Ever heard the saying that pride comes before the fall?

Where are you putting your confidence? Are you too confident that you won’t ask God? Consider all the stories of the Bible where the leaders continually asked God what they should do even though it looked just like every other time and how God gave them different directions! Consider all the stories of the Bible where leaders chose to go about it their way and how things turned out! (poorly) Consider Saul losing the kingship. Consider the Israelites who were tricked in the promised land by people who didn’t want to be destroyed. We can’t let pride get in the way of needing God’s direction every day of the rest of our lives! Remember how we are to pray without ceasing? The is nothing too big and nothing too small for God not to care about how it will work in and through our lives, so give it all up to Him! With God all things are possible, so don’t leave Him out of your life!

If you trip up remember you can turn back to God and you should for He is gracious! Put your trust in Him when things are going well and when things are falling apart. Rather than trying to do it all on your own, put your trust in God and allow Him to lead you and guide you all the days of your life!

Leave the pains of the past where they belong, behind you, and at the same time remember the lessons they taught you so you won’t need to learn them again! How many times would you want to go thru that pain or suffering again? What was the lesson? Are you assuming you know or are you asking God for wisdom and discernment in that moment? Don’t be too proud to ask for help! Ask for help from God! Ask for help from others!

Consider the meanings of pride…on one side it has a positive meaning and the other negative…we want to avoid the negative parts. Example of the good meaning is taking pride in your work and hence working hard and doing your diligence. Example of the bad meaning is having an excessively high opinion of yourself and your value, being arrogant and overbearing in how you live your life!

The issue is when you try to put yourself above God rather than living humbly before God! The issue is when we thing we don’t need God! Be careful when the devil is tempting you with pride or to be prideful! Turn to God and away from the ways of the devil!

The Dangers of Pride

Day 188: Bible In One Year 2017

Devotional, Proverbs 16:18-27, Acts of the Apostles 25:23-27, Acts of the Apostles 26:1-23, 2 Kings 14:23-29, 2 Kings 15

  1. Cultivate humility
    • ‘Lowliness of spirit’, the opposite of pride, brings:

Humility means a willingness to learn: ‘Those who give heed to instruction prosper’ (v.20a).

The humble trust in God: ‘Whoever leans on, trusts in, and is confident in the Lord – happy, blessed, and fortunate is he’ (v.20b, AMP).

As opposed to the arrogant words of the proud (‘scoundrels plot evil, and their speech is like a scorching fire’, v.27), the humble use pleasant words (‘pleasant words promote instruction’, v.21b). ‘Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones’ (v.24).

  2. Serve and witness
  3. Resist pride
