How would you respond?

The one you knew was coming shows up. The one you were waiting for with expectation. The one who was about to change the world forever. The one who all the past pointed to. The one who experienced the sign that you were told was going to happen.

How would you respond?

We see into today’s reading how John responded…

The Lamb of God

29The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.’ 31I did not know who he would be, but I came baptizing with water in order to make him known to the people of Israel.”

32And John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and stay on him. 33I still did not know that he was the one, but God, who sent me to baptize with water, had said to me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and stay on a man; he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen it,” said John, “and I tell you that he is the Son of God.”

–from John 1

You know Jesus is coming back! You know when He does, this time it will be for the final battle. You know when He gets back, things are going to change. So today let’s share the Good News of Jesus with others. Today’s let’s help to grow the kingdom of God so that when Jesus comes back they will be coming to heaven too. Today we need to be preparing for His return! Today since we know He is coming back, we need to be ready, get ready, and help others to know and get prepared too. We need them to get to hear about Jesus so that they can make the decision to put their hope and their trust in Him! We need to do it before it is too late! If He came back today, would all your friends and family be with you in Heaven? Would your co-workers and neighbors be with you in Heaven? Is there anything you could have, should have, would have done had you known the day and the time were so imminent? If you are reading this, it’s not too late! What are you going to do with your today?

Let’s put our words into action! Let’s put our focus on the prize! Let’s do what God is calling us to do by living it out! Let’s be more than just hearers of the Word, but rather let’s be doers! Today’s reading continues in this way…

Hearing and Doing

19Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. 20Human anger does not achieve God’s righteous purpose. 21So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you. 22Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice. 23If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. 24They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like. 25But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do. 26Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourself. 27What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.

–from James 1

We need to put first things first! We need to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness! If we try to be fulfilled by the things of the world we will find ourselves empty. What are you doing to be filled up? What are you doing to be prepared? What are you doing to get motivated and ready for today? Start with God! Start with His Word! Start with time praying! And make today worthwhile! When we put the wrong things, the temporal things, first, we end up seeing what is draining and disappointing. You don’t want to find out it was useless! You don’t want to find out that you have just been chasing the wind!

Today’s reading continues with this information…

17So life came to mean nothing to me, because everything in it had brought me nothing but trouble. It had all been useless; I had been chasing the wind. 18Nothing that I had worked for and earned meant a thing to me, because I knew that I would have to leave it to my successor, 19and he might be wise, or he might be foolish—who knows? Yet he will own everything I have worked for, everything my wisdom has earned for me in this world. It is all useless. 20So I came to regret that I had worked so hard. 21You work for something with all your wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and then you have to leave it all to someone who hasn’t had to work for it. It is useless, and it isn’t right! 22You work and worry your way through life, and what do you have to show for it? 23As long as you live, everything you do brings nothing but worry and heartache. Even at night your mind can’t rest. It is all useless. 24The best thing we can do is eat and drink and enjoy what we have earned. And yet, I realized that even this comes from God. 25How else could you have anything to eat or enjoy yourself at all? 26God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness to those who please him, but he makes sinners work, earning and saving, so that what they get can be given to those who please him. It is all useless. It is like chasing the wind.
