Ever heard about having the hair on the back of your neck going up? Ever had the hair on your arm go up? Ever heard a saying like “it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up” “it made my hair stand on end”? Ever wondered where it came from or originated from? Ever noticed that it tends to be related to someone getting scared?
Today’s reading comes to us from Job 4…
Eliphaz Speaks: The Innocent Prosper
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
2 “If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
Yet who can keep from speaking?
3 Behold, you have instructed many,
and you have strengthened the weak hands.
4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
and you have made firm the feeble knees.
5 But now it has come to you, and you are impatient;
it touches you, and you are dismayed.
6 Is not your fear of God your confidence,
and the integrity of your ways your hope?
7 “Remember: who that was innocent ever perished?
Or where were the upright cut off?
8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity
and sow trouble reap the same.
9 By the breath of God they perish,
and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.
10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion,
the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey,
and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 “Now a word was brought to me stealthily;
my ear received the whisper of it.
13 Amid thoughts from visions of the night,
when deep sleep falls on men,
14 dread came upon me, and trembling,
which made all my bones shake.
15 A spirit glided past my face;
the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 It stood still,
but I could not discern its appearance.
A form was before my eyes;
there was silence, then I heard a voice:
17 ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God?
Can a man be pure before his Maker?
18 Even in his servants he puts no trust,
and his angels he charges with error;
19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay,
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed like the moth.
20 Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces;
they perish forever without anyone regarding it.
21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them,
do they not die, and that without wisdom?’
–from Job 4
Have you ever realized that fear is a liar? Have you ever realized what the impact of fear can on your life? What will you believe? Who will you believe? What can you trust?
Let’s take a moment to ponder all of this while listening to a song…
We need to receive the gift of Jesus and then you will never be alone. He will never leave you and never abandon you. Don’t be robbed by fear but allow the joy of the Lord to be your strength. Allow the love of God to fill you to overflowing – expelling fear and doubt so that you are overflowing into the lives of others love and hope and joy.
Today’s devotional from The Global Impact Bible on the theme of the Bible’s impact on literature brings us the topic of Lord Byron, “A Spirit passed before me”. We learn in our devotional for today that this was inspired from today’s reading where in Job 4:15 it says:
‘ A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.’
–from Job 4:15
Today’s devotional then shares the poem with us…
A spirit passed before me: I beheld
The face of immortality unveiled –
Deep sleep came down on every eye save mine –
And there it stood, -all formless -but divine:
Along my bones the creeping flesh did quake;
And as my damp hair stiffened, thus it spake:
“Is man more just than God? Is man more pure
Than He who deems even Seraphs insecure?
Creatures of clay -vain dwellers in the dust!
The moth survives you, and are ye more just?
Things of a day! you wither ere the night,
Heedless and blind to Wisdom’s wasted light!”
So where will you put your hope and trust? Will you choose to put it in something that will last forever? Will you invest into eternity? Will you pour out into the lives of others since their spirit is the one thing that will last? Will you pour into the lives of others that they will come to know the hope that is within you thanks to your relationship with Jesus? Will you invest in what is most important to God? Will you invest in others?
For those who prayed this for the first time or as a recommitment to God, I celebrate with the angels in heaven that you made the greatest decision of your life. Will you leave a comment so that I know and pray for you? Will you leave a comment or question so we can have a conversation? Look for a local church that is a Bible believing, Bible preaching church that will be able to come alongside you and help you in this journey called life.
I thank You Lord for this new day and for everything that will be in it. Help me Lord to walk in the boldness and confidence of a relationship with Jesus. Help me Lord to be making people my priority. Help me Lord to be one who goes beyond the stuff and the distractions and pours into the lives of the people You have chosen to bring into my life. Help me to be a good husband. Help me to be a good father. Help me to be a good son. Help me to be a good brother. Help me to be a good friend. Help me Lord to let my light shine so that others will see it and You will be glorified in Heaven. Help me Lord to make eternity my priority. Help me Lord to make what will last my priority. Lord, Your Word tells me that these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. So help me Lord to make these my priorities so that my life will exude them to the world around me so that in and through it all You will receive the praise, the honor, and the glory in Jesus’s name. Amen.
