The Bible has even impacted the naming of cities… (The Bible’s Impact on History and Philosophy [Feb 3])

Today’s reading came from Joshua 12. Reading in verse 22 we find

the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;

which our devotional uses to point out how the Bible impacts even geography in how biblical city names inspired people to name their cities after them. Some may come to mind, but consider how Carmel-by-the-Sea in California came from it. Another example comes from Joshua 19:46…

and Me-jarkon and Rakkon with the territory over against Joppa.

which inspired someone to name a city Joppatown in Maryland and another Joppa in Alabama.

Another example comes from Joshua 24:30…

And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.

which inspired someone to name a city Ephraim in Utah and another Mount Ephraim in New Jersey.

Reading thru the Bible with the pivot on how did the Word impact the world around us is pretty incredible. It’s a true blessing to have received it for Christmas from my wife’s parents. Today is an interesting day to event considered this as we had unfortunately lost her dad just before Christmas and today will be doing a celebration of life memorial service for him. I have been blessed and honored with the opportunity to m.c. the service. God’s Word never returns void. God’s Word is a lamp unto my feet and a lamp unto my path.

Heavenly Father,

I lift up today to You. I pray that all I say and do will be for Your praise, Your Honor, and Your glory. Help me today to shine the light of Jesus and of the hope that is within me to all those who come and are a part of today’s service and who come to spend time with the family. May their be a message of hope and a message of purpose and a message of plan that speak life and hope and comfort and peace over all those present. Lord grant me wisdom and grant me strength to make it through today in Jesus’ name so that in and through it all, You receive the praise, the honor and the glory. Amen.
