came upon me, Which made all my bones shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair on my skin stood on end! The spirit stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; A form was before my eyes; There was silence, and then I heard a voice, saying: ‘Can [mortal] man be just before God or be more righteous than He? Can a man be pure before his Maker or be more cleansed than He? God puts no trust or confidence, even in His [heavenly] servants, And He charges His angels with error. How much more [will He blame and charge] those who dwell in houses (bodies) of clay, Whose foundations are in the dust, Who are crushed like a moth. Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces and destroyed; Unobserved and unnoticed, they perish forever. Is not their tent-cord drawn up within them [so that the tent collapses]? Do they not die, and yet without [acquiring] wisdom?’’

Notes from the study:

Eliphaz speaks of how this message was stolen for him so that he would know this secret. We learn how he received this little bit of information. We learn how it was in a night vision in the past on a similar subject where he learned about how man can’t be greater than God. Not even angels can compare to God. Eliphaz was going to use this to counter he believed to be Job’s unfounded self-confidence. Through his vision he will look to apply his learning towards Job’s case. In our studies we see how what was being spoken was aligned with the truth of God’s Word, however, Eliphaz tweaked it for his purposes to prove that Job was insincere and hypocritical.

We learn how the thoughts called out in verse 13 comes from the Hebrew word that means divided and distracted mind (שׂעפים śâ‛ı̂phı̂ym). We also learn how when they speak of deep sleep (תרדמה tardêmâh) that it inferred to the type of sleep that was normally brought about by divine agencies to bring the person into a profound repose or slumber similar to Adam when God removed his rib. We learn how the vision alarmed Eliphaz as a spirit came before him creating even more fear. We learn how this spirit first passed by him and then stood still looking at him. We learn how there was a dramatic cause, that silence that causes uneasiness, and then the spirit spoke. We learn how it speaks of man but looking more into this we learn that “it is derived from אנשׁ ‘ânash, to be sick, or ill at ease; and then desperate, or incurable – as of a disease or wound; Jeremiah 15:18; Micah 1:9; Job 34:6.” We learn that is uses another word for man too which speaks to strength (גבר geber). The combination points to whether man is strong or week, man can’t be as pure as God. We learn how God’s servants the angels didn’t compare to God’s holiness and so there were things that they couldn’t even do or foresee. We learn how in comparison to God’s wisdom nobody and nothing can compare, not even angels. We know how some of the angels had even fallen when they followed Satan. So not man and not angels are able to compare with God. We learn how the vision spoke to how if the angels aren’t good enough how could man be blamed or accused. Man is but clay – was formed from dust by God and given life through His breath. We learn of how short our lives are. We learn how we come and then go. We learn about how once our time on earth is over, we are gone from this place and nobody will ever see us here again. No matter how good we are, life is but a breath and so we will one day all die and have to meet our maker. Before we can become truly wise, our life is over. That was the end of the vision Eliphaz had received and concludes Job 4.

So how will you make your life count in the little time you have available? How will you keep your hope and your faith and your trust in God through the highs and the lows? Will you choose Jesus to be your Lord and Savior since we can’t create salvation on our own? God knew that and that is why He sent His one and only Son, so that whosoever would believe on Him would not perish but have everlasting life.
