Are you lifting it up? Are you putting it out in the open? Are you hiding it under a cover? Are you keeping it out of sight? Don’t leave it covered up, let your light shine! Will you let your light of love shine into every place you go? Will you let your light shine so that it is visible from a distance as well as up close? Will you shine it bright and clear? Will you let it shine no matter how dark the situation seems to be or to get? Will you allow every day to build on the previous so that people can see God’s love and power working in and through you? Shine! Shine! Shine! The devil may try to quench your light, but let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
Today’s reading starts by reminding us what we are to do with our light!
16“No one lights a lamp and covers it with a bowl or puts it under a bed. Instead, it is put on the lampstand, so that people will see the light as they come in. 17“Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be found and brought to light. 18“Be careful, then, how you listen; because those who have something will be given more, but whoever has nothing will have taken away from them even the little they think they have.” — from Luke 8
Are you willing to be obedient to God’s Word? Will you receive Jesus and join the family of God?
19Jesus’ mother and brothers came to him, but were unable to join him because of the crowd. 20Someone said to Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.” 21Jesus said to them all, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” –from Luke 8
Don’t fret! don’t stress! Jesus will never leave you nor abandon you! Don’t fear the storms or the waves, put all of your trust in Him!
22One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they started out. 23As they were sailing, Jesus fell asleep. Suddenly a strong wind blew down on the lake, and the boat began to fill with water, so that they were all in great danger. 24The disciples went to Jesus and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master! We are about to die!”Jesus got up and gave an order to the wind and to the stormy water; they quieted down, and there was a great calm. 25Then he said to the disciples, “Where is your faith?”But they were amazed and afraid, and said to one another, “Who is this man? He gives orders to the winds and waves, and they obey him!” –from Luke 8
Let’s shine a light of love, not out of superiority, but out of servitude to Jesus. Let’s live lives that point others to Jesus, that is the point of signs and wonders after all. Signs that point to the reality of Jesus!
16So let no one make rules about what you eat or drink or about holy days or the New Moon Festival or the Sabbath. 17All such things are only a shadow of things in the future; the reality is Christ. 18Do not allow yourselves to be condemned by anyone who claims to be superior because of special visions and who insists on false humility and the worship of angels. For no reason at all, such people are all puffed up by their human way of thinking 19and have stopped holding on to Christ, who is the head of the body. Under Christ’s control the whole body is nourished and held together by its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God wants it to grow.
–from Colossians 2
We are born again because we received Jesus. The old is gone and the new has come! Let’s take a hold of the new and stop allowing the old to have power over us. Allow the past to remind us of how GREAT and POWERFUL God’s love is for us! That while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us! That God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that whosoever would believe in Him wouldn’t perish, but would have eternal life!
20You have died with Christ and are set free from the ruling spirits of the universe. Why, then, do you live as though you belonged to this world? Why do you obey such rules as 21“Don’t handle this,” “Don’t taste that,” “Don’t touch the other”? 22All these refer to things which become useless once they are used; they are only human rules and teachings. 23Of course such rules appear to be based on wisdom in their forced worship of angels, and false humility, and severe treatment of the body; but they have no real value in controlling physical passions. –from Colossians 2
Do you realize the benefits of following after Jesus and being obedient to His direction? Do you realize that God has provided us with the Holy Spirit so that when we are at a crossroad or need wisdom, we can ask and He will tell us?
1Happy are those who obey the Lord, who live by his commands. 2Your work will provide for your needs; you will be happy and prosperous. 3Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in your home, and your children will be like young olive trees around your table. 4A man who obeys the Lord will surely be blessed like this. 5May the Lord bless you from Zion! May you see Jerusalem prosper all the days of your life! 6May you live to see your grandchildren! Peace be with Israel! –from Psalm 128
