MEDIEVAL MAPS OF THE WORLD… (The Bible’s Impact on Scientific Discovery [July 18])

Do you know where you are? How are you viewing it? Are you in the center? Are you the focus? Are you putting God in the center? Are you sticking around Him? Does everything revolved around you? Do you revolve around the Son like the Earth revolves around the Sun? What is your centricity? Who? What? do you put in the center?

Today’s reading comes from Ezekiel 5

Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed

1″And you, O son of man, take a sharp sword. Use it as a barber’s razor and pass it over your head and your beard. Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair. 2A third part you shall burn in the fire in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are completed. And a third part you shall take and strike with the sword all around the city. And a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will unsheathe the sword after them. 3And you shall take from these a small number and bind them in the skirts of your robe. 4And of these again you shall take some and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire. From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.
5″Thus says the Lord God: This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes. 7Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are more turbulent than the nations that are all around you, and have not walked in my statutes or obeyed my rules, and have not even acted according to the rules of the nations that are all around you, 8therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, even I, am against you. And I will execute judgments in your midst in the sight of the nations. 9And because of all your abominations I will do with you what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10Therefore fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers. And I will execute judgments on you, and any of you who survive I will scatter to all the winds. 11Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will withdraw. My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.
13″Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—when I spend my fury upon them. 14Moreover, I will make you a desolation and an object of reproach among the nations all around you and in the sight of all who pass by. 15You shall be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and a horror, to the nations all around you, when I execute judgments on you in anger and fury, and with furious rebukes—I am the Lord; I have spoken— 16when I send against you the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon you and break your supply of bread. 17I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the Lord; I have spoken.”

–from Ezekiel 5

Will you not put God as your center? Will you not choose to pursue and live out your life around God’s purpose, plans, and direction? Would you rather spend eternity with God than to be left to your own will, ability, and plans — wandering like the lost? wandering like sheep without a shepherd. Won’t you choose to go it God’s way? Won’t you choose the narrow path that leads to life?

Today’s devotional from The Global Impact Bible on the theme of the Bible’s impact on scientific discovery brings us the topic of Medieval maps of the world. In today’s devotional, we learn about many of the medieval maps show Jerusalem in the center, at the center. The example we see today is the famous map from 1580 by Heinrich Bünting which positions at the intersection of Africa, Asia, and Europe. We learn how it is believed that this view of the world comes from today’s reading with verse 5 that says…

‘”Thus says the Lord God : This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. ‘ — Ezekiel 5:5

Today’s devotional closed sharing how St. Jerome, who worked to produce the Vulgate translation, understood the biblical text to mean that Jerusalem was the terrae umbilicus or “navel of the earth”.

So how about you? What have you decided to be the center of your world? What is it that is your focus? What is it that is producing the gravity to keep you there? What is it that is generating the gravitational force to keep you near it? Is it something real? Is it something that is good? Is it something that will last? Is it Jesus?

Let’s pray…

Prayer of Salvation Example

For those who prayed this for the first time or as a recommitment to God, I celebrate with the angels in heaven that you made the greatest decision of your life. Will you leave a comment so that I know and pray for you? Will you leave a comment or question so we can have a conversation? Look for a local church that is a Bible believing, Bible preaching church that will be able to come alongside you and help you in this journey called life.

Heavenly Father,
I thank You and I praise You Lord. I praise that You helped me to realize that it isn’t about rituals or routines. I thank You that You opened my eyes to see it is about relationship and that Jesus made a way where there wasn’t a way for me and for all of us to start a relationship with You. I thank You Lord that Your Word never returns void. I thank You Lord that Your Word is like a sword that will allow us to fight back against the lies and deception of this dark world. I thank You Lord that Your Word never fails. I thank You Lord that Your Word is faithful and is a love letter to the world from the Father. Help me Lord to keep You in the center for a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken. Help me to keep You in the center of my life. Help me to keep You in the center of my marriage. Help me to keep You in the center of my family. Help me to keep you in the middle of all the relationships in my life. Lord, I ask all this so that in and through my life You will receive the praise, the honor, and the glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
